Abstract

Impression stage is an important step in dentistry. The impression itself can be a media of infection transmisions due to microorganisms in the oral cavity. Therefore it is necessary to disinfect the impression before casting process. Dimensional stability is a factor that can affect accuracy of gypsum casts, meanwhile the elastomeric impression materials are not usually casted immediatelly. To determine effect of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine gluconate disinfectans with various casting time, on the dimensional stability of condensation silicone gypsum casts. A total of 30 samples were made using condensation silicone impression materials. The impressions were disinfected in 5,25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or 0,2% chlorhexidine gluconate (Chx). The impression was casted in various time intervals 0, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours with type III gypsum product. Dimensional changes were measured and the data obtained were analyzed using SPSS 17 with two-way ANOVA, post hoc LSD and unpaired t-test. Sodium hypochlorite caused greater dimensional changes (0,49%) than chlorhexidine gluconate (0,44%). Significant dimensional changes were detected after the casting was delayed for more than 24 hours (p <0.05). Sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine gluconate do not cause dimensional changes, assuming that condensation silicone impression is casted in maximum time of 24 hours. Disinfection of condensation silicone impression material in chlorhexidine gluconate presents better dimensional stability than sodium hypochlorite.

Abstract

Composite dental resin consists of polymer with reinforcement materials, such as quartz, silica, glass, and short fibers, they generally came from natural resources that cannot be renewed. Natural fibers sisal (Agave sisalana), has an abundance of it and can be cultivated and renewed, which protects the environment’s ecosystem. Generally, natural fibers are hydrophilic, but can change to hydrophobic by alkalization. This can be used as an alternative reinfocrmrnt material to used instead in dental composite. This research used sisal fiber (Balittas-Malang), acrylic resin (QC-20). Alkalization used NaOH 6%, neutralization used acetic acid 2%. Utilities that used such were: SEM and universal testing machine. The data of 8 sample sized 60×10×4 mm were analyzed with independent t-test. The micro sisal preparation resulted in particle sized 0,075-100 µm, the mean of unfilled acrylic resin was 109,20 ± 3,12 MPa micro sisal reinforced acrylic resinwas and 94,42 ± 9,35 MPa (K) with significant difference. A decreasing flexural strength is caused by a change of characteristic from hydrophilic (beginning) to hydrophobic (scouring) and changed to hydrophilic again in the neutralization process using acetate acid. Conclusion of this research was the adduction of microsisal without coupling agent reduced the flexural strength of acrylic resin.

Abstract

Indonesian Natural Sand, Zircon, is an Indonesia’s natural resource that contains zirconia, silica, titania and alumina. In Dentistry, zirconia as one of the content in natural zircon sand, have the potential to be the material for filler composites. The purpose of this research was to analyze the Zirconia-Calcium-Silicate Particle (ZrO2CaO-SiO2) synthesized from Indonesia natural sand, zircon, in microstructural way. Methods: By synthesizing ZirconiaCalcium-Silicate particle (ZrO2-CaO-SiO2) from Indonesia natural zircon sand, using spray pyrolysis method. A precursor solution that is used consists of zirconil nitrate (Zr (NO3) 2), sodium silicate (Na2SiO3), and calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH) 2). Variations in the temperature of the reactor that are used were 4000C, 4500C, and 5000C with a feed rate of 6 L / min and a piezoelectric frequency of 1.7 MHz. Result showed that the better content in zirconia-calcium-silicate is the one that was synthesized at a temperature of 4500C, based on the results of EDS, SEM and XRD. The composition that is obtained in the zirconia-calcium-silicate particle has a ratio of 1: 14: 4 with the size of 500-1000nm, and has a tetragonal crystal zirconium silicate structure and dicalcium monoclinic silicate. From this research it can be concluded that the result that was synthesized at a temperature of 4500C is adequate to use as a filler based on the characterization result of SEM and XRD.

