Abstract

Prevention of dental caries in children can be done with topical fluoride as well as pit and fissure sealant. Topical fluoride application followed by pit and fissure sealant is still controversial because it allegedly could impair the bond between pit and fissure sealant materials to the teeth, so that it can lead to microleakage. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 5% NaF and 1.23% APF on microleakage of RMGIC and flowable composite as pit and fissure sealant materials. Thirty extracted premolars were prepared and then divided into three groups: without topical fluoride, with application of 5% NaF (Enamelast, USA), and with application of 1.23% APF (60 Second Taste, USA); then filled using RMGIC (GC Fuji II LC, Japan) and flowable composite (Esthet.Xflow, USA). The teeth were soaked in methylene blue and then cut buccolingually. Microleakage was observed using stereomicroscope and scored in an ordinal scale. The Kruskal-Wallis test on RMGIC groups was not significant, while in the flowable composite groups was significant (p <0.05). Mann-Whitney test showed a significant difference between the RMGIC and flowable composite groups after application of 1.23% APF. It can be concluded that microleakage of pit and fissure sealant using a flowable composite was higher than RMGIC after application of 1.23% APF.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country in tropic area so there are many variatif natural materials. The potency of natural material is a plant which produce fiber for textile industry. The raw textile material in Indonesia are cotton, kapok, rami, rosella, banana and pineapple. Dental treatment use fiber for fiber reinforced composite (FRC) to make denture, dental splinting, post, restoration and retainer. Fiber dental material is a synthetic material imported from other country, some of them doesn’t environment friendly. Many country concern of go green program to save the earth. Fiber reseach must do to find composition, strength, and suitable for dental appliance. Study for the new fiber will done in order to make cheap fiber, last longer and biodegradable material.

Abstract

Fiber reinforced composite is a material composed of matrix and reinforced by fiber. Fiber sisal is a natural fiber an alternatives synthetic fiber developed as dental material. Resin composite matrix is a hydrophilic substance that cause dimensional change. Alkalization of sisal fiber reduces the ability of hydrophilic sites which affects the dimensional changes. The aim of this study was to determine how different period of immersion affect dimensional change in samples. The samples used in this research were FRC made from flowable resin composite (Master Flow, Brazil), and alkalized sisal fiber. The samples were shaped into cuboid measuring 25x2x2 mm. Fiber was placed in the middle of sample with continuous unidirectional direction and then irradiated for 20 seconds using LCU. A total of 16 samples were divided to 4 groups, each group with the different period of immersion 0, 7, 14 and 21 days respectively. Dimensional changes were measured by the final dimension minus the initial dimension. Dimensional change was measured by the length, width, and height using digital sliding caliper with 0.001 mm nonius. The samples were immersed in the artificial saliva with pH 7. The data was analyzed using one way Anova and followed by LSD0.05. The result shows the mean value and standard deviation of dimensional changes with period of immersion at 0, 7, 14 and 21 days were 0.264±0.085, 2.856±0.089, 4.417±0.115 and 4.294±0.087 mm3. The F value obtained from one way Anova was 1.640±103 and the significance was 0.001 (p<0.05), indicated a significance difference. LSD presented a significance difference of mean to all treat, ent except for 14th and 21th day. This study concluded that various period of immersion increase effect to the dimensional changes of FRC with alkalized fiber sisal.

Abstract

Today the dental porcelain is used as one option for the manufacture of dental restorations with the development of esthetic dentistry. Beside the advantages there are also disadvantages of porcelain is its britlle so easily fracture. Factors such as impact, fatigue, occlusal pressure, and the mismatch between the physical properties of metals can lead to fracture of porcelain. Fractures often occur in the maxilla (75%) and especially on the labial surface (60%). Porcelain fracture in the anterior region will interfere with the appearance of the patient. Replacement of defective restorations are not necessarily the most practical solution because it takes a long time and cost. One alternative way to handle that is to repair in the mouth. Intraoral repair to do is to use a composite resin and an assortment of treatments on porcelain and metal surfaces such as coarsening with diamond drills, sandblasting and acid hidrofluoride applications.Next, applied primer and the selected composite materials which can be universal composites. Fracture of the porcelain restoration porcelain crowns can be repaired in the mouth in a simple manner. Repair materials are used together with direct composite materials differ only in the etching material.

Abstract

Bleaching is a dental procedure to repair tooth discoloration by using chemical agents such as 35% hydrogen peroxide. The bleaching agents may cause a side effect, such as a decrease in shear bond strength of composite resin. This can be overcome with the use of antioxidants such as 10% sodium ascorbate which can reduce residual oxygen from the bleaching agents. Antioxidants are also found in a rosella flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of rosella flower extract on shear bond strength of composite resin to bleached teeth. A 35% hydrogen peroxide was applied to thirty premolar teeth. The teeth were divided into three groups: group I (without an antioxidant), group II (using 10% sodium ascorbate), and group III (using rosella flower extract); then a composite resin was applied on the teeth surfaces. The shear bond strength was measured by Universal Testing Machine. The data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and post-hoc LSD. The mean of shear bond strength (MPa) for group I was 17.74±1.49, group II was 23.25±1.64, and group III was 19.31±1.01. The results of stastitical tests showed significant differences among the groups (p<0.05). The conclusion of this study is the rosella flower extract increased the shear bond strength of composite resin to bleached teeth, however it showed lower shear bond strength compared to 10% sodium ascorbate.

Abstract

Tuak aren is traditional alcoholic beverages from North Sumatera especially consumed by Bataknese and Simalungunese. Some of those people are the heat cured acrylic denture wearers. This purpose of this research is to study the effect of immersion duration of heat cured acrylic resin in “Tuak aren” towards surface roughness and impact strength. The samples are heat cured acrylic resin plate with a size of 65 x 10 x 2,5 mm for testing the surface roughness and 80 x 10 x 4 mm for testing the impact strength. There are total 12 groups, 6 groups for surface roughness test and 6 groups for impact strength test. Each group consists of 6 samples. Either treatment sample (“Tuak aren”) and control sample (aquadest) were immersed for 5, 10 and 15 days. Based on T-Independent test, there were significant differences of surface roughness (∆Ra) and impact strength of heat cured acrylic resin between after being immersed in “Tuak aren” and in aquadest for 5, 10, and 15 days. Then, based on One-Way Anova test, the result showed various immersion duration have no significant influenced on surface roughness (∆Ra) (p > 0,05) but various immersion duration have significant influenced on impact strength (p < 0,05). Heat cured acrylic resin denture base exposed to “Tuak aren” for three years can decrease its impact strength nevertheless the changes of surface roughness doesn’t occur significantly.
