Abstract

This paper explores the esoteric interpretations of the Qur’an as expounded by ‘Ā‘ishah al-Bā‘ūnīyah, a notable 16th century female Sufi teacher, through her seminal work Al-Muntakhab fī Uṣūl al-Rutab fī ‘Ilm al-Taṣawwuf. Despite her non-mufasir status, ‘Ā‘ishah’s significant influence on Sufism thought is evident, particularly in her adept utilization of Qur’anic verses to fortify various Sufi concepts. This study unveils ‘Ā‘ishah’s thematic methodology in interpreting the Qur’an, demonstrating her reliance on Qur’anic signs and correlation-based approaches. Importantly, her esoteric interpretations align harmoniously with the literal meanings of the verses, adhere to Islamic jurisprudence, and are supported by robust arguments, including hadith and the consensus of classical Muslim scholars. This research underscores the intellectually grounded contributions of ‘Ā‘ishah al-Bā‘ūnīyah to Sufi thought, highlighting the compatibility of esoteric interpretations within the broader Islamic framework.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes the dynamic interpretation and contestation of Islamic moderation (wasatiyah) on social media platforms. Amidst the rapid proliferation of moderation campaigns and diverse posts, the research systematically analyzes content using hashtags like #Islamwasathiyah, #wasathiyah, #moderasiberagama, #moderasi and #ayatayatmoderasi. The findings unveil intricate interpretations of moderation, encompassing both textual and contextual dimensions. Notably, the contested nature of moderation becomes apparent as proponents associate it with human brotherhood, tolerance, and the ideal Muslim attitude, while opponents view it as indicative of an unserious commitment or a half-hearted approach to Islam. These divergent perspectives, influenced by individual backgrounds and educational levels, significantly contribute to the broader discourse on religious moderation narratives within the dynamic discourse of social media.

Abstract

The hadith concerning Hajj al-wada’, being the final utterance of Prophet Muhammad, has garnered significant attention from Hadith scholars, prompting various analyses of both its chain of narrators (sanad) and its content (matn). Focusing particularly on the matn aspect, scholars seek to delve into the deeper meaning embedded within the expressions or verbiage of the hadith, necessitating a thorough linguistic examination. This endeavor has given rise to the field of ma‘āni al-hadith, which centers its inquiry on the semantic nuances inherent within the text, whether textual or contextual. Within this contextual realm, pragmatic aspects take precedence, wherein the matn of the hadith is scrutinized through the lens of speech acts. In this article, we aim to explore the hadith of Hajj al-wada’ through the prism of one such pragmatic linguistic aspect: speech acts. This approach fundamentally analyzes the utterances or expressions -in this case, the matanof hadith hajj al-wada’- in light of the speaker’s and listener’s actions, encompassing locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. Through this investigation, we endeavor to illuminate the deeper layers of meaning embedded within this seminal hadith.

Abstract

One way to understand the Qur’an is through its translation. Therefore, the demand for translated version of the Qur’an within the Muslim community is quite significant. Jamaah Pengajian Surabaya (JPS) endeavors to meet this need by translating the Qur’an into Madurese. This article examines the characteristics, structure and syntax of the Al Qur’an Tarjamah Basa Madura by JPS. By employing a qualitative method and descriptive analysis, this study uncovers several findings. Notably, the Al Qur’an Tarjamah Basa Madura by JPS is translated interpretatively (tafsīrīyah) rather than literally (lafẓīyah), which could facilitate reader’ comprehension of the verses. Furthermore, the translations utilize Latin alphabet letters without diacritical marks to represent Madurese phonetics, with only a few instances marked with two letters. From a structural and syntactical perspective, the translation sometimes adheres to the spelling convention of the Madurese language, while at other times it follows the original structure of the Qur’anic language.

