Abstract

Gender differences can affect the use of language and socially divide it into male and female language. This study aims to analyze female and male language features spoken by male and female characters in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire novel and the social contexts that causes differences in language use in that fictional story using Coates’s (2016) theory of language features and Holmes’s (2013) theory of language and social context. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was used through two stages to collect and analyze data; quantitative and qualitative. The results show that the dominant female language feature is hedge while the male ones are command and directives. However, there are cross-gender, or shared language features in both male and female languages: hedges, tag questions and questions found in male language features; and commands, directives, swearing and taboo language found in female language features. The results indicate that the use of cross-gender language features can be caused by the social context during the conversation. Those social contexts are social distance, status, formality and functionality.

Abstract

This research explores the moral messages embedded in the animated movie "Luca" by Disney Pixar through a semiotic lens. Literary works, including films, serve as a medium to convey messages that entertain and impart moral values. In a world where reading rates are low, movies become a popular means of storytelling. The study draws on Roland Barthes' semiotic science to analyse signs and symbols within the movie, emphasizing the moral messages they convey. The chosen movie, "Luca," not only garnered critical acclaim and awards but also offers an entertaining narrative with positive messages about coexistence between different beings. The research methodology involves qualitative analysis, specifically descriptive qualitative methods, focusing on scenes and conversations to unveil moral messages. Thomas Lickona's moral education theory complements the analysis, emphasizing the importance of knowing, desiring, and doing good. The findings reveal seven types of moral messages: honesty, a helping attitude, kindness and caring, courage and self-confidence, self-control, teamwork, and hard work. The study contributes to understanding how animated movies, such as "Luca," convey essential moral values. While prior research has explored moral values in movies, this study uniquely integrates semiotics, enriching the understanding of the visual and symbolic elements conveying moral messages. The identified moral messages provide valuable insights for individuals seeking positive behavior models in their daily lives. Future research could expand the dataset and explore additional films to validate and extend these findings.

Abstract

This study delves into the effectiveness of the Clavis Selection and Gradation approach in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Grounded in the theories of Richards (2017) and Faravani & Zeraatpishe (2016), which underscore the significance of grammar selection and gradation, this research employs a mixed-methods approach to address its objectives comprehensively. Two distinct groups of English teacher trainees from Universitas Islam Negeri Mataram are strategically selected for the study, with one group undergoing the Clavis Selection approach. At the same time, the other follows the conventional scheme. Data collection encompasses Pre-Test and Post-Test assessments and open-ended interviews. The assessments cover various grammatical aspects, and both groups receive treatment through five sessions. By integrating quantitative and qualitative data analysis, this study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the Clavis Selection approach's impact on EFL learners, contributing to the field of language education. Pre- and Post-Test assessments, coupled with open-ended interviews, reveal that the Clavis Selection approach significantly improves learners' grammar proficiency compared to conventional methods. This mixed-methods research advances our understanding of grammar instruction and underscores the relevance of systematic selection and gradation in EFL pedagogy.

Abstract

This research examined the instances of code-switching based on the theory of Hammers and Blanc (2003) in Deddy Corbuzier's podcast content with Cinta Laura Keihl on his own YouTube channel. It focuses solely on Deddy Corbuzier's utterance. Consequently, there are two goals of this study. The first objective was to determine the type of code-switching, and the second was to determine the frequency of each type to determine which type of code-switching Deddy Corbuzier uses most frequently. Considering the research's data and objectives, the researcher employed the qualitative descriptive method to conduct this research. The data was deemed qualitative because it consisted of written and spoken words as opposed to numbers. And to analyze the data, the writer uses a sociolinguistics approach. Based on the data findings, Deddy Corbuzier performed code-switching at least 79 times in the collected data: 39 times (49.36%) for intra-sentential switching, 36 times (45.56%) for inter-sentential switching, and 4 times (5.06%) for tag-switching. Thus, it can be seen that intra-sentential switching is the type of code-switching that most often appears, which is 39 times, or 49.36%.

Abstract

The research aims to determine whether metacognitive scaffolding strategy has an effect on improving the English writing skill of making argumentative paragraphs of academic writing and how metacognitive scaffolding strategy can improve the English writing skill of senior high school students at Madrasah Aliyah Mu'allimat Nahdlatul Wathan Anjani. The quantitative research method used was a true experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample was 33 students from the school with 17 students in the experimental class using the metacognitive scaffolding strategy and 16 students in the control class using the conventional strategy, and the study lasted four weeks. The mean pre-test for the experimental class was 48.94 and 50.75 for the control class. Using the paired sample t-test, the mean post-test of the experimental class showed a significant improvement; the mean was 74, or 14 points more than the control class. By using this significant value, the researcher tested the effect size using Cohen’s d test. The experimental class's Cohen's d value was 1.59, indicating that this learning strategy is very effective in improving students' writing, according to Cohen's d table for measuring variable effectiveness. Therefore, the metacognitive scaffolding strategy has an effect on improving writing skills in senior high school students. Furthermore, students showed positive results in their leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving ability.
