Abstract

The rapid development of new media has been the main force accelerating the trend of globalization in human societyin recent decades. New media has brought human interaction and society to a highly interconnected and complex level, but at the same time challenged the very existence of intercultural communication in its traditional sense. It is under thiscircumstance that we see more and more scholars becoming involved in the investigation of the relationship between new media and intercultural communication. Emerging topical areas in this line of research mainly include three categories: (1) the impact of national/ethnic culture on the development of new media, (2) the impact of new media on cultural/social identity, and (3) the impact of new media (especially social media) on different aspects of intercultural communication (e.g., intercultural relationships, intercultural adaptation, and intercultural conflict). This paper discusses this trend of research on the relationship between new media and intercultural communication.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to understand the dynamics of intercultural communication in the adaptation process of interethnic marriages between Javanese and Madurese couples in Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. The primary focus is on how couples from different cultural backgrounds develop communication patterns and adjust to one another in their household life. This research employs a qualitative approach using a phenomenological design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three interethnic couples who have been married for more than two years. The findings reveal that communication within interethnic households is adaptive and context-dependent. Indonesian is predominantly used as the main language of interaction, serving as a neutral medium easily understood by both parties, while regional languages are preserved for specific cultural situations. Challenges in communication arise from differences in emotional expression and communication styles, which often lead to misunderstandings, especially during the early stages of marriage. However, couples who engage in open and respectful communication are able to overcome these differences and create a harmonious relationship. Cultural adaptation is also reflected in parenting practices, division of household roles, and interactions with extended families. Support from extended families significantly contributes to the process of cultural acceptance. In conclusion, interethnic marriages between Javanese and Madurese couples represent an ongoing negotiation of values and the formation of a new, inclusive family identity through mutual understanding and culturally respectful communication.

Abstract

This study examines acculturative symbolism and interfaith tolerance through the implementation of the Unan-Unan Ceremony in Tosari District, Tengger region, using a qualitative case study approach and Herbert Blumer's symbolic interactionism theory as an analytical tool. The Unan-Unan tradition, as a sacred five-year ritual of the Tengger Hindu community, not only carries spiritual meanings such as warding off evil and purifying nature but also serves as a space for social interaction actively involving the Muslim community, particularly in social, cultural, and logistical aspects. Cultural symbols such as offerings, mantras, and collective prayers are interpreted as the result of negotiations and the formation of cross-religious collective identity. The research findings indicate that the symbolism in this tradition represents values of tolerance, mutual aid, and teposliro, thereby strengthening an inclusive and harmonious social structure within a multicultural society. The Unan-Unan ceremony serves as tangible evidence that a cultural approach can create spaces for tolerance and harmony among religious groups without erasing their respective identities. Thus, this tradition is not only significant as a cultural heritage but also as a model of diversity and social peace in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study analyzes negative framing and its impact on cultural stereotypes in the "Rendang Hilang" controversy by content creator @Willie Salim on TikTok. Through a qualitative approach with framing analysis and comment content analysis, this study identifies how negative framing in videos and echo chamber effects reinforce stereotypes against Palembang society. The results showed that the visualization and narrative chosen in the video, combined with social media algorithms, exacerbated social prejudice and polarization of opinions. The implications of this study highlight the importance of media literacy and critical awareness in responding to viral content on social media.