Abstract

The study of the rain phenomenon continues to develop over time, leading to the emergence of coalescence theory, a theory and model that discusses the occurrence of precipitation. This study aimed to reveal the connection between the theory of coalescence and Qur’anic perspectives on rain through the literature research framework to strengthen that al Qur’an has mentioned clearly before this theory was discovered through Qur’anic language miracle (al-i‘jāz al-bayānī) and scientific miracle (al-i‘jāz al-‘ilmī) in rain verses. This research concludes that rain can occur when water vapour in the atmosphere condenses into water drops that are large enough to fall to the Earth’s surface, which is influenced by several factors, including air humidity, air temperature, air pressure, and the presence of freezing nuclei to help the formation of water droplets when all these factors are met then it is the right time for the rain to fall because of the fulfilment of coalescence between particles ideally following coalescence theory. The Qur’an has already signalled through language miracles and scientific miracles in surah al-Nūr verse 43 and al-Rūm verse 48 that there is a correlation between the words yuzjī, saḥāb, riyāḥ and cloud formation, while the words yu’allif, and kisaf correlate with the combination of cloud droplets, and the word rukām correlate with increasing the size of the raindrops.

Abstract

This article captures the variety of presenting hadiths in the form of videos and the functions of the generated content, both from a religious and economic perspective. The research method employed by the author is qualitative, involving direct observation of hadith video content on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. This study focuses on videos that use hadith as content material on social media. The questions raised are how does the media influence the study of hadith in the new media era? Is there a shift in the function of hadith when hadith is packaged in the form of videos and disseminated through social media? The research findings indicate that media has provided an open opportunity for users to disseminate hadiths based on their understanding, granting people the freedom to think without limits when receiving presented hadith content. In the era of new media, hadiths are not only utilized for religious expression but have also entered the realm of economic functions. Nevertheless, the content of hadiths shared on social media often lacks in transforming the text into a more simplified form, leading to a reduction in religious understanding.

Abstract

This article examines the humanistic interpretation of the Qur’an by Abdurrahman Wahid in relation to social issues in Indonesia. Utilizing a sociological approach, the article analyzes six spectra of Wahid’s humanistic interpretations that provide solutions to various discourses surrounding these national challenges. First, it addresses the issue of religious exclusivism as presented in Surah Al-Baqarah [2:256], where Wahid emphasizes the necessity of fostering awareness of religious pluralism. Second, in the discourse on education and moral decadence, Wahid advocates for character education through Surah al-‘Aṣr [103:1-3] and Surah al-Shūrā [42:30]. Third, regarding gender discrimination in the social realm, Wahid interprets Surah al-Nisā’ [4:34] and Surah al-Ḥujurāt [49:13], proposing role equality as a solution. Fourth, in the context of state politics, Wahid discusses the challenges posed by the capitalist system, drawing from Surah al-Nisā’ [4:135] and Surah al-Baqarah [2:282], while advocating for leadership oriented towards social welfare. Fifth, concerning the issue of poverty, Wahid references Surah al-Ḥashr [59:7] to emphasize the importance of community empowerment. Lastly, in addressing the cultural crisis, Wahid refers to Surah al-Ḥajj [22:40] to promote awareness of multiculturalism. Overall, this article argues that in the discourse of Qur’anic interpretation, Abdurrahman Wahid has enriched the contextual reading of the Qur’an by employing a humanistic paradigm tailored to the socio-religious and national contexts he faced.

Abstract

The article examines the Qur’anic concept of martyrdom often linked to jihad as an armed conflict. While the Arabic term is associated with dying in battle, the original Qur’anic meaning is to bear testimony to the truth of Islam, which can be done in many ways. Using content analysis, this study examines modern Indonesian interpretations of the concept of martyrdom by Quraish Shihab, Hamka, and Nawawī al-Bantanī and compares them with the classical commentaries. The research highlights that the idea of military martyrdom is too narrow to give justice to this concept. Early and later sources show a broad range of definitions of “dying in the cause of Allah”. The article argues that understanding the role of the martyr (shahīd) solely in the context of warfare is too narrow an interpretation. A broader interpretation of martyrdom is offered to provide a moderate, relevant perspective for contemporary Indonesian Muslims, suggesting that the concept of shahīd encompasses much more than just the notion of the believer dying in battle.
