Abstract

Classical Javanese literature is traditionally defined by its profound synonymy with religious authority and the royal court (power), a duality long observed but structurally underexplained. This research utilizes a qualitative descriptive method, synthesizing existing studies of canonical texts—including Negarakertagama, Pararaton, Arjuna Wiwaha, and Sutasoma—to reveal the tripartite sociological formula determining literary inception. The analysis establishes that classical literature was overwhelmingly produced by eloquent individuals monopolizing broad knowledge, typically religious leaders, kings, and royal scribes. This structural control resulted from three interlocking factors: 1) Caste, wherein literacy and intellectual production were restricted primarily to Brahmins and Kshatriyas; 2) Knowledge, disseminated through the elite Kadewaguruan education system, which prioritized religious ethics before statecraft, functioning as an ideological apparatus to generate loyal state officials and authorized literary works; and 3) Culture, which utilized mythical elements (Smita) to glorify kings as divine incarnations, thereby legitimizing political narratives. The overarching function of this literature was to perpetuate power and spread sanctioned religious doctrine. While groups outside the palace provided resistance, notably through accessible oral literature and written counter-narratives like Serat Gatoloco, this opposition often failed to fundamentally displace the dominant hegemony. Drawing on Gayatri Spivak’s postcolonial perspective, the findings demonstrate that while resistance existed, the systemic control over authorship, knowledge, and dissemination ensured the literary output remained fundamentally focused on centralized religious and political control. This research clarifies that the enduring characteristics of Javanese classical texts are directly rooted in the political and educational policies of the past.

Abstract

The Indonesian Constitutional Court Decision No. 97/PUU-XIV/2016 has created a legal space for penghayat kepercayaan (adherents of indigenous beliefs) to register their identities in official population documents. However, the implementation of this recognition continues to face significant bureaucratic and social barriers. This study explores the struggle for legal recognition of customary marriages among the Anak Rawa indigenous community in Siak Regency, Riau. Employing a qualitative approach, the research draws on in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. Findings reveal that despite normative legal recognition, implementation remains limited and fragmented at the local level. Many community members feel compelled to convert to state-recognized religions to gain access to civil rights, such as marriage certificates and birth registration for their children. Structural pressures, social stigma, and a legal-administrative system biased toward official religions undermine the ability of indigenous faith communities to preserve their identity. Key challenges include limited information dissemination, a lack of technical guidance for local civil registration officers, and weak institutional coordination. The study emphasizes the importance of a multi-sectoral approach that involves government institutions, civil society, and academia in promoting inclusive and sustainable legal recognition. Effective advocacy strategies include disseminating regulations, empowering communities, and engaging in interfaith dialogue to reduce social resistance. Ultimately, the legal recognition of customary marriage is not merely an issue of administrative formality, but a broader struggle for the cultural and civil rights of indigenous belief communities in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examined the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and the likes (LGBTQ+) identity in @pelanginusantara_org Instagram accounts in the midst of heteronormative dominance and marginalization of queer narratives by mainstream media in Indonesia. This study uses Muted Group Theory as the main theoretical framework to understand how queer communities construct counter-discourses against the symbolic structures that exclude them. The analysis was carried out through the multimodal analysis approach proposed by Kress & van Leeuwen, which was strengthened with the perspective of Butler’s gender performativity theory, in order to interpret visual, linguistic, and symbolic strategies in building queer identity in the digital space. The results show that this account uses strategies of visual affirmation, cultural localization, and affective narratives to challenge heteronormative discourses and create a more inclusive counter-public space. These findings confirm that social media, especially Instagram, has transformational potential for the LGBTQ+ community in Indonesia in negotiating identity and building a more equitable and humane alternative representation.

Abstract

This article examines the historical and political dynamics between secularism and Islamism in the context of modern Turkey, with a focus on two central figures: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Atatürk, as the founder of the Republic of Turkey, established the foundations of the state based on principles of secularism and Western modernism, including the abolition of the Caliphate and reforms in law, education, and public symbols. In contrast, Erdoğan and the Justice and Development Party (AKP) have integrated Islam into national identity through policy reforms, education, and historical discourse. Drawing on perspectives from the politics of religion and political sociology, and employing conceptual frameworks such as Public Religion and Political Islam, this article adopts a qualitative research approach based on library research and Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis to trace the relationship between discourse, power, and the construction of national identity, as well as the ideological dynamics between secular and religious groups in Turkey’s contemporary public sphere. The findings indicate that despite their differing approaches to religion, both Atatürk and Erdoğan employed centralized and symbolic forms of power to shape national narratives. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of state–religion relations in the politics of the modern Muslim world, offering a critical reflection on the future of democracy, pluralism, and religious freedom in Turkey.

Abstract

Infrastructure development in buffer zones such as Maros Regency of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island presents a dilemma between the push for modernization and the preservation of local traditional values. Amid the rapid expansion of roads, bridges, and tourism projects, local communities face disruptions to the social, cultural, and economic spaces that have long sustained their way of life. This study aims to analyze the social responses of the Maros community to infrastructure development, particularly in the context of the tension between tradition and modernity. A qualitative approach was employed, using an exploratory case study design conducted in three villages: Jenetaesa, Tukamasea, and Salenrang. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and local documentation, and analyzed using Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of habitus and social fields. The findings reveal that development has led to the transformation of symbolic spaces, shifts in power relations, and the emergence of unequal access to development benefits. Community responses vary, including forms of cultural resistance, conditional social negotiation, and hybridization between traditional values and modern elements. This study concludes that technocratic development, when lacking cultural sensitivity, poses a threat to social cohesion. Therefore, sustainable development in local contexts requires a participatory approach that recognizes communities as active agents in shaping the direction of change.
