Abstract

This article examines the nexus between Sufism and nationalism through the hermeneutical framework of Al-Bayān fī Ma‘rifat Ma‘ān Al-Qur’ān written by Shodiq Hamzah Usman, a pesantren-based scholar from Central Java. The study analyzes how Qur’anic interpretation in Al-Bayān integrates classical exegetical traditions with local vernacular strategies to articulate social-ethical values within the Indonesian context. The research employs a hermeneutical approach by focusing on Shodiq’s incorporation of Javanese vernacular (Latinized Pegon) and the inclusion of rubrics such as faḍīlat al-sūrah, asbāb al-nuzūl, and qiṣṣah. The analysis demonstrates that values of iḥsān (moral excellence), raḥmah (compassion), and tasāmuḥ (tolerance) are transformed from personal-spiritual ethics into socio-political virtues that underpin inclusive civic leadership, solidarity, and structural justice. Notably, Shodiq links the Qur’anic notion of raḥmah to Indonesia’s nationalist struggle, including Soekarno’s liberation of West Irian, which illustrates a unique vernacular nationalism rooted in Sufi ethics. While Al-Bayān successfully vernacularizes Qur’anic values for pesantren audiences, its normative-descriptive style limits engagement with structural issues such as systemic injustice or global discourses on human rights. This study contributes to broader debates on Indonesian Islam, civil Islam, and the role of Sufism in shaping public virtue and national identity.

Abstract

The pandemic has reignited longstanding tensions between science and religion, transforming their once harmonious relationship into an intense conflict. This discord has cast a shadow on the credibility of religion in the midst of the pandemic and the evolution of scientific civilization. This study presents a religious discourse through the Sufi trilogy of ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī, Ibn ‘Arabī, and Achmad Asrori al-Ishaqi. Within this interpretative framework, al-Jīlānī suggests the pandemic symbolizes destiny and human misbehavior consequences. Ibn ‘Arabiī views it as part of the Absolute phenomenon, while al-Ishaqi sees it as a reflection of an unfriendly human-nature relationship. This exploration aims to provide nuanced insights, transcending binary conflicts, and fostering a comprehensive understanding of the challenges posed by the pandemic within the context of science and religion integration.

Abstract

This article analyzes the emerging trends of interpretation on YouTube and their impact on the religious paradigm within Indonesian society. Employing a phenomenological approach that grounds itself in the lived and felt experiences shaping reality, this research identifies three distinct schools of virtual interpretation studies. Firstly, the exclusive textualist school, exemplified by MTA. Secondly, the moderate school, which manifests as a spectrum with two poles: 1) The minimal pole, represented by moderates such as Abdul Somad and Adi Hidayat, who maintain proximity to textualists. 2) The maximum pole, where moderates like Quraish Shihab and Bahauddin Nursalim strike a balance between text and context. Lastly, the revisionist school, embodied by Mun’im Sirry. The implications of these three schools extend to the public paradigm, as followers of the textualist-exclusive school may adopt an exclusive stance, while the liberal revisionist school could potentially encourage permissiveness in society. Conversely, the synthesis of text and context is likely to cultivate a moderate attitude among the audience.

Abstract

This empirical-ethnographic research delves into the burgeoning landscape of social media discussions, particularly focusing on the YouTube channel @FaqihAbdulKodir. Amidst the plethora of content, this channel stands out for its unique exploration of ḥadīth through the lens of qirā’ah mubādalah, attracting a substantial audience and gaining recognition among academics and gender activists. Employing reception theory analysis, this study seeks to synthesize insights from @FaqihAbdulKodir’s exploration of ḥadīth concerning livelihood. The research sheds light on the reception of the prophet’s teachings, unraveling the intricate process of knowledge transmission. The findings reveal a spectrum of internalisations, rooted in the understanding of reciprocity. The research concludes with three distinct types of reception. First, an exegesis reception manifests as a trending interpretation style of living ḥadīth. Second, an aesthetic reception highlights the beauty of Islamic teachings, fostering equality before God, particularly in matters of livelihood. Third, a functional reception emerges, emphasizing mutuality in family income as a cornerstone for household harmony. This study not only contributes to the academic discourse on ḥadīth but also offers insights into the multifaceted impacts of @FaqihAbdulKodir’s channel on individuals’ perceptions and practices in their daily lives.

