Abstract

In societal interactions, language plays a fundamental role, serving crucial purposes. Language activities aim to express specific intentions and objectives. This study aims to examines Ariana Grande's song "I Wish I Hated You" using a stylistic approach, focusing on morphological analysis of free and bound morphemes, including lexical, functional, derivational, and inflectional morphemes, and their relation to the song's theme. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method. The primary data source is the lyrics of the song. The data collection process involved listening to the song, reading the lyrics, and categorizing them based on morpheme types. The research results indicate 74 lexical morphemes, 102 functional morphemes, 3 derivations, and 16 inflections in the song. Dominant morphemes are primarily free morphemes, with functional morphemes being the most prevalent type. This highlights how the selection and arrangement of dominant morphemes shape the song's overall impact and message. The research contributes to appreciate Ariana Grande's song, uncover deeper meanings, and enhance understanding of morpheme types within the lyrics.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify turn-taking strategies in terms of taking turns. The turn-taking strategies involve three basic strategies: taking the turn, holding the turn, and yielding the turn. In this research, the researchers focused on the taking-the-turn strategy. The data source was Piers Morgan's interview with Andrew Tate. Stenström framework was used to analyze the data in this study. The qualitative method is used in this research. In collecting data, this research used the observational method. Meanwhile, the technique of collecting data was a note-taking technique. Furthermore, the researchers used the referential identity method in analyzing data; in presenting the result of the research, the researchers utilized the informal method. The research results show that three types of turn-taking strategies in the data source. They are starting up, taking over, and interrupting. Based on the research, interrupting occurs six times, taking over occurs six times, and starting up occurs three times. Starting up is the lowest type that occurs in this data because the two speakers are good talkers who rarely use fillers. Interrupting is the most common type in this data because the two speakers have high conversational proficiency, demonstrating fluency. The implication of this study is to advance the understanding of turn-taking strategies in a new and unexplored context and highlight the strategic use of language in media discourse.

Abstract

Metaphor is one of the most effective strategies for making literary works more evocative, striking, and beautiful. Metaphor's significance goes beyond literature to cognitive stylistics, which studies the cognitive processes that underpin language use and interpretation. This study aims to explain the types of conceptual metaphors found in the Lonestar song lyrics "I'm Already There" using Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual theory. The research method used in this study is a descriptive-qualitative method. The research results show that there are 7 conceptual metaphors found in Lonestar's song lyrics "I'm Already There". The results revealed that it contains all forms of conceptual metaphors. Structural metaphors were the most common (43%). Followed by ontological metaphors were also popular (43%). While orientational was the least (14%). Thus, both structural and orientational metaphors dominated the lyrics of "I'm Already There" by Lonestar. This use of metaphorical language incorporates both abstract and physical components, setting the song's narrative apart from others. Overall, the use of structural and ontological metaphors in Lonestar's "I'm Already There" highlights their significant impact on the song's lyrical composition.

Abstract

This work aims to provide a detailed account of the moral teachings conveyed in the North Halmahera Talaga Biru Folklore. This method of this study employs qualitative research. The data collection technique employs interviews, audio recordings, and a comprehensive review of relevant literature. On the other hand, analyzing data involves multiple steps, including data reduction, display, verification, and conclusion. The research results reveal two overarching messages: positive and negative. The good messages encompassed in the text are as follows: 1) hope, 2) struggle, 3) sacrifice, 4) loyalty, 5) cooperation, 6) cultural values, 7) patience, 8) friendship, and 9) religious values. On the other hand, the contrasting message conveys a sense of sorrow. Sadness is a negative emotion due to the excessive and unreasonable sadness depicted in the Talaga Biru mythology. The depicted grief revolves around the character Majojaru, who experiences profound sorrow and sheds tears for a continuous duration of three days and three nights, ultimately resulting in their demise. In addition, it is anticipated that this will contribute to the development of theoretical knowledge about the moral themes found in folklore from North Halmahera. Moreover, it can serve as a valuable resource for managing culturally and literarily oriented tourism. Furthermore, this study is anticipated to make a valuable contribution to endeavours aimed at enhancing public consciousness regarding the significance of conserving the adjacent natural environment as a habitat for all global ecosystems.

Abstract

Translation is extremely crucial when communicating information, culture, messages, and so on between two or more people who speak different languages. The problem arises when it comes to translate a fantasy stories or games because the translation technique and ideology are heavily relied on the culture. This research aims to find out the influence of translation technique on ideology in translating the novel “Overlord”. This method of this research is qualitative, and the data collected is used to determine the analytical unit, which is the fantasy novel "Overlord". The unit is then broken into smaller parts, which correspond to the fantasy and gaming terms. Following that, a data sample is drawn from chapters one through five of the novels before removing unneeded and irrelevant data for this study. The data were analyzed based on Mile and Huberman techniques; data condensation, display, verification, and concluding. The findings of this research are the use of 7 translation techniques, which are: discursive creation (60), established equivalent (15), borrowing (184), Amplification (9), literal translation (118), modulation (29), and Particularization (4), and the most used translation technique is borrowing (184) and literal translation (118) in the novel. This means that the translation ideology that is used is foreignization which means that the translation is oriented to the source language culture.

