Abstract

Periodontal disease is a disease caused by damage to the tooth supporting tissue starting from inflammation of the gingiva which is reversible and then gets worse until there is loss of tooth supporting tissue and periodontitis. During the Covid-19 pandemic, people were encouraged to postpone dental treatment or not come to the dentist's office. It was found that an increased inflammatory response as a result of SARS-CoV-2 infection could trigger periodontitis and this is because the presence of periodontal disease is a predisposing factor for Covid-19. Descriptive observational study through panoramic and periapical radiographic data in March-September 2022, then the results were entered into distribution tables and graphs. Periodontal disease was found to be most prevalent in males. Based on age, most occurred in the adult age group, and the most common periodontal disease found was chronic periodontitis which occurred mostly in men. It is concluded that the prevalence of periodontal disease in RSGMP Universitas Hasanuddin Makassar after the pandemic is high due to people who are still not free to go to the dentistas an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Abstract

Mentawai white sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) is one of the benthic fauna that can be used as a natural antibacterial treatment. White sea cucumber contains saponin, alkaloid and terpenoid compounds that have antibacterial effects. This study was conducted to determine the antibacterial effect of ethanol extract of Mentawai white sea cucumber against Streptococcus sanguinis, and to determine the concentration of ETP extract that is effective in inhibiting S.sanguinis which was carried out in a laboratory experimental with a posttest only control group design. The extract was made using maceration extraction method. The inhibition zone test method used disc diffusion with 5 samples in each treatment group. The samples consisted of 5 treatment groups, namely 6%, 8%, 10% ETP extract; positive control chlorhexidine 0.2% and negative control ethanol 96%. Data analysis used independent t-test. The results showed that 6%, 8% ETP extract had no inhibition zone but 10% had an inhibition zone of 0.97 mm, 0.2% chlorhexidine of 5.164 mm and 96% ethanol had no inhibition zone. It is concluded that 10% mentawai ATP extract has an antibacterial effect against S.sanguinis but in the weak category and less effective at 0.2% chlorhexidine.

Abstract

According to the 2018 Basic Health Research or Riskesdas, 57.6% of the Indonesian population admitted to having oral health problems. Patients with malocclusion in Indonesia are high despite the low demand for orthodontic treatment due to lack of knowledge about malocclusion. WHO defines malocclusion as an abnormality that can cause damage or interfere with occlusion function and may be an obstacle to the patient's physical and emotional health. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge about malocclusion and the need for orthodontic treatment in children aged 9-12 years through quantitative research with descriptive observation method. The correlation coefficient value was obtained as 0.796. This shows that there is a very strong positive relationship between the level of knowledge of Tamalanrea State Elementary School students aged 9-12 years with malocclusion. In addition, a significance value of 0.002 (<0.01 or 0.05) was also obtained, which means that there is a significant relationship between knowledge and the incidence of malocclusion. It is concluded that there is a significant relationship between children and parents' knowledge and the incidence of malocclusion in children.
