Abstract

Critical thinking is not a new concept but one that goes all the way back to more than two thousand years ago when Socrates developed a way of questioning to look into the rationality of how people thought, learned and examined issues that needed answers and solutions.  The development of civilization throughout the ages, however, has always influenced the way people are educated and learn the skills needed in order to understand and deal with questions that come up within contexts that are new and may still be unfamiliar.  In the process of such developments, views with regard to the way people think and reason out issues change to suit the needs and demands of the time.  It is in this manner that critical thinking became ignored in the education of young people. Today, however, critical thinking has been brought back into education, and the reason could very well be that current demands on students make it necessary for them to learn to understand and function rationally in today’s fast-changing world with its varied and multi-complex problems.Developments in technology have brought about unprecedented amounts of information at speeds never before anticipated.  What happens in one small corner of the world is known globally the instant it occurs.  Education that continues to focus only on the teaching of “reading, writing and ‘rithmetic” would be straying off course from the directions that should be taken in order to cope with today’s as well as future needs.  It is for this reason that training in critical thinking should be a vital part of the educational curriculum today. Keywords: Critical thinking, education, curriculum

Abstract

Deixis is a technical term for one of the most basic things we do with utterance. When we ask someone, “come here!” We are using a context in the utterance, such as who is speaking to whom, what relation they have, the time or place of speaking, the gesture of the speaker and what status the interaction participants have.  Conncerning to the background of the research, there are two questions raised in this research they are: (1)  What deictic expressions found on EFL ’Written Essay Grade III At English Department At FKIP UHN Pematangsiantar, (2) What are the possible interpretation appeared from the deictic expressions found n EFL ’Written Essay Grade III At English Department At FKIP UHN Pematangsiantar. The researcher used some theories related with deixis such as Yule (1995, p. 9), Levinson (1983, p. 55), Lyon (1983, p. 275), and James (1983, p. 63). This research is conducted using a descriptive qualitative research.There are 70 students (academic year 2015) taking Professional Development for English Teacher subject at English Department at FKIP UHN Pematangsiantar. The researcher asked the students to perform and tell their expectations after being an English teacher in the future. After doing the analysis from the whole data of the research, the writer found the research findings:  there are some types of deixis in the students’ writing. Person deixis is used in the students’ writing because the writer shows their thinking and their understanding. In the person deixis is used in the text, first person deixis is most dominant that the researcher found in the text. It is because of the writer tells their willing to be a teacher in the future. As a whole, after the data have been analyzed by the researcher, there are some types of deixis in the students’ writing. Person deixis is used in the students’ writing because the writer shows their thinking and their understanding. In the person deixis is used in the text, first person deixis is most dominant that the researcher found in the text. Abstract

The aim of this paper is looking on the impact of English as a global language from an angle of how English language is used in local printed advertising media in Jakarta particularly on fliers. Discussion takes place by comparing two different brands in the city: a local brand advertisement and an international/multinational brand advertisement which sells similar product. Linguistic elements such as lexical category (verbs, nouns, etc.) are the focal point of the discussion. It can be said, at the end, that the local brands try to get brand power and position in the market through the usage of English language (as language choice), product name, logo, and even the content message in brochures and menus. Meanwhile it seems that the international brand uses adaptation technique to call for Indonesianisation of their product. Keywords: English as global language, advertisement, linguistic elements

Abstract

In learning English, one main problem that learners often encounter is learning vocabulary. Learners cannot use English to communicate if they do not have enough words or vocabulary to convey what they want to say. That is why, learning vocabulary is important. However, it is not always easy to learn vocabulary. Learning vocabulary can be troublesome. One type of vocabulary which is confusing for learners to learn is adjectives, especially verbal adjectives. Verbal adjectives are adjectives which are derived from verbs. These adjectives usually have –ed and –ing ending. Some examples are ‘bored’, ‘boring’, ‘confused’, ‘confusing’, ‘excited’, ‘exciting’, etc. These adjectives are often confusing for learners of English. Based on this problem, the writer decided to conduct research about this adjective. However, the writer only wants to analize and discuss the adjectives that end with –ed. The specific word that is going to be analized is ‘excited’. Since this research is corpus based research, the research will focus on the verbs that collocate with the adjective ‘excited’. The writer will see how many verbs that frequently collocate with ‘excited’. After that, the writer will see the differences between those verbs. Abstract

Learning vocabulary is the most fundamental aspects of learning for students in learning the language. In the process, the teacher is expected to be a good facilitator so that the vocabulary learning process can proceed smoothly. Creativity in learning vocabulary is absolutely necessary. Scavenger Hunt technique  was chosen as the solution of the saturation experienced by students in the process of learning English vocabulary. The purpose of this reseach is improving the mastery and understanding of the students' vocabulary appropriate with context and function of everyday use, through the application of Scavenger Hunt technique. Moreover, this teaching technique is also expected to add a new learning experience for students. The research was carried out in Gema Insani Indonesia Foundation by employing a classroom action research with two cycles of assessments. There were 18 third grade elementary school students as an object of the research. The data was collected by observation, note taking, and test. The findings showed an increase in the ability of  students’ mastery and understanding of the meaning of the vocabulary through the application of  Scavenger Hunt technique  that can be seen from the increase in student’s mean score on the second cycle with 82 that is considered as good predicate. Keywords: scavenger hunt, vocabulary, vocabulary learning

