Abstract

Rural entrepreneurship is believed to be one of the most strategic ways to advance community empowerment that can directly lead to national economic development, by optimizing local resources, technology, and digitalization. This article elaborates on the program conducted to support the community’s economy and increase business and digital marketing literacy in Sajang Village, Sembalun, East Lombok. The program consists of bar soap products making workshop that optimizes coffee and copra as the local potential, targeted for people of productive age who are interested in establishing a home-based business. The soap manufacturing process is informed by laboratory research formulas that have been tested and are safe, and the produced soap offers advantages over ordinary soap for both aromatherapy and skin care capacities to overcome acne and remove dead skin cells. The program’s objective is to stimulate the growth of local entrepreneurship and advance the development of authentic regional products as a sustainable income source that will strengthen the local economy. The analysis of the program’s pre- and post-tests and questionnaires indicates that such programs have enhanced participants’ literacy, skills, and motivation. A small business group was founded in subsequent to the program to launch the business; however, additional support from the local government and company is still required to maintain a supportive atmosphere for new entrepreneurs. Such entrepreneurship training could be an effective way to empower a community and open further opportunities for people in other rural areas.

Abstract

Looking through the eyes of the local community is crucial for a successful corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. Within a local context, it is essential to understand the community’s perception and find the possible gaps within such a CSR program. Such assessment can be a way to identify aspects that are considered essential and beneficial by the community. This article presents the assessment of the CSR program of a particular company and its impact perceived by the local community. This study used quantitative research methods and elaborated with qualitative methods to gain a comprehensive overview of the community’s perception of an existing CSR Program conducted by the AIO Company in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. The data was collected through a structured questionnaire to obtain information from 100 respondents in Pacar Keling Village, followed by in-depth interviews. Based on the data, it is found that the community perceived various programs offered by the company with positive and negative insights due to the lack of community involvement during the program planning. Some programs, like food and health-related are well-received. However, some are perceived as unsuitable for the community, suggesting inaccuracies in determining the target recipients of such programs and, thus, limited engagement from the targeted community. Assessing the impact of such a CSR program shows the importance of engaging the local community as a significant stakeholder, fully extending the positive public perceptions, and maintaining the company’s goodwill and ethics.

Abstract

This paper highlights the formulation of dragon fruit waste material for a solid body wash, which arguably contain better substance for skin health. The result of this experiment opens up a possibility to be applied as part of community project, contributing to sustainable environment and healthier lifestyle. Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) is a plant originating from a dry tropical climate with a fairly thick peel that accounts for 30%–35% of the fruit’s total weight. The peel is rarely used or reprocessed and thus often becomes waste. The peel’s polyphenol and other important substances component makes it rich in antioxidants. Owing to these contents, dragon fruit peel is a suitable ingredient for making bath bar soap. In this study, pandan leaf extract was used as an additive as its contents help increase antioxidant levels in solid body wash. This study aimed to determine the best bar soap formulation using dragon fruit peel and pandan leaf extract and the most effective method (FTC versus DPPH), as well as moisture content and pH levels analysis. Results showed that the samples with dragon fruit peels have the highest moisture content, pH, and antioxidant activity. In conclusion, dragon fruit peel can be reused as a supporting ingredient in bar soap. Dragon fruit peel and pandan leaf extract are highly effective for increasing the antioxidant activity and consequently improve the quality of solid body wash.

Abstract

To raise awareness and understanding of maternal and children’s health, a team from Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, Indonesia, conducted a program called Tinggi Cerdas. It is a community development program in Kampung Lio, Depok, West Java. This article evaluates the impacts of activity related to the participant’s awareness and knowledge about maternal and children’s health. The program was developed and conducted as an online program due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, from September to December 2021. The program was developed with four different topics through online communication, equipped with an educational booklet for the mothers and a PrimaKu® application for health workers. Such approaches were employed to provide the community with better health awareness and understanding, as well as an instrument for the health workers to monitor the condition of the participants. Community health workers (CHWs) were given a workshop about the application to help them in raising mothers’ awareness to monitor their children’s growth and development. To examine the impacts of the program, pre- and post-tests were used to evaluate the impact on the participants’ knowledge—the mothers’ and CHWs’. The result of the program’s assessment suggests that mothers’ knowledge and awareness about children’s and maternal health are improved, particularly when the application was also utilized by the CHWs in Kampung Lio. The participants are satisfied with the program, implying the program should be repeated. Despite the limitations, health education for mothers and CHWs could be carried out successfully. Insights and reflections are provided in this study to encourage readers to develop a more effective program in the future.

