Abstract

This article explains how project-based learning is being implemented (digital storytelling) to help students in the First Semester in Bumigora University in Mataram at become more proficient speakers. The aims of this research are to find out whether Project-Based Learning (digital storytelling) can improve students’ speaking skill and to analyze the students’ learning motivation when is implemented. A test, questionnaire, interview, and observation were used to gather the data. The researchers used action research and random sampling technique. The method used mix method, quantitative and qualitative. The steps in this design are Planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The study's conclusions showed that students' speaking abilities had improved in a number of areas, including confidence, fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. A range of speaking exercises, such as oral presentations, voice recordings, group discussions, and interviews, helped to strengthen those areas. The study's conclusions showed that pupils' speaking abilities had improved in a number of areas, including confidence, fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Moreover, the mean gain of the students’ post-test was higher than the mean gain of the students’ pre-test. In the pre-test, the mean gain was 56.37; however, the students could achieve 74.05 in the post-test. In addition, students’ learning motivation increased in terms of: students involve in learning process, students solve the problem and search the issue, students try to work harder to avoid the failure. A demanding multimedia-based project in which students generated digital stories might give meaningful experience and increase improvement students’ spoken ability.

Abstract

The need for learning English as a foreign language is rising due to the interconnectedness of today's globe, where English is the universal language of academics, commerce, entertainment, and culture. This has raised interest in the automatic approach to evaluating spoken language competency. In this sense, learning grammar is one of the most important components of language competency. This study aims to analyze the grammatical speaking errors made by the second-year Universitas Bumigora students learning English as a foreign language in the Speaking 3 course. The methodology involves a qualitative research design using the surface strategy taxonomy to analyze and classify the data collected from 20 English literature students. The errors are categorized into omission, addition, disordering, and selection. The types of errors identified include plural and singular nouns, subject-verb agreement, part-of-speech word orders, regular and irregular verb usage, and word order. Data were obtained through two cycles; in the first cycle, the participants receive feedback on their errors, and their insight on the errors is also considered in cycle 2. Data analysis on both cycles reveals that there were significant errors in singular and plural pronoun usage of above 20%; the subject-verb agreement has an increasing percentage of errors (4.16%) after being given feedback on the first cycle; part of speech has significantly lower errors (8.03% and 1.09%); the usage of articles is similar to subject-verb agreement errors, there was slight increasing percentage of errors (1.8% and 0.20%). Thus, the data revealed that learners are significantly influenced by both the interference of their first language and the challenges inherent in acquiring a second language. Therefore, errors in spoken articulation still existed, though learners were able to comprehend the grammar in written text.

Abstract

The study's main purpose is to describe the types of adjective clauses. The method of this study was a descriptive qualitative method that focused on describing the types of adjective clauses. The method of data collection is by using the documentation method. The technique is collecting complex sentences that are found in the novel. There were some steps to do this analysis such as reading several textbooks and articles about English grammar, and seeking and learning information about adjective clauses, definitions, the types of adjective clauses, and then identifying and classifying the data of English adjective clauses in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. Next, the data based on the types of adjective clauses were analyzed and then showed the frequency of types from each act of data in the novel, and finally drawing verification conclusions after finishing the analysis. King and Stanley (1996) describe that types of adjective clauses can be divided into four, they are full adjective clause, reduced adjective clause, marked adjective clause, and unmarked adjective clause. The result shows there were only two types of adjective clauses in the novel, 48 full adjective clauses equal to 98 percent, and 1 reduced adjective clause clauses equal to 2 percent. It is concluded that almost all types of adjective clauses are full adjective clauses in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. It means that the way the writer delivers conversation and narration on the text with full adjective clauses is to make it easier for readers to understand them.

Abstract

Collocations, or word co-occurrences, are typically studied based on written corpus data. In this paper, we used preliminary experimental data to explore the inherent association between a verb and certain nouns. We hypothesized that specific verbs would vary with respect to the nouns the verbs are associated with. To test this hypothesis, we developed an experiment using the Gorilla Experiment Builder to simulate the preference selection of nouns with each verb. The research was done with a sample size of 17 participants and each of them performed 35 trials inside the Gorilla software. The responses were compiled into a set of tables as the basis for generating bar plots, showing the frequency of nouns selected with each verb. The overall results show that the studied verbs have certain preferences towards specific nouns. Even though this research found initial support for the hypothesis, the findings are not conclusive due to the small sample size of participants, being far from the population size initially measured. We discuss a way to corroborate the findings using different methods.

