Abstract

John Dewey once said that “education is not an affair of ‘telling’ and being told, but an active and constructive process.” Accordingly, pedagogical processes should not simply be conducted by traditional lecturing, but rather, they should be constructive processes that gradually build the meaning-making process of the children through their active participation. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest materials that integrate English learning and LSE that are specifically designed for Indonesian children. As a follow-up project from the previous program, the current community service focuses on the implementation of life skills education (LSE) by integrating LSE with English learning in non-formal educational institutions in Malang, East Indonesia with Taman Bacaan Masyarakat (TBM) Wacan as a partner. In doing so, the community service program conducted three phases of activities: planning, implementation, and evaluation in collaboration with Taman Bacaan Masyarakat Wacan and student volunteers. As a result, the community service has mapped out fourteen English materials units, which were embedded into LSE. The units have four major themes, namely, self-awareness and self-esteem, inter- and intrapersonal skill, problem-solving, and time and conflict management. Each of the major themes was then explored, emphasized in units that focused on different purposes and tried to evaluate whether the material fit the children’s context or needed more adjustment. However, due to limited time and resources, only one unit of materials was tried out to identify its usability and its flexibility. Based on the findings, it is recommended that English learning materials can be integrated with LSE to not only improve the children’s performance in using the language but also their broader life skills in this competitive era.

Abstract

Handwashing plays an essential role in overcoming health problems. Washing hands is a straightforward exercise but will not be done if not adequately informed and drilled on it. School-age children are a vulnerable group relative to health problems, but at the same time, is an excellent group to be given appropriate education. Educating school- age children on the importance of washing their hands is critical to improving health behavior. This community-based research aims to increase school-age children’s handwashing knowledge, attitudes, and practices using a game-based educational program. As a result, there are improvements in the handwashing behavior of around a hundred children in Curug Village, Cimanggis Depok, Indonesia, after a twelve- month-long program. This suggests that through appropriate approaches for promoting healthy living behavior to the children, such as a game board, the project can be successful and sustainable.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the benefit of introducing the accounting and finance knowledge for micro and small business enterprises, in particular during the time of the coronavirus disease 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the micro and small enterprises. A large number of industries faced the risk of lower sales, which in turn badly hit their businesses. To assist micro and small business entrepreneurs in maintaining sustainability by improving their bookkeeping skills by using digital applications, a team of lecturers from Universitas Mercu Buana, Indonesia, and Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia, collaborated on socialization activities and interactions. The lecturers held virtual or online workshops for 75 micro and small business entrepreneurs, whose majority of the participants have a high school educational background. The results of this study show influential benefits experienced by the participants, who also stated that the activity and social interaction must be held regularly as a guide and to provide them with updated information. The activities also motivated them to continue working hard to sustain their business. This study demonstrates that such programs can provide support for the sustenance of micro and small businesses.

Abstract

The term alternative media refers to media that serves as alternative sources of information in lieu of mainstream media. In contrast to social media, alternative media are mass media entities that carry out journalistic functions even though they are affiliated with community organizations. Thus, alternative media are expected to provide authentic news just like mainstream media in Muslim countries. Islamic alternative media are also required to produce quality news, and this was especially seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, when a flood of information resulted in confusion among the community. In response, training that aimed to enhance journalistic professionalism for practitioners of Islamic alternative journalism from four alternative media entities was conducted during the pandemic. Entitled Enhancing Professionalism of Muslim Journalists, the training was carried out in a measurable manner using the Assets-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, which consists of five steps, namely discovery, dream, design, define, and destiny. With these five steps, the training resulted in significant changes in how journalist carried out their jobs. These include improvements in their understanding of professional ethics, news writing, and the use of journalistic language. This training also provided an overview of the pattern of reporting in Islamic alternative media, which are platforms that can provide news from a religious perspective.

Abstract

This project focused on the introduction of liquid smoke and bio briquette manufacturing technology to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) located in Bohol Village, Gunungkidul, Indonesia through technology transfer, training, and mentoring. These SMEs are engaged in the food business with the main product jenang ketan, a traditional food from Gunungkidul, especially in Rongkop District, and very popular among communities around and outside Gunungkidul. The traditional preparation of jenang ketan produces several by-products in the form of waste, which is dominated by coconut shell biomass. The project’s technology transfer was carried out through the procurement of a series of pyrolysis reactors, distillation reactors, grinder machines, mixer machines, and briquette press machines for SMEs. Afterwards, the training was performed through teaching and practice of SMEs with a focus on the pyrolysis process, bio-briquette process, distillation, application of liquid smoke and bio-briquette, and marketing techniques. The activity was conducted within a period of one-year; continuous mentoring was carried out for the SMEs through consultation and direct field evaluation. The result of the project revealed an increase in the knowledge of SME personnel in the processing of coconut shells waste to produce liquid smoke and bio-briquette and the capability of SMEs to produce their own liquid smoke and briquette.

Abstract

This study explored the potential of social media for effective mass mobilization and community engagement to attain national development in Nigeria. Premised on the fact that social media have become popular platforms attracting millions of subscribers, the study examined how the opportunities they offer could be harnessed and purposefully deployed to galvanize the citizens to pursue national development causes. This was done against the backdrop of the technological determinism theory that provides the framework for investigating the indispensable role which technology plays in the advancement of a nation’s socio-economic development. The secondary research approach was adopted to carry out the study and studied the 2020 #EndSARS protest (SARS refers to Special Anti-Robbery Squad), a youth uprising that aimed to put an end to all forms of police brutality and systemic injustices in the country. This study examined the nature of digital activism that social media facilitated during the protest and how that translated into real-life activism, thereby galvanizing the youth to actively execute the protest. By considering the challenges of the platforms in this regard such as the possibility of being hijacked and negatively deployed in a counterproductive manner, the study concludes that proper mainstreaming of social media into the community engagement and national development struggle would help engage meaningfully with the citizens and mobilize them to attain socio-economic development in the country. Conclusively, the #EndSARS experience demonstrates that social media portends considerable opportunities to engage citizens positively for national development in Nigeria.

Abstract

This community engagement aims to improve skills in batik design through digital applications. Islamic boarding school or also known as pesantren is Indonesia’s oldest religious educational institution. Along with rapid industry advancements, such a school is expected to follow the development by creating innovations with commercial and representative value. Based on this motivation, a training program on design software and blog-based online publishing tools for beginners is given to the students in Babussalam Pesantren, Jombang Regency, Indonesia. The idea of batik is discussed in this article as a part of the entrepreneurial knowledge and skill at the pesantren, preparing the students for future entrepreneurship. This community project consists of two kinds of training—(1) designing batik with an innovative and contemporary pattern using a software application such as CorelDRAW and (2) designing and commercializing the batik product using free publishing online platforms such as Blogger or Blogspot, as the widely known domain. The participants are 28 high school students aged 16–18 years old, including 14 male and 14 female students. To observe the process of learning, pre- and post-questionnaires were conducted. The results show that 84% and 89% of students have not used CorelDRAW and blog-based media before, respectively. However, after the training, the students show enthusiasm, with 73% expressing interest and 63% wanting to deepen their knowledge of CorelDRAW design. Furthermore, 27% of students show interest in blog design and 37% want to learn further. Hopefully, with this entrepreneurship training, pesantren students are ready and confidently enter the business community.
