Abstract

The graduates of English education departments are supposed to possess an advanced level of English, the knowledge of which is essential when becoming educators. Consequently, it is important to recognize prevailing grammatical errors that they commit, since teaching what is essentially flawed language use may cause damaging consequences. This study examines six undergraduate research articles from an English education department to determine common errors in the use of bound morphemes, which come into focus considering their consistent occurrences. This descriptive qualitative research describes and examines the errors in both inflectional and derivational categories. The result of the study shows that the high number of errors in bound morphemes that mark a plural noun as well as present and past tense can be attributed to the similarly high number of their uses in academic writing. Also, the grammatical issues that need to be addressed are those of non-finite verb phrases and noun phrases. A conclusion that can be drawn is that the bound morpheme errors are largely preventable. Suggestions to avoid the errors are then offered.

Abstract

Measure word is a group of words functions as a noun counter and complementing a numeral. Each language has a different set and types of measure words. Korean has a lot of measure words and it is used based on the semantic feature of the counted noun. This paper examines types of Korean measure words in a culinary-related text. Data were collected from recipes written in Korean. Then, Data were classified and analyzed to see the similarities and differences between those measure words. Our results showed that there are four types of Korean measure words. First, measure words that are standard measurement units (e.g geuraem 'gram' and litheo 'liter'). Second, measure words that are Korean traditional measurement units like geun. Third, measure words that came from measuring tools like byeong 'bottle' and keunsul 'spoon' and the last, measure words that are classifiers. In a phrasal structure, measure words placed after the numeral, and the noun is mainly placed before the numeral but it also can be placed after the measure words by adding a genitive particle -eui between the measure word and noun. Commonly-used measure words and classifiers that have one-to-one equivalent word in Indonesian will be easier to learn by learners from Indonesian background.

Abstract

This research discusses the forms and functions of interrogative marker ka and defines its use in Japanese public service advertisements, which AC Japan distributes. The method that is used in this research is a descriptive qualitative study. The research data is sentences with interrogative marker ka, which is found in AC Japan advertisements distributed on Japanese television in the last five years (2017-2021). The theory of forms and functions of interrogative marker ka by Yokoyama (2013) was used in this research. The watch-note technique was used in this research to collect data that would be needed. The data were analyzed with formalist and functionalist approaches. After that, the data would be analyzed by aspects of speech that affect the forms and functions of interrogative marker ka. The result showed that the interrogative marker ka in AC Japan advertisements has a function to state common questions, rhetorical questions, conjectural questions, polar imperatives, and embedded questions. From these several functions, rhetorical questions are more widely used because advertising is an indirect communication medium, which still has to pay attention to the emphasis on the message to be conveyed.

Abstract

This study explores the dynamics of intercultural communication between Niels Evens, a Belgian business owner, and his Indonesian workers in the Murianto Workshop in Jepara, Central Java. Drawing upon the Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) by Giles and Coupland and the Conversational Constraints Theory (CCT) by Kim, the study discusses the interplay of cultural adaptation and communication strategies. The objectives of this study are to understand the implementation of CAT and CCT by the owner and the workers of Murianto Workshop in Jepara, Central Java, and also to identify the constraints during the communication between the owner and the workers of Murianto Workshop. The data for this research was gathered through a semi-structured interview conducted with Niels Evens and presented descriptively. The finding shows that Niels Evens’ effort to adapt and understand the local culture can be called convergence from the Communication Accommodation Theory. Although many of his actions reflect collectivist tendencies, he establishes boundaries with his workers to maintain a professional work environment. From the Conversational Constraints Theory, it can be concluded that the constraints faced by Niels Evens are about clarity and effectiveness concerns. The constraints he faced are related to the change of communication strategy from a direct to an indirect approach, which is also his constraint in adapting to the local culture.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the different types of onomatopoeia in Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan Volume 1 manga. Attack on Titan is the English title of the Japanese manga series Shingeki no Kyojin, written by Hajime Isayama. The researchers selected Attack on Titan Volume 1 manga as the object of study because the plot in the early beginning of the story uses various onomatopoeic words to enhance the action scenes and intensity of the battles. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach to describe the types of onomatopoeia using the theory stated by Bredin (1996). The data were collected by reading all the chapters in Attack on Titan volume 1 manga, taking notes of the onomatopoeias found throughout the story, and identifying their type and function. The findings of this research show that 99 data of onomatopoeic words are found in the manga, consisting of 55 direct onomatopoeia, 14 associative onomatopoeia, and 32 exemplary onomatopoeia. Direct onomatopoeia appeared more frequently than the other two forms because many character movements and natural sounds happen throughout the story.