Abstract

This project focused on the introduction of liquid smoke and bio briquette manufacturing technology to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) located in Bohol Village, Gunungkidul, Indonesia through technology transfer, training, and mentoring. These SMEs are engaged in the food business with the main product jenang ketan, a traditional food from Gunungkidul, especially in Rongkop District, and very popular among communities around and outside Gunungkidul. The traditional preparation of jenang ketan produces several by-products in the form of waste, which is dominated by coconut shell biomass. The project’s technology transfer was carried out through the procurement of a series of pyrolysis reactors, distillation reactors, grinder machines, mixer machines, and briquette press machines for SMEs. Afterwards, the training was performed through teaching and practice of SMEs with a focus on the pyrolysis process, bio-briquette process, distillation, application of liquid smoke and bio-briquette, and marketing techniques. The activity was conducted within a period of one-year; continuous mentoring was carried out for the SMEs through consultation and direct field evaluation. The result of the project revealed an increase in the knowledge of SME personnel in the processing of coconut shells waste to produce liquid smoke and bio-briquette and the capability of SMEs to produce their own liquid smoke and briquette.

Abstract

This community engagement program aimed to improve the innovation of artpreneurs, a combination of artistic qualities with business sense in cultural sectors, overcoming the impact of the disruptive moment, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This program used the Asset-Based Community Development method to explore the needs of the community. The exploration process used an appreciative inquiry approach to determine strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results based on the inquiry from the community. This program was conducted in Ngestiharjo Village, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, as a part of the community service learning program Wiradesa conducted by the students and organized by Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta. The participants were five artpreneurs who were members of the Ngestiharjo art community and own small and medium-sized enterprises. This community engagement program successfully defined the potential resources of the Ngestiharjo artpreneurs. The potential resources are intangible (network, cohesion, experiences, creativity, and quality) and tangible (venue and digital equipment) assets. These potential assets become an important element in developing a program using the Theory of Change (ToC). The results of this community engagement program are expressed in the ToC scheme which could be a guide for the members of the Ngestiharjo art community to improve their capacity to achieve their goals. Despite its limitations, this method of community development is replicable for communities with similar situations, striving toward innovations in maximizing arts and culture.

Abstract

This study explored the potential of social media for effective mass mobilization and community engagement to attain national development in Nigeria. Premised on the fact that social media have become popular platforms attracting millions of subscribers, the study examined how the opportunities they offer could be harnessed and purposefully deployed to galvanize the citizens to pursue national development causes. This was done against the backdrop of the technological determinism theory that provides the framework for investigating the indispensable role which technology plays in the advancement of a nation’s socio-economic development. The secondary research approach was adopted to carry out the study and studied the 2020 #EndSARS protest (SARS refers to Special Anti-Robbery Squad), a youth uprising that aimed to put an end to all forms of police brutality and systemic injustices in the country. This study examined the nature of digital activism that social media facilitated during the protest and how that translated into real-life activism, thereby galvanizing the youth to actively execute the protest. By considering the challenges of the platforms in this regard such as the possibility of being hijacked and negatively deployed in a counterproductive manner, the study concludes that proper mainstreaming of social media into the community engagement and national development struggle would help engage meaningfully with the citizens and mobilize them to attain socio-economic development in the country. Conclusively, the #EndSARS experience demonstrates that social media portends considerable opportunities to engage citizens positively for national development in Nigeria.

Abstract

This community engagement aims to improve skills in batik design through digital applications. Islamic boarding school or also known as pesantren is Indonesia’s oldest religious educational institution. Along with rapid industry advancements, such a school is expected to follow the development by creating innovations with commercial and representative value. Based on this motivation, a training program on design software and blog-based online publishing tools for beginners is given to the students in Babussalam Pesantren, Jombang Regency, Indonesia. The idea of batik is discussed in this article as a part of the entrepreneurial knowledge and skill at the pesantren, preparing the students for future entrepreneurship. This community project consists of two kinds of training—(1) designing batik with an innovative and contemporary pattern using a software application such as CorelDRAW and (2) designing and commercializing the batik product using free publishing online platforms such as Blogger or Blogspot, as the widely known domain. The participants are 28 high school students aged 16–18 years old, including 14 male and 14 female students. To observe the process of learning, pre- and post-questionnaires were conducted. The results show that 84% and 89% of students have not used CorelDRAW and blog-based media before, respectively. However, after the training, the students show enthusiasm, with 73% expressing interest and 63% wanting to deepen their knowledge of CorelDRAW design. Furthermore, 27% of students show interest in blog design and 37% want to learn further. Hopefully, with this entrepreneurship training, pesantren students are ready and confidently enter the business community.