Abstract

Dental plaque is a colorless thin layer, is not easily visible on the tooth surface and it causes caries. Disclosing solution is the material that can help us to see dental plaque. Chemical disclosing solution, which now exists, has several disadvantages so we need to develop natural disclosing solution. One of the ingredients in natural disclosing solution that has been studied for its effect is betacyanin, which is contained in super-red dragon fruit (Hylocereus costaricensis). This study aim to observe the coloring effect of super-red dragon fruit juice. The experimental was conducted by measuring plaque index of 20 people, who were not to clean their teeth for 24 hours (two periods), and were eaten the same foods in each period. Examination of plaque index at the end of the first period used chemical disclosing solution contains of erythrosine (FDC Red #3) and the second period used super-red dragon fruit juice. The datas were analyzed by Paired T-test. The results of the plaque index score at the first (2.47815 ± 0.811497), the second (2.7731 ± 1.0512) and did not find a significant difference (p > 0.05). The ability of super-red dragon fruit to coloring dental plaque has no difference with chemical disclosing solution, so it can be used as a natural disclosing solution.

Abstract

Chitosan powder when dissolved with acetat acid solution gives viscous solution. The accessibility of chitosan depends on viscosity of its solution. The viscosity determines the extent of penetration of chitosan. The aim of this study was to account the proliferation cells on wound healing process of dental extraction using different viscosity of chitosan gel. Rattus nornegicus strain wistar male, aged 8-16 weeks, divided into 2 treatment groups namely group 1 which given chitosan gel with high viscosity and group II which given chitosan with low viscosity. Chitosan were applied into the socket of dental extraction. Rat was decaputated 7 and 14 days after chitosan application and the jaw in the treated regions and control group were cut for histopatological to observe the proliferation cells. Data were analyzed using t test. The result showed significant differences of proliferation cells between groups with high and low viscosity of chitosan. The group with high viscosity of chitosan have more higher of proliferation cells.(p<0,05). The viscosity can influence the absorbtion of chitosan that accessibility to its application on proliferation cells of wound healing process.

Abstract

Composite resins are becoming more popular in restorative dentistry, particularly because of their superior esthetic properties. Composite resin may suffer degradation over time, which can be predicted by microstructural changes on its surface due to acidic conditions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microstructural changes of the surface of hybrid resin composite after immersed in acidic energy drinks of pH 3,2; 3,7; and 3,9 for 2 hours. Hybrid resin composites were cured with LED light curing unit. Specimens of 2 mm depth and 7 mm diameter were divided into 3 experimentals and 1 control. Each experimental was immersed in different energy drinks with different pH respectively (pH 3,2; 3,7; 3,9) and the control was immersed in aquadest for 2 hours. The surface roughness was measured using surface roughness measuring instrument before and after immersion then the Microstructural changes were evaluated under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Surface roughness measuring instrument and SEM analysis showed, the erosion and surface degradation to all 3 hybrid resin composites after being subjected to the experimental conditions. The surface of hybrid resin composite undergoes noticeable microstructural changes after being immersed in energy drinks of pH 3.2, 3.7 and 3.9 for 2 hours.

Abstract

The advances in restorative materials and adhesive technology plays an important role in dentistry. Adhesive system is currently the main choice for shifting in the principle of “extension for prevention” to “minimally invasive”. In this case, composite resin restorations class IV discoloration accompanied by hypocalcification circumstances was found. Class IV restoration is the restoration of the anterior teeth interproximal surfaces that involve the incisal edge of the tooth, while enamel hypocalcification is opaque white patches on the surface of the email that usually occurs due shortly matrix enamel hypomineralization and is often found in the maxillary incisor teeth. Restoration of class IV composite in this case was done by preparation minimally invasive techniques incremental in filling composite resin, estethic contouring with the use of composite tints and opaquers, as well as finishing and polishing both showed satisfactory results with minimal cost when compared to the restoration of full crown.

Abstract

The existence of composite resin as dental restorative materials in the mouth will always be exposed to temperature changes from food or drink. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on water absorption and solubility of the composite resin. Thirty samples made from nanofiller composite resin with a diameter of 15 mm and a thickness of 1 mm. The samples were divided into three test groups (n=10) that is immersed at 50 (I), 37 (II) and 5 °C (III). The testing procedure of water sorption and solubility of the composite resin made according to the ISO 4049: 2000 specifications. Data will be analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Least Significance Data test (p=0,05). The results showed there is significant differences of the water sorption (p=0,045) and solubility (p=0,018). The highest water sorption is group I (0,0057±0,007µg/mm3) than group II (0,0028±0,0013 µg/mm) and group III (0,0005±0,0006 µg/mm). While the heighest solubility values are in group I (0,003 ± 0,0027 µg/ mm), than group II (0,002 ± 0,0013 µg/mm) and group III (0,001 ± 0,00 µg/mm). It can be concluded that temperature could increase water sorption and solubility of composite resin.