Abstract

Tapis Tuho cloth is one of the Tapis cloths usually worn as traditional Lampung ceremonial clothing. Tapis Tuho cloth is worn by people with high social status. This study aims to analyse the Tapis Tuho cloth semiotically and also to understand the meaning of its motifs and colors. The method of this study was carried out using semiotic analysis theory and qualitative descriptive methods. The novelty of this analysis and research results is that the motifs (Aro tree motif, riding animal motif, dragon motif, sasab motif, swinging crown motif, zig-zag pattern) and colors (red, black, gold) on the Tapis Tuho cloth are not only decorative but have meaning according to the use of the Tapis Tuho cloth used for Lampung traditional ceremonies. The implication of this study is that the Indonesian people, especially the people of Lampung, can better understand the meaning of the motifs and colors on the Tapis Tuho cloth, and preserve the traditional cultural heritage of Lampung, so that it can be passed on from generation to generation, both in terms of the meaning and existence of the cloth.

Abstract

The phenomenon of code-switching nowadays is very often encountered in both direct and indirect communication or on social media. This research aims to analyze code-switching of comments on Instagram and TikTok applications. This study used qualitative as the research methodology, the type of methodology in this study used was content analysis. The data source used is the screenshots results of users’ comments on Instagram and TikTok applications. The researchers watched videos on Instagram and TikTok and read the comment attached in it. Findings after doing the analysis researcher considers there are three kinds of form code-switching that found on Instagram and TikTok account users, they are: tag-switching, intersentential code-switching, and intra-sentential code-switching. Following the type-based analysis, the researcher discovered that there are four reasons why code-switching occurs: shifting the subject, vocabulary deficit, bilingualism/multilingualism, prestige, and trend.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate lexical collocation in English teaching modules. The method of this study was designed as quantitative research. This research was a corpus-based study. The data was collected from an online platform, Platform Merdeka Mengajar (PMM). This study attempted to find answers to the research questions: What are lexical collocations in EFL classrooms? What are the frequencies of lexical collation in EFL classrooms? The researcher was equipped with AntCont to generate a wordlist and frequency and with COHA to do an analysis. The findings show that English teachers lack lexical collocation frequency in their teaching modules. The researcher found that the highest category of verbs and nouns dominated the corpus. The recommendation for EFL teachers is essential to expose lexical collocation in their teaching modules and to contribute to the knowledge mastery of lexical collocation and its application in the classroom context.

Abstract

Online learning is currently one of the lecture models that is widely applied on various campuses. However, learning control raises a problem so a solution is needed to maintain the quality of learning. This study aims to test the effectiveness of textbooks in online learning in morphology courses. The method used is a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods. to assess the feasibility of textbooks, researchers distributed questionnaires to students. statistical test results showed that there is a significant influence between the use of exercise-based textbook with students’ learning outcomes (Sig. = 0.021<0.05) in which class B who used textbooks scored 81.190 or higher than class A who did not use textbooks with a score of 70.727. Students’ response to the textbooks used are 71% good so that the textbook is suitable for use as textbooks. Thus, the use of exercise-based textbook on online learning in morphology courses is very helpful in improving the quality of learning.

Abstract

In the literature field, the investigation of self-identity within cultural and historical contexts offers insights into the life experience and self-belief of the character. This article examines the portrayal of self-identity in An Enola Holmes Mystery: The Case of the Missing Marquess, a book from Nancy Springer’s Enola Holmes series, utilizing post-structuralist literary theory as its theoretical foundation. The article explores how the main character, Enola Holmes, negotiates and navigates her self-identity in a patriarchal Victorian society. It also investigates Enola’s identity construction within traditional gender norms and expectations. This study employed a descriptive methodology to examine the dynamicity of its main characters and plots. Referring to Jacques Derrida’s post-structuralism theory and the concepts of différance, the findings revealed that the fluidity of Enola Holmes’ self-identity challenges the traditional gender roles and binary expectations in the period, which emphasizes the instability of the meaning and self-identity. The primary findings include the character’s fluid identity, such as rejecting traditional gender roles, embracing individuality, affirming independence, and challenging authority figures. The second one is the character’s responses, such as seeking validation, desire for freedom, frustration with double standards, longing for acceptance, and oppression in femininity. The last one is the character’s self-discovery, such as embracing fluid identity and recognizing one’s value of femininity.

Abstract

The background of this research stems from the need for an in-depth understanding of suicide notes, where language is used as evidence in a legal context. Utilization of a forensic stylistics analysis technique is crucial in the assessment of written texts in criminal investigations, with the objective of revealing indications of deception, narrative coherence, and implicit connotations within the text. This research aims to uncover the hidden meanings contained in the language used in suicide note writing. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research methodology to examine suicide notes obtained from the IndiaToday news website using a Google search. The method of data collection entails obtaining, reading, comprehending, and analyzing the suicide notes as major sources of evidence. The results of this study indicated the importance of understanding suicide communication from a pragmatic point of view and that social and psychological elements should be considered in dealing with suffering. With this research, it can be proven that language as evidence can have a major influence on the investigation process; it can show the audience that the words are not just words but words that have the meaning implied in the word.
