Abstract

This paper critically examines the important roles of the presence of Sufism institutions for the urban middle class. Writing taken from research on the Majelis Shalawat Muhammad in Surabaya and Bojonegoro presents constructive thinking as well as the creative practices of the murshid, Gus Kahar and Gus Mustakim. Both managed to "reconcile" between modernity and spirituality. The concept of positive sufism and positive zuhud based on Gus Kahar and Gud Mustakim make a significant contribution as well as a reference for urban middle-class people who are often confused and uncertain in combining Islam and modernity. In accordance with the mission of Islam from the beginning of its birth, Islam (sufism) taught in the Majelis Shalawat Muhammad was felt to liberate its jama’ah from diseases suffered by urban communities such as the reason for being analyzed, disorientated, distorted, and so on

Abstract

The article focuses on the discussion about ideology reorientation on Urban Sufism?s doctrines in Indonesia in the post Reformation Era. The study puts emphasis on Majelis Shalawat Muhammad and its teachings. The study on the doctrinal teachings based on practices (?amalîyah) of Majelis Shalawat Muhammad provides, on one hand, conceptual data on Sufism teachings within their generic meanings. On the other, it is intended to be a comparative study toward theoretical conceptions on Urban Sufism established by Julia Day Howell, Martin van Bruinessen, and other scholars on the field. This study underlines the relation of guru-murid (murshid and his pupils) in preserving doctrinal teachings and practices of Sufism, which have been uninterruptedly maintained from classical period until nowadays. Within the tradition of Sufism, the relation of guru-murid has generated a term what so-called walîy Allâh. Predicate as walîy Allâh within the personality of a pupil is indicated by his ability to reach and ?open? a dimension of tawhîd which is called mukâshafah. The dimension of mukâshafah has played a pivotal role in maintaining the transmission of teachings and doctrines of Sufism from generation to generation and ensuring their sustainability.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article examines an important aspect that has not been widely studied in previous writings, namely the dimensions of the contestation of radical Islamic groups and moderate Islamic groups in the 2019 electoral political stage. The representation of radical Islam is represented by the GNPF-MUI which includes Islamic organizations such as FPI, FUI, Larkar Jihad and others. Meanwhile, moderate Islam is represented by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), some Muhammadiyah and other moderate mass organizations. Behind the frenzy of "Action for Defending Islam" 411, 212, reunion 212, as well as other issues during the 2019 presidential election electoral campaign, there is actually an aspect of the contestation of the two camps in the struggle for Islam in the public sphere and in power politics. Radical Islamic groups carrying the spirit of nativism 'Islamic populism' voiced the agenda of 'political Islam' into the realm of state power through the Prabowo-Sandi camp. Meanwhile, identity political groups are still promoting 'Islam wasyatiyah' with the symbol of the Republic of Indonesia at a fixed price through the Jokowi-Amin camp. This article is based on a qualitative method with a literature study approach from various sources. From the contestation of the two groups, in the end, moderate Islam won, represented by the election of the Jokowi-Makruf Amin pair. Amin, no doubt, does represent the moderate current of Islam where he previously served as Rais Aam of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board. In addition, the pair's victory shows that the dynamics of moderate Islam in Indonesia are still embraced by the majority of Muslims in Indonesia. Keywords: Identity politics; Radical Islam; moderate Islam; 2019 presidential election.

Abstract

This paper discusses the phenomenon of urban sufism among the majelis Shalawat Muhammad under the murshid Gus Kahar in Surabaya with followers (disciples) spreading in various places especially East Java, even abroad. The theory of continuity and change is used to critically review Howell’s concept on urban sufism, and to present key concepts on sufism in its generic sense in terms of doctrine and empirical praxis. Although based in Surabaya, the doctrine and praxis of urban sufism in the Majelis Shalawat Muhammad reflects generic sufi teachings. The findings of this research reveal that the principle of continuity and change prevails in sufi tradition from time to time. This finding is different from Howell’s theory which stress on ritual dimension. The followers of Shalawat Muhammad emphasize more on education on the basis of praxis (sālik-sulūk, riyāḥah, and mujāhadah), in addition to the dimension of doctrine itself.

Abstract

This article critically examines the role of Sufism in the process of social change in society, especially among urban societies that are symbolized by their middle class society. The subjectin this study is the Shalawat Muhammad Assembly under Mursyid Gus Kahar and his successor,Gus Mustakim. Although the assembly represents the urban sufism, but it has rooted fromclassical Sufism. In analyzing the role of this assembly in the process of social change in society, the theoretical framework of Cultural Brokers and Cultural Trendsetter of Geertz and Hirokosiare used as perspectives. The result simultaneously, consistently, and progressively shows thatSufism has a major contribution in any social change of societies to the value and ideology fromthe outside. The inherent value system in Sufism symbolized by the guru (murshid), is not just arole as a cultural broker as mentioned by the theory of Geertz. In fact, all gurus (mursyid) arewilling to change the value and ideology from the outside into a new system of traditions andcultures. This phenomenon resembles the cultural role of kyai in the Islamization of Indonesiain the past. It is the same like the theory of the cultural trendsetter of Hirokosi

Abstract

This article examines the rise of Islamic populism in post-truth Indonesia. It particularly discusses the proliferation of Islamic populism narratives in social media that lead to hoaxes and hate speeches which appeared in series of political elections. This article argues that there has been a similar pattern of Indonesian form of populism to that of other parts of western countries, particularly the US and the UK. Like populism in the latter two countries, the issue of “indigeneity” has generated the reproduction of post-truth narrates, ranging from false-news, hoaxes, and hate-speeches, blaiming the so-called “foreign” elements of the country. Islamist mobilisation is central to explain the proliferation of post-truth politics which cultivates tensions and divisions among society and reserves as a threat to democratic consolidation in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

This article reexamines and rediscusses the importance of the dimensions of Sufism virtues as the foundational spirit of Indonesian Islamic education today amidst its social dynamics. This article is based on participatory research on psudo-Sufism, namely the Shalawat Adlimiyah located in districts of Bojonegoro and Pasuruan. Findings show that the Sufism dimension is effective in reducing moral decadence and strengthening character education. The teacher-student relationship as the core of Sufism teachings is the entry point as well as a capital for the processes of shaping personality and morality, both of which are the essential in character education. This practice has occurred for hundreds of years in the tradition of Sufism education and is still ongoing today. One of its representations is through Sufism education in the circles of Shalawat Adlimiyah. This paper suggests that mainstreaming Sufism values into the practice of Islamic education is urgently needed in addressing the problems of contemporary Indonesian Islamic education.
