Abstract

Mining activities at Tebing Breksi are a vital source of income for the community in Sambirejo village, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. However, these activities have caused several environmental issues, such as lowered pH levels, reduced soil fertility, shallow soil profiles, and water scarcity. Additionally, mining has led to biodiversity loss and land degradation, making post-mining reclamation essential to restore the area's environmental and social functions. This project aimed to enhance the community’s skills in soil analysis and the production of liquid organic fertilizer using effective methods. The activities took place in the Tebing Breksi tourist area, located in Nglengkong, Sambirejo Village, Prambanan District, Sleman Regency. The project included a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), soil fertility analysis using test kits, and the creation of liquid organic fertilizer from household waste. During the FGD, it was discovered that the local community had not received prior training on producing fertilizer from household and organic waste. Until then, they relied on expensive commercial fertilizers to quickly stabilize soil pH. Through this training, the community learned how to perform rapid soil chemical analysis and produce liquid organic fertilizer independently. As a result, they can now apply the fertilizer locally, improving soil conditions and reducing their reliance on costly commercial products.

Abstract

The Abinaya Milenial Youth Farmers Group in Sumber Brantas Village, Bumiaji District, Batu City, faces significant challenges in cultivating Chinese cabbage due to a high incidence of clubroot disease caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, with infection rates reaching 50–80 percent, leading to crop failure. The overuse of synthetic pesticides has resulted in pathogen resistance. Therefore, we adopted an integrated pest management (IPM) approach focusing on long-term prevention by integrating ecologically-based control techniques. The principles of IPM include managing healthy plants, preserving natural enemies, monitoring, and enhancing farmers' ecological understanding to become IPM experts. Through the IPM Farmer Field School (IPM-FFS), we aimed to implement ecological IPM, improve agroecosystem health, and support sustainable agriculture through participatory extension methods. Activities were conducted from June to November 2023 in Sumber Brantas Village, Bumiaji District, Batu City. The activities included surveys, planning, socialization, teaching, training, and follow-up. The IPM-FFS successfully developed standard operating procedures for Chinese cabbage management, increasing farmers' knowledge of IPM by 85 percent. The adoption of IPM reduced the incidence of clubroot disease to 20 percent, increased production by 420 kg, and reduced production costs by IDR 403,000 on an area of 400 m2. Farmers independently produce compost, compost tea, botanical pesticides, mycorrhizae, and fungicides through the IPM-FFS, empowering them in sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

The realization of the full potential of natural resources in each village for the benefit of the local community has been observed as a significant challenge. The national village-owned enterprises program encourages villages to optimize the utilization of their existing natural and human resources with the objective of fostering their economic independence. The program entails the optimization of the national village-owned enterprises program in the tourism sector, specifically in the context of Taman Ndeso. The objective of this community service activity is to provide technological assistance and address the issue of river water filtration as a pool water source. The impetus for this activity is the declining tourism activities at Taman Ndeso due to the presence of turbid water in the pool, which was deemed unsuitable for use. The activity is realized through the construction of a water purification filtration system to produce clean and healthy water.  The antibacterial biopores are applied as filtration technology. This technology is designed to capture bacteria from river water that flow into the pond. This research adopted the direct exploration method, which was divided into a number of stages, including planning and preparation, implementation, evaluation, and reporting. The research outcome manifests into the restoration of the Taman Ndeso water tourism pool, which will be capable of attracting tourists and reviving village income to the maximum extent possible, with the management of the village-owned business entity.

Abstract

This community service program is inspired by indications or trends of religious intolerance among students in Indonesia. We designed this community service as a preventive intervention to enhance the understanding and levels of religious tolerance among junior high school students. The intervention emphasizes the importance of nationalism towards the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (Indonesian: Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia/NKRI) and religious moderation as enhancing factors of religious tolerance. Fifty-eight students of SMPN 10 Kota Malang participated in the pre-test and post-test. Data analysis built upon paired sample t-tests with bootstrapping. The results indicated that, first, general knowledge scores regarding religious tolerance (e.g., the meaning or definition of religious tolerance, positive impacts of religious tolerance) and specific knowledge about forms of religious tolerance were significantly higher at the post-test stage compared to the pre-test. Secondly, the intervention proved effective in enhancing religious tolerance, particularly in terms of interreligious respect and politics, as their scores at the post-test stage were significantly higher compared to the pre-test. The third finding showed that participants positively evaluated the community service activities in terms of their objectives, implementation, and outcomes. Participants also perceived the community service activities as beneficial in fulfilling their need for a better understanding of religious tolerance. Overall, the empirical findings in this community service program imply that inclusivity in society plays a crucial role in enhancing religious tolerance among junior high school students.

