Abstract

This article discusses a community engagement program that supports housewives as financial managers in difficult times, like COVID-19 Pandemic. This paper believes in the capacity of housewives, particularly in managing the financial conditions of the domestic. The pandemic conditions affect the world in multiple aspects and levels. Physical distancing as one of the policies applied had a wide impact, especially in the economic sector, globally and locally. The temporary shutdown of various business sectors has impacted the society, starting with a decrease in the family’s income, continuing with the difficulties to meet their needs, and eventually their welfare. This article studies the implementation of a community project in Sinduadi Village, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, focusing on family financial planning (FFP), which arguably can assist housewives to manage their finances during challenging periods. Starting from compiling materials for the introduction of the FFP application, the program was conducted through a series of training and discussion activities, setting forum for obtaining assistance from financial management experts. After the training, several domestic financial problems can be identified by the housewives, which help them to outline their priorities and thus make a better financial plan for the future.

Abstract

This paper explores the idea of context as the basis for developing creative workshops for children in disaster-stricken communities. We argue that creative learning should not be seen merely in terms of artistic expression and abstract thinking. Instead, it should become a platform for celebrating local contexts and cultures through the learning process. This study was based on reflecting on two creative workshop activities that were held in post-disaster schools in Cianjur, West Java. The school is part of the Sekolah Indonesia Cepat Tanggap (SICT) program—a fast-track school construction initiative for communities affected by disasters throughout Indonesia. The creative workshops were conducted to engage and familiarize students with their new school environments and build their sense of ownership of their new schools based on the idea that creative workshops for communities can be informed by the richness of local food, agriculture, local events, and experiences in context. This contextual information was embedded in the workshops, enabling the children to produce creative works that highlighted individual and collective layers of locality. The relationship between the creative media used in the workshops and the context allowed the students to produce works that freely expressed their identities, reflecting their belongingness and roles within society. The students’ work was later exhibited in the schools, enabling them to interactively engage with the school spaces. This article outlines context-based learning strategies that can be used in creative workshops to enable communities to situate and express aspects of their everyday localities.

Abstract

This systematic review, which follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, examines the current state of disaster preparedness in libraries across Southeast Asia. It evaluates existing research using four core emergency preparedness rule elements: risk assessment and planning, the communication plan, policies and procedures, and training and testing. While an initial search identified 488 potential studies, only seven met the strict criteria; these seven studies were from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. This indicates either a significant gap in library readiness or a lack of comprehensive research on the subject. The results show that most libraries, including those that have previously experienced disasters, lack disaster preparedness. Hence, it is essential to make a collective effort to bridge this research gap by creating research opportunities that focus on developing disaster preparedness programs for each country within the region. By utilizing the best practices and knowledge produced by future studies, libraries in Southeast Asia can enhance their resilience and preparedness to effectively reduce the impact of disasters. Ultimately, this will safeguard their valuable resources and enable them to continue providing the best service to their communities.

Abstract

In 2020, COVID-19 forced several communities to isolate, and radio stations stepped up as leaders in communication and media during the pandemic, especially in rural communities where internet access is lacking. This study examines the vital role for disseminating information among urban and rural communities and improving services for clients who do not have access to the internet or television news updates. Specifically, this study analyses the demographics of the listeners of Bulawanong Tinubdan (BT) Radio 98.1 FM, a radio station of the Cebu Technological University-Tuburan campus and an affiliate of the Philippine Broadcasting Service (PBS), a government-owned network. It delves into the community perspective of the station’s programs, as BT Radio 98.1 FM endeavors to be an avenue for communication as well as teaching-learning platform during unexpected lifestyle changes like the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study seeks to ascertain how listeners perceive the role of BT Radio programs in assisting the community in becoming more connected despite these constraints. The results show that the station captures the majority of the younger audiences in the community, while also highlighting how a campus-based FM radio station promotes community awareness across different age groups. This strengthens the position of the radio program as a learning environment that is widely accessible and that promotes information in the community.

Abstract

The role of higher educational institutions (HEI) in securing a sustainable future for all is not only limited to quality instruction but also includes development-focused research and need-based extension services. Pursuant to national and international commitment and policies, these three fundamental functions of HEIs are mandated to be aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to intensify their roles in knowledge creation and commercialization while protecting the planet. The City of Dasmariñas, through the Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas (KLD) as its locally funded HEI, has taken initial steps to strengthen its sustainable governance through competitive research initiatives and extension programs. Using an exploratory research design, the sustainability efforts initiated by this locally funded HEI were revisited and analyzed. The responses of faculty members, parents, students, policymakers, local government officials, scientific communities, and other stakeholders from various qualitative data collection methods were carefully examined. A series of sustainability planning workshops was then conducted. The results revealed that all research and extension activities of KLD hinged on the localized SDGs. The participants highlighted the importance of internal and external funding in sustaining a strong commitment to research and extension. The competitive incentive system and numerous partnerships with other organizations and institutions were also considered enablers for the institution to create projects that would bring positive effects to the local community. The results were used to develop a sustainability-informed research and extension framework containing a research agenda, institutional actors, sustainability metrics, scope of effects, priority areas, core characteristics and principles, and enabling mechanisms.

Abstract

Current waste management practices often lack the reduce, reuse, and recycle principles, leading to negative effects on public health and the environment. Comprehensive and integrated waste management is needed to achieve economic benefits, health for communities, and environmental safety. This study examines community-based sustainable waste management practices in academic institutions, thus bridging the theory-practice gap and providing a significant novelty through its integration of Sharia principles into waste management practices. It focuses on the revitalization of the Sharia-based Waste Bank (BSS) at Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UINSA) in Surabaya, Indonesia, supporting the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and implementing quality waste management. A mixed-methods approach was employed that included surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews to assess the current waste management situation and stakeholders’ perceptions of it, as well as potential strategies for waste bank revitalization. The findings reveal a lack of awareness of and participation in sustainable practices in the campus community. It underscores the importance of integrating awareness, regulatory compliance, and community engagement as innovative approaches to waste management. This study further provides a community-based waste management model through the revitalization of BSS at UINSA, supporting the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and implementing quality waste management. This study contributes to enhancing waste management practices at the UINSA and its surrounding communities while aligning with global sustainability goals.

Abstract

This study addresses the visibility of traditional craft and focuses on developing a strategy to increase its exposure through online marketing platforms. Puspa Rinengga Batik Studio, a small and medium-sized enterprise in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, specializes in creating batik with jangkang motifs. Despite their unique craft, the studio struggled with marketing their products, resulting in an imbalance between production and sales. This study explores a strategy to boost sales by leveraging social media for digital marketing. The approach involves empowering the community through workshops and implementing a sustainability program. As a result of this initiative, the studio successfully utilized social media to showcase its batik products to a broader audience, leading to a triple increase in sales. This study demonstrates that strategizing the visibility of traditional craft means popularizing the craft and improving the welfare of the studio’s members, particularly women, reinforcing the local cultural identity, and preserving batik as a cultural heritage.
