Abstract

This article explains Soedjatmoko's view on the role of religion, culture and education in human development in Indonesia. The role of religion and culture and education in various changes and challenges of the times can be read from the perspective of individual personal interests and the interests of society. The problem is, in its purpose and method, the two functions are not always compatible and even contradictory. For in achieving personal perfection a religious person can focus his life and practice on a personal and direct relationship with God, and become indifferent to his society. That is why, Soedjatmoko also emphasized the importance of the social function of religion and culture to strengthen belief in relation to the development of education towards the future. In this case, religion, culture and education can mutually enrich the civilization of the Indonesian people as long as the constructive and positive values in them can be utilized for humanity, civility and mutual progress.

Abstract

On April 4, 2018 the Government of the Republic of Indonesia through the Ministry of Industry & Trade launched the 'Making Indonesia 4.0' program as a road map towards industrial competitiveness and industrial transformation. In a step to implementing Making Indonesia 4.0, the Ministry of Industry & Trade of the Republic of Indonesia also launched the Indonesia Industry 4.0 Readiness Index (INDI 4.0). Namely the Index to measure the industry's readiness to transform and a reference to access the industry's readiness to transform itself. In Indonesia, the music industry has also developed towards 4.0, which is still intended for users of music products in Indonesia, namely Karaoke Companies. Namely a company in the tourism and entertainment industry that provides space services, musical instruments and catalogs of various songs. The problem is, the quantity of playback of each song A, B and or C still cannot be controlled properly by the Government, where and only hand over control to music publishers who have licenses and permits from the Government as an institution that controls the circulation of products and works of artists, as a result there is no clear transparency regarding reporting so that the control provided is not optimal. This results in an unequal distribution of profits, so that the profits obtained are still mostly owned by some collectors who are under the auspices of music publishers and often harm the creators of works, as well as musicians, so that they do not get the royalties or remuneration that they receive. and can also harm the Government, where the Government should derive income from taxes in the music industry. However, in reality the Government does not earn significant income from taxes in the music industry because the games from several music publishers tend to play a hidden role in generating profits in the music industry, so that the supporting infrastructure in the recording process and the process of monitoring the distribution and circulation of music products is still not yet available. exist, so that the necessary control is still weak, and provides opportunities for unequal distribution of results to creators, musicians and also the Government by Collectors due to the sale of all performance rights and mechanical rights through entertainment venues and channels.Digital Music Distribution (Music Aggregator) is not transparent and tends to harm the creators of works, musicians and also the Government regarding acceptance.

Abstract

The globalized culture of celebrity is argued to have profound effect on knowledge, power and representation. Celebrity culture as a popular culture promoted through the media influence certain categories of group. The study used quantitative content analysis to examine the portrayal of female celebrities in the Daily Trust and The Nation newspapers. The study used purposive sampling technique to select the newspaper, and stratified sampling by days of the week to select the editions. The study used framing theory to examine the coverage and portrayal of female celebrities in the two selected newspapers. The findings suggest that the media should be cognizant of the harmful and erroneous impressions that can result from portraying female celebrities in terms of their attributes rather than their professional accomplishment. The study concludes that issues concerning Nigerian female celebrity are seriously lacking both inequality and quantity. Despite the active involvement of females in the entertainment industry, they are still being fitted and portrayed in negatively stereotypic ways. The relationship between the media and the society is a symbiotic one - the media feeds ‘from’ and ‘into’ the society hence, whatever the media portrays as ‘normal’ and prominent is what the society sees as so. Therefore, there is an urgent need to improve the representation of women in the media by increasing the quality and quantity of news stories about women.

Abstract

All over the world, hate speech represents a form of threat to damage the lives of individuals and increase the sense of fear in entire communities. Scholars have aligned with the description that it is a globally-endorsed paradigm that the press as an important institution in the democratic process plays a key role during elections. As the Fourth Estate of the Realm, the press provides the platform for narratives and discourses in the service of elections, political negotiations, and other features of the contestations among politicians and other civil organisations involved in election administration. However, problems associated with election reporting and media role in political contestations and machinations, particularly on the African continent, have been a recurrent clog in the wheel of politics in Africa. For instance, in Nigeria, since the 1950s up to the early 1980s, spiraling into the Fourth Republic that started in 1999 and beyond, several election problems that were rooted in perceived mishandling of the electoral process by the media has occurred in the country. The 1965 parliamentary and 1983 general elections were faced by conflicts with accompanying widespread violence, which resulted in military interventions. Within this context, the study adopts an interpretative phenomenological analysis with editors of Daily Trust, The Nation, and The Guardian newspapers in relation to the reportage of the 2015 and 2019 general elections in Nigeria. The theoretical tenets of Critical Race Theory serve the study goal. Nine Editors were purposively selected for an in-depth interview. Arising from the interview, the study discovered that there are implications of hate speech on the professional journalistic practice as it undermines the ethics of the journalism profession. The study recommends that as gatekeepers of the content, editors should engage in checking and cross-checking of facts as a guiding principle in the professional journalistic practice in Nigeria.