Abstract

One of the MSMEs developed Batik as a regional product is Rezti's Batik. Rezti's Batik is located in Ambulu, Jember Regency, about 28.4 km from the University of Jember. Increasing the number of consumer orders has made Rezti's Batik production continue to increase. One of the obstacles faced by Rezti's Batik is the process of making Batik which takes a long time because the drying process still relies on heat from the sun, which takes 4-6 hours. The process can also take longer if the rainy season slows the production process's completion. The solution method is the manufacture of appropriate technology in the form of installing a batik cloth dryer. The batik cloth drying installation implementation at Rezti's Batik is a drying system that utilizes heat from the furnace in the sagging process as a heating medium. The designed dryer consists of a stove as a heat generator which will later be distributed with air from the blower so that the hot air will spread evenly throughout the room.

Abstract

Many secondary school teachers are interested in implementing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning but still need assistance to plan their lessons through the development of SSP (Subject-Specific Pedagogy). STEAM is a learning approach aimed at helping students apply the primary content, practice it in everyday life, and have the skills required in the 21st century. Hence, the Chemistry Education Study Program Society Service Team of UNS, in collaboration with ASEAN STEAM researchers, aimed to improve the abilities of secondary school teachers in developing SSP for STEAM-based learning through this training. This training method was carried out hybrid. The activity began with a STEAM presentation and a workshop the next day. A pretest and post-test were given before and after training. A supervision of making SSP was carried out the following day for two weeks. The participants who worked on five SSP pretest and post-test questions showed a significant result increase in the average score of 0.6—based on a questionnaire filled out by 27 participants, 48.1% and 44.4%, respectively, stated that they had gained complete and very completely new knowledge and skills regarding the implementation of STEAM. As an evaluation, participants also provided suggestions for increasing training and mentoring time when training participants apply the training results at school.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka curriculum (IKM) is inseparable from the student assessment process in learning. Teachers are expected not only to be able to plan and carry out learning, but also to be able to conduct assessments to see the achievement of learning objectives. Teachers who are less optimal in assessing the achievement of learning goals for each student will have a fatal impact on early childhood growth and development. Based on this urgency, the purpose of this activity is that RA teachers have the ability to prepare intracurricular learning assessments on the Merdeka curriculum. The community service method used is the Community Based Research (CBR) method with tools using the Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) technique. Community service activities were carried out by involving Raudhatul Atfhal teachers of DAU District, stakeholders, and a team of experts as resource persons. The results of the activity showed that there was an improvement in the ability of RA teachers in the preparation of intracurricular assessments with an average of 4.0 indicators or in the very good category. The highest average was seen in the teacher's understanding that the summative assessment was used to determine the achievement of child development of 4.5 or as many as 65 participants (100 percent) stated that they strongly agreed and agreed with the statement. On the other hand, the lowest average (3.5) or as many as 28 participants (43.1 percent) teachers have the understanding that the assessment is used to see children's graduation.

Abstract

MSMEs in Hendrosari Village have been struggling with digital marketing due to a lack of expertise in creating compelling visual content, which has led to poor online visibility and stagnating sales. Additionally, these businesses face challenges in keeping up with ever-evolving digital trends, limited access to affordable digital tools, and insufficient training opportunities, further hampering their ability to compete in a growing online marketplace. An extensive photography training program was launched, aimed at equipping 15 MSMEs in Hendrosari Village, the target groups of this service initiative, with essential skills in lighting, composition, and post-processing techniques. This program aims to enhance their visual content creation capabilities, helping them improve their online presence and market competitiveness. The program combined theoretical lessons with hands-on practice, allowing participants to immediately apply what they learned. The community service team conducted observations and interviews before and after the training to assess changes in product photo quality and the impact on sales. The average photo quality assessment score increased from 3 to 4.5. In addition, some participants reported a 15 percent increase in income after learning new photography techniques. Based on the evaluation process, it shows that the photography training has strong potential to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs in Hendrosari village, which can inspire similar programs in other areas.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia and is endemic in nearly all provinces. The mortality rate from DHF continues to rise each year. To address this, health education on dengue fever prevention is essential. One preventive measure involves the use of natural ingredients. Betel leaves, in particular, can kill mosquito larvae due to the toxic substances they contain, which are especially harmful to mosquito larvae. Therefore, community service activities are necessary to raise awareness and provide practical solutions. This activity was conducted in Jetis Village, Sukoharjo, targeting 30 women in the Family Welfare Program (PKK)  from the local community. The implementation included the preparation of pre-tests and post-tests, as well as training sessions. The questionnaire used in this activity assessed participants' skills through a pretest, followed by training in making eucalyptus and betel leaf oil, and concluded with a post-test. The results showed a significant improvement in the participants' skills, with most moving from "moderately competent" to "competent," as indicated by a P-value of 0.001. It can be concluded that the oil-making training effectively improved the skills of the PKK women.
