Abstract

Character education has been promoted by the Ministry of National Education of Indonesia for a long time. Every party, especially, every school is called to implement and grow the character education amongst students. Learning activities have been driven to the establishment of the character. However, an evaluation on character education that were taught has never been carried out yet. Therefore, it is necessary to find out how national examination questions represent the character education. This study aimed to describe the character education in Indonesian language national examination. Data containing words, phrases and sentences were collected from Indonesian language national examination questions of 2019. The method used to collect the data was the qualitative method through observation and note-taking. The research findings revealed that there were 14 leadership characters found in the Indonesian language national examination questions of 2019. They were friendly/ communicative, caring for the environment, creative, curios, social care, hard work, nationalism, respect for achievement, democratic, loving homeland, peace

Abstract

The choice of words and forms of advertisements on billboards or name boards is intended to be  able to attract people's attention. Billboards or signboard makers make it creatively. However, the use of the advertisement language tends to make mistakes. This study aims to describe the errors in Indonesian on billboards and name boards on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman Palembang. Qualitative descriptive research method with data sources in the form of 27 shop signboards and 3 billboards. The data analysis technique used the intralingual matching method. The results of the study concluded: 1) language writing errors on shop signboards are categorized into logical syntax of sentences, writing of abbreviations, use of punctuation marks, writing foreign languages, conjunctions, writing numeric units, composition of phrases, and foreign language structure (MD) and 2) language writing errors on billboards are categorized as using foreign languages and writing websites. Such mistakes are in writing the words Jl. ”,“No”,“Fa.”, “PT.”, And “PD.”, Which should be written as“ Jln ”, “No.”, “Fa”, “PT” , and "PD".

Abstract

Subordinate nominal phrases are a collection or consist of two or more words whose two elements are not equal. Some have a position as the superior element or core of the phrase, and who have a position as subordinate elements or are referred to as additional explanatory phrases. This article aims to find out the subordinative nominal phrase contained in the Suara.com news text entitled "Not All Healthy, Vegetables of This Type Precisely Trigger High Blood Pressure" edition of September 24, 2020, according to the composition. The method used in writing this article is qualitative data analysis method by searching, finding and classifying each subordinative nominal phrasing contained in the Suara.com news text entitled "Not All Healthy, Vegetables of This Type Precisely Trigger High Blood Pressure" edition of September 24, 2020. The result obtained from this research is the discovery of subordinate nominal phrases in accordance with their respective arrangements. With this research is expected to help the community, especially students to be able to understand and be able to make subordinative nominal phrases in news text sentences or not in the learning of Indonesian language and the world of literacy.

Abstract

ideology on the novel Mangalua by Idris Pasaribu. The study uses qualitative descriptive methods with literary sociology. The data-gathering technique involves document and interview analysis while data analysis employs hermeneutical qualitative methods. Research has shown that it is based on cultural, historical, and socialism. From the author's biographical analysis, the maternal Idris Pasaribu has distinctive status and distinctive status. From intrinsic elements lies the theme of the Toba people's struggle for unity of groups and territory. It is this theme that maintains the intertwining of events by involving the main character, the subordinate character, the plot, and the commission. While the analysis of authors' ideologies based on the author's social ideology and the cultural background of the author is that belief, culture, the work that pervcts the author's life has contributed to the novel. Thus the stories of love, struggle, pride, culture, religion, political history were woven together in a way wrapped up in fiction reflected in the Mangalua novel by Idris Pasaribu.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to see the meaning of the Covid-19 vaccine rejection advertisement or banner on social media on the @Indonesian_flatearth_society account. The method used in this research was qualitative method. The method to analyze using semiotic analysis of verbal and visual communication by Kress van Leeuwen. The analytical technique used in this research was reading image. The source of this research data was taken from the Covid-19 vaccine rejection campaign advertisement on Instagram social media "Indonesian_flatearth_sociaty". The data for this research were advertisement images or banners for the rejection of the Covid-19 vaccine on social media on the @Indonesian_flatearth_society account which was uploaded on December 10, 2020 and June 14, 2021. The results of the discussion of this study were semiotic multimodal studies that can be carried out using reading images technique. Each image have representational and interactive meaning that could be analyzed through Kress and van Leeuwen's 3 systems, namely information value, salience (bulge), and framing (frame). The analysis of the verbs found in each picture is that there are possessive sentences, persuasive sentences, and proverbs.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and examine the causes, forms, and treatment of stuttering experienced by Bertie's character in the film The King's Speech. This study uses a qualitative method by listening to the film The King's Speech and noting important things related to the material to be studied. From the results of the study it was found that Bertie experienced stuttering which was probably caused by the retraining she did as a child, as well as psychological factors because since childhood she had been pressured by many rules in the kingdom. The forms of stuttering experienced are repetition and blocking, and the most dominant form of stuttering is blocking. The treatment that Lionel, the therapist does, is to train the breathing mechanism and instill confidence in Bertie. Although his stuttering did not go away completely, Bertie was able to read speeches to his subjects with proper breathing and pauses.

Abstract

This research intends to clarify the forms of  metaphors, conceptual meaning, and image scheme  that appear in the five English short stories named The Short Story online platform by applying cognitive semantics. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The whole result of this research is illustrated by words. The theory used in analyzing the metaphors is from Saeed (2009). Besides, the theory for investigating the scheme is from Cruse and Croft (2004). The result of this research is 12 metaphors that have been classified based on their categories. First, five data of conventional metaphors with conceptual meaning such as life choice, darkness, noise, nervousness, and old. Second, four data of  systematic metaphors with conceptual meaning such as fearness,  compulsion, fire, and waving. Third, two data of asymmetric metaphors with conceptual meaning such as preparation and persistence. The last, one data of abstraction metaphor with conceptual meaning that is hard working. Those data have 4 image schemes, such as force (restraint, compulsion, and counterforce), existence (space, process, object), identity (matching), and unity/multiplicity (merging).

Abstract

This research aims to discuss social and cultural aspects that are closely related to Indonesian history regarding events of colonialism in the collection of short stories entitled Teh dan Pengkhianat by applying new historicism. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The theory used to analyze the relevance of literary works as social documents is from new historicism, Stephen Greenblatt (1980). Besides, the theory used to investigate colonialist perspectives on indigenous peoples is form orientalism, Edward Said (1935). The results of this research are as follows. First, historical representations are marked by fear, restraint, compulsion, and counterforce of indigenous people in the colonial period before and after 1945. Second, social representation is marked by humanity, preparation, and persistence in dealing with the variola virus that occurred in 1644. Third, cultural representations are marked by the hard work of indigenous people for equal rights in clothing style until transportation. Data that demonstrates hard work is the existence (space, process, and object), identity (matching), and unity/multiplicity (merging) of indigenous peoples and colonialists.