Abstract

The collaborative learning model requires students to play an active role in learning English, where students can share ideas, solve problems, think critically by collaborating to achieve learning goals. The aim of this research is to determine the perceptions of class E undergraduate management study program students regarding the implementation of the collaborative learning model in English language learning. The method used in this research is qualitative with a qualitative descriptive approach. The population in this study were all 40 class E students and sampling in this study was used non-random sampling, purposive sampling technique. 37 students were taken as sample. The instrument used was questionnaire which was distributed on google form. The 37 total respondents who filled out the questionnaire, only 28 respondents. However, the 28 respondents represent students' perceptions of implementing collaborative learning in English language learning. The research results show that students positively perceive implementing the collaborative model in English language learning. The implication of this study is collaborative learning might be implemented for teachers or lecturers in the teaching and learning process with other subjects.

Abstract

The film Joy is a motivational movie that inspires viewers to work hard and achieve their dreams. This research examines the intrinsic motivation of the main character based on the Basic Psychological Needs Theory, which suggests that intrinsic motivation is driven by three core psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The study explores how these needs are reflected in the character’s actions and dialogue. Using a descriptive-qualitative method, the movie script is analyzed as a primary data source, using document analysis techniques. Data were collected through an observation table and interpreted through content analysis. The findings reveal that the protagonist’s intrinsic motivation is primarily fueled by the need for competence, as shown in seven key moments where she strives for mastery. Autonomy is also significant, seen in six instances where the character resists external pressures to assert control over her choices. Relatedness, identified in five moments, provides emotional support that sustains her motivation. These results highlight the importance of competence in driving personal achievement, while autonomy and relatedness offer essential support. The study shows how films like Joy depict psychological needs and suggests that such portrayals can inspire viewers to pursue their own goals by fostering autonomy, competence, and meaningful relationships.

Abstract

This study explores the application of cognitive stylistics in analyzing Ariana Grande’s song "Intro (End of theWorld)" through schema theory. Schema theory is employed to understand how listeners interpret the song’s lyrics by activating pre-existing mental frameworks. The background of this research includes examining rhetorical devices used by the artist, such as personification, similes, metaphors, and hyperbole, to convey complex emotions and ideas. The methodology consists of a detailed textual analysis of the lyrics, focusing on identifying and interpreting these devices concerning the song’s thematic elements. The findings indicate that the song addresses themes of relationship evaluation, self-discovery, and the intricacies of interpersonal connections. The metaphorical language, melodic and lyrical structure, and vocal delivery contribute to the song’s emotional depth and thematic complexity. The study concludes that the use of schema theory helps elucidate how these stylistic elements influence listeners’ understanding and emotional engagement with the song, enhancing their overall experience.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the portrayal of feminine slavery in "Redeeming Love," focusing on understanding the underlying motivations and social pressures that lead Sarah to prostitution. This study explores the social phenomena of women being enslaved as prostitutes and the motivations behind their choices, using the movie "Redeeming Love." The study follows a descriptive qualitative method to examine Sarah’s depiction as a feminine slave and her motivations by employing a context-oriented approach. The research utilizes Simone de Beauvoir’s theory of feminine slavery and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to analyze the experiences of the main character, Sarah. The research process involved several steps: first, closely observing the movie; second, focusing on Sarah’s dialogue and actions to discern her depiction and motivations; third, selecting and interpreting dialogues that reflect the concept of feminine slavery and her reasons for engaging in prostitution. The findings reveal that Sarah’s experiences as a prostitute include both external and internal struggles, which align with Beauvoir’s theory of women’s objectification and devaluation by a patriarchal society. The external experience is how Sarah experiences feminine slavery from societal views. The internal experience reflects how Sarah experiences feminine slavery from her personal views. Additionally, the study shows that Sarah, as the main female character, experiences some unfulfilled needs that push her into prostitution. Sarah’s unfulfilled needs are physiological, psychological, esteem, and love-belonging needs. Her unfulfilled needs are caused by her illegitimate status as a child, her father’s abandonment, her poverty, and her inability to meet basic needs due to combined unfulfilled needs. These unfulfilled needs caused her to live as a prostitute. In conclusion, this study provides new insights into the factors contributing to female enslavement and the needs of women in a patriarchal society, enhancing our understanding of the intersection between women’s objectification and their basic and psychological needs.

Abstract

Expressive speech acts are designed by the speaker so that the utterance is interpreted as an evaluation of the thing mentioned in the utterance. Expressive speech can be praising, thanking, congratulating, criticizing, insinuating, complaining, and blaming. This research aims to interpret expressive speech acts, describe the types of expressive speech acts, and analyze the form of expressive speech acts in Orion and the Dark Movie. The qualitative method was used because this study aimed to determine the types of speech acts, especially expressive ones, found in Orion and the Dark Movie (2024). The researchers analyzed the data using the pragmatic identity method. The analysis found that 21 expressive speech acts were used in the movie. The most frequently used expressive speech acts are complaining 6 times, apologizing 1 time, congratulating 1 time, thanking 5 times, protesting 1 time, greeting 1 time, welcoming 1 time, and complimenting 7 times. The absent ones are the condole, boast, and deplore.
