Abstract

This paper discusses an educational activity program for the indigenous people of Bajo in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, aiming to improve parenting knowledge among young mothers. It addresses issues related to their identity as indigenous people, their self-esteem, and their way of upbringing of children. The issue of low self-esteem among the Bajo community often leads to adverse effects on their learning motivation, future orientation, and exclusivity, particularly in children. This situation becomes more complicated due to the societal tendency toward child marriage, especially among the Bajo people in Leppe Village. Rumahku Madrasahku (meaning My Home is My School) is a program proposed using an adult learning approach to introduce egalitarian parenting and teach children about self-worth. Departing from Brofensbrenner’s ecological theory, this program highlights the role of the family as a basis for encouraging a positive sense of self-worth in the Bajo children. A series of activities are planned and prepared using Participatory Action Research (PAR), from sharing sessions, lectures, question and answer, reflection, and assignment exercises. The program utilizes the mothers’ knowledge and experience in parenting to be further developed parenting strategies. It provides young mothers with a greater understanding of the self esteem concept, the significance of children’s self esteem, and parenting strategies that can increase children’s self-esteem and enhance their awareness of their roles and responsibilities as mothers and parents. This educational program has only initiated the first phase of providing the young mother with understanding, awareness, and skills that might be required for egalitarian parenting. Even though it is challenging and may take some time, changes in knowledge and attitudes towards parenting can be observed as a result of the program, thus calling for continuous and further systematic assistance in the future.

Abstract

This mixed-methods sequential explanatory study seeks to explain the relationship between community engagement and citizenship competence among tertiary-level students at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas, a public institution of higher learning in Dasmariñas in Cavite, Philippines. Specifically, it seeks to (1) determine students’ level of engagement in various community development activities and their levels of citizenship competence; as well as (2) discuss and analyze the relationship between these two variables. Quantitative surveys were conducted on 331 students, followed by semi- structured interviews and focus group discussions with 30 purposely selected participants to gather follow-up data during the qualitative phases. The survey revealed that tertiary-level students were deeply engaged in various themes of activities, from conflict resolution, environmental sustainability initiatives, economic efficiency efforts, sports and wellness activities, disease prevention programs, food security, and nutrition awareness promotion, and gender equality initiatives. They were moderately involved in disaster risk reduction, literacy enhancement, and innovation and technology activities. Further results indicate a significant relationship between students’ community engagement and citizenship competence, and the more students are engaged in community-based activities, the more they become competent citizens. The students’ values and attitudes and displayed citizenship competence are reflected in the categories of skills, knowledge, and critical understanding. Such positive relations demonstrate how students can foster positive attitudes, learn to value humanitarianism, and help build a sustainable community through community engagement activities.

The analysis of the program’s pre- and post-tests and questionnaires indicates that such programs have enhanced participants’ literacy, skills, and motivation. A small business group was founded in subsequent to the program to launch the business; however, additional support from the local government and company is still required to maintain a supportive atmosphere for new entrepreneurs. Such entrepreneurship training could be an effective way to empower a community and open further opportunities for people in other rural areas.

Abstract

This paper highlights the formulation of dragon fruit waste material for a solid body wash, which arguably contain better substance for skin health. The result of this experiment opens up a possibility to be applied as part of community project, contributing to sustainable environment and healthier lifestyle. Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) is a plant originating from a dry tropical climate with a fairly thick peel that accounts for 30%–35% of the fruit’s total weight. The peel is rarely used or reprocessed and thus often becomes waste. The peel’s polyphenol and other important substances component makes it rich in antioxidants. Owing to these contents, dragon fruit peel is a suitable ingredient for making bath bar soap. In this study, pandan leaf extract was used as an additive as its contents help increase antioxidant levels in solid body wash. This study aimed to determine the best bar soap formulation using dragon fruit peel and pandan leaf extract and the most effective method (FTC versus DPPH), as well as moisture content and pH levels analysis. Results showed that the samples with dragon fruit peels have the highest moisture content, pH, and antioxidant activity. In conclusion, dragon fruit peel can be reused as a supporting ingredient in bar soap. Dragon fruit peel and pandan leaf extract are highly effective for increasing the antioxidant activity and consequently improve the quality of solid body wash.

Abstract

To raise awareness and understanding of maternal and children’s health, a team from Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, Indonesia, conducted a program called Tinggi Cerdas. It is a community development program in Kampung Lio, Depok, West Java. This article evaluates the impacts of activity related to the participant’s awareness and knowledge about maternal and children’s health. The program was developed and conducted as an online program due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, from September to December 2021. The program was developed with four different topics through online communication, equipped with an educational booklet for the mothers and a PrimaKu® application for health workers. Such approaches were employed to provide the community with better health awareness and understanding, as well as an instrument for the health workers to monitor the condition of the participants. Community health workers (CHWs) were given a workshop about the application to help them in raising mothers’ awareness to monitor their children’s growth and development. To examine the impacts of the program, pre- and post-tests were used to evaluate the impact on the participants’ knowledge—the mothers’ and CHWs’. The result of the program’s assessment suggests that mothers’ knowledge and awareness about children’s and maternal health are improved, particularly when the application was also utilized by the CHWs in Kampung Lio. The participants are satisfied with the program, implying the program should be repeated. Despite the limitations, health education for mothers and CHWs could be carried out successfully. Insights and reflections are provided in this study to encourage readers to develop a more effective program in the future.