Abstract

This research analyzes the structure of argumentation used in the articles of the Jakarta Post newspaper from 20 August until 22 September 2010. It also has the purpose to find out the way the journalist constructs the argumentation in his article.This research uses a descriptive method. The researcher takes the data from the articles of the Jakarta Post newspaper dated from 20 August until 22 September 2010. The researcher collects the data using text observation. After that, the researcher analyzes the data using related theories in order to find out the structure of argumentation in the headlines of the Jakarta Post newspaper.After the writer analyzes the data using the related theories, the writer finds each elements of argumentation that exists in the articles of the Jakarta Post newspaper.In conclusion, the structure of argumentation used by the journalist from the Jakarta Post newspaper in the article about terrorism dated from August 20, 2010 until September 22, 2010 can be ordered into: first the journalist gives the probability claims. After that, the journalist provides the second order data and first order data. To make the data and claim related, the journalist gives the authoritative warrants. Then, to advocate the warrant the journalist gives the backing and the qualifiers for the restricted data if the data uses foundation and the claim is not clear and accurate. Keywords: argumentative discourse, structure of argumentation

Abstract

This study deals with the effect of hamburger strategy on writing descriptive text. Hamburger strategy is a writing organizer strategy that visually outlines the key components of a paragraph. When writing by using hamburger strategy, the students will learn to remember how to build the paragraph and the importance of each component. It was conducted by using experimental quantitative research. The population of this study is the first semester  students of English Department Nommensen Medan. The writer takes 50 students as the sample and they are devided into two groups by using random sampling. The first group was  group A as Experimental class which is taught by implementing hamburger strategy while the second group is Group B as control class which is taught by using conventional method. Oral test is used  as the instrument of collecting the data. This test consists of two types, namely pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shows t-observed that is 3. 58, which  is higher than t-table that is 1.676 at the level significance  (p: 0.05) with the degree of freedom (df) 48. It means that Ha is accepted while Ho is rejected, therefore it is concluded that hamburger  strategy  significantly affects on writing descriptive text of the first semester students of English Department in Nommensen University Medan academic year 2016/2017. It is suggested for the students of English Department as source of valuable knowledge and information when conducting a research related to the study. It is also suggested that teachers of English subject should implement hamburger strategy as one of alternative in teaching writing to increase students’ writing ability.Keywords:  hamburger strategy, writing hortatory exposition text

Abstract

Due to a narrative that speeches may assist with understanding gender identity indexical(s) in politics, this study aims to discover such meanings underneath the text production of Hillary Clinton’s concession speech post-defeat in the latest US presidential election. Through Critical Discourse Analysis – Text as A Critical Object (CDA – TACO), it seems evident in Hillary Clinton’s speech that there are patriotic lexical choices, parallelism, alliteration, anthropomorphization, and repetition for emphasis, personal pronoun “I” and “my”, suggesting a certain degree of assertiveness, which are generally specific to male politicians (Reyes, 2015). There is a marked use of collective pronoun “we”, “our”, connoting a level of intimacy between the speaker and audience, interestingly however, evidenced not only on Clinton’s speech but male politicians as wel, thus rendering it gender-neutral. Evidences of backgrounding, thus distancing self, when the politician utters disappointments are noticeable. Findings partially prove that gender-driven lexical choice by Hillary Clinton noticeably conforms to those of male orators in politics, although most of her expressions suggest commonality of political speeches. Abstract

This research aims to assess the translation quality by comparing the source text and the target text. The researcher decided to compare the speech by Barack Obama in 2012 United Nations General Assembly and its translation in Indonesian. The model that the researcher used to find out the translation quality is Translation Quality Assessment: A Model Revisited by Juliane House. The model focuses on comparing both source and target text in order to acquire some mismatches and errors before concluding the statement of quality. In the end, the researcher got the conclusion that the interpersonal function is slightly changed while the ideational function remains the same. Moreover, the researcher also concluded that this model is more appropriate to be used in assessing the translation quality of explicit texts such as texts with informative and operative purposes.Keywords: translation quality assessment, speech, juliane house, mismatches, errors

Abstract

The following study is intended to find out which is the highest use of metacognitive reading strategies among the academic learners majoring in English Language and Culture, Bunda Mulia University Jakarta. First of all metacognition discusses the process of an individual in planning and managing oneself in order to achieve his or her goal. In the other words, metacognitive strategies are steps that learners take for improving their language performances. Based on SORS (Survey of Reading Strategies) questionnaire, there are four categories being scored in the reading metacogntive strategies. They are global reading strategies, problem-solving strategies,, and support reading strategies. The result showed that academic learners mostly apply the problem-solving strategies, followed by global reading strategies, and support reading strategies.         Keywords: Metacognitive, Strategies, Reading Classes