Abstract

This article delves into the sufistic-philosophical interpretations put forth by Guru Sekumpul, a prominent figure in 20th-century Kalimantan, primarily through his work, Risālah Wasīlah. Employing a historical-philosophical approach, the paper dissects the manifold concepts embedded within the text as follows: First, Guru Sekumpul’s interpretations have a significant connection with the prominent figures and concepts of philosophical sufism. Consequently, Guru Sekumpul’s sufism should not only be confined to the realm of ishārī-akhlaqī-’amalī, but should also be acknowledged as a product of naẓarī-falsafī thought. Second, the positioning of Risālah Wasīlah and Guru Sekumpul’s teachings within the historical framework of Sufism in South Kalimantan signifies an attempt to unify the philosophical sufism that predates ishārī sufism. Third, the polemic surrounding philosophical sufism in Kalimantan is recognized as a specific and temporally limited phenomenon that should not lead to the exclusion of philosophical sufism from the broader discourse. This perspective is particularly significant when considering the pivotal role and historical dominance of philosophical sufism in the 16th century. Fourth, the teachings of philosophical sufism should transcend mere cosmological theory and extend to encompass a deep spiritual engagement aimed at reaching the core of religious experience. This approach advocates for an essentialist, universal, and moderate foundation for religious practices, in order to mitigate the risks of rigid, superficial (suḥṭīyah), excessive (tashaddud), and extreme (ifrāṭ).

Abstract

This paper explores the esoteric interpretations of the Qur’an as expounded by ‘Ā‘ishah al-Bā‘ūnīyah, a notable 16th century female Sufi teacher, through her seminal work Al-Muntakhab fī Uṣūl al-Rutab fī ‘Ilm al-Taṣawwuf. Despite her non-mufasir status, ‘Ā‘ishah’s significant influence on Sufism thought is evident, particularly in her adept utilization of Qur’anic verses to fortify various Sufi concepts. This study unveils ‘Ā‘ishah’s thematic methodology in interpreting the Qur’an, demonstrating her reliance on Qur’anic signs and correlation-based approaches. Importantly, her esoteric interpretations align harmoniously with the literal meanings of the verses, adhere to Islamic jurisprudence, and are supported by robust arguments, including hadith and the consensus of classical Muslim scholars. This research underscores the intellectually grounded contributions of ‘Ā‘ishah al-Bā‘ūnīyah to Sufi thought, highlighting the compatibility of esoteric interpretations within the broader Islamic framework.

Abstract

This paper explores the methods and approaches of intellectual history in the works of Jonathan A.C. Brown on the canonization of prophetic sources. Although his studies have sparked scholarly discussion in the following decades, the existing discussions have yet to involve his entire study of the topic and reconstructing his methods and approaches. This article examines Brown’s works on the canonization of ḥadīth texts to outline the methods and approaches to intellectual history that he applies. The close reading method is implemented in this article against Brown’s publications on the role of al-Dāraquṭnī, the canonization of al-Ṣaḥīḥayn, and al-Sunan by Ibn Mājah. Through the determination of the time and period of canonization and the explanation of the reasons behind the canonical status obtained by al-Ṣaḥīḥayn and al-Sunan li Ibn Mājah, Brown’s study on the canonization of prophetic sources in the Sunni community is a response to two problems left by Ignaz Goldziher. The use of methods and approaches in the field of intellectual history allows Brown to examine sources that are common in traditional hadith science in a new way of reading to determine spatial space, periodization, and the role of several agents from the intellectual community in the historical dynamics of hadith canon formation. Apart from criticism of the use of categories from Biblical canon studies to the phenomenon of hadith literature, Brown’s study shows the possibility of expanding the study beyond issues of source authenticity.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes the dynamic interpretation and contestation of Islamic moderation (wasatiyah) on social media platforms. Amidst the rapid proliferation of moderation campaigns and diverse posts, the research systematically analyzes content using hashtags like #Islamwasathiyah, #wasathiyah, #moderasiberagama, #moderasi and #ayatayatmoderasi. The findings unveil intricate interpretations of moderation, encompassing both textual and contextual dimensions. Notably, the contested nature of moderation becomes apparent as proponents associate it with human brotherhood, tolerance, and the ideal Muslim attitude, while opponents view it as indicative of an unserious commitment or a half-hearted approach to Islam. These divergent perspectives, influenced by individual backgrounds and educational levels, significantly contribute to the broader discourse on religious moderation narratives within the dynamic discourse of social media.

Abstract

The intricacies surrounding the concept of abrogation (naskh) in the Qur’an have spurred considerable scholarly debates. Mahmūd Muḥammad Ṭāhā, an insightful contemporary thinker from Sudan, has significantly contributed to this discourse by presenting a unique perspective. Ṭāhā ‘s viewpoint posits that abrogation is not a definitive annulment of the law but rather a deferment of its application until a more opportune time. This article delves into Ṭāhā‘s novel understanding of abrogation, particularly exploring its implications concerning the implementation of Makkiyah verses and the abrogation of Madaniyah verses. It also examines Ṭāhā‘s concept as an alternative stance to the discourse of abrogation and evaluates its broader impact on Islamic law and legal methodology. Ṭāhā asserts that Makkiyah verses encapsulate the timeless and foundational message of Islam, making them pertinent for application in our pluralistic modern era. The repercussions of this theory are profound, notably influencing Islamic law, particularly in dismantling gender-based discriminatory practices like those found in inheritance laws and witness testimonies. Additionally, it challenges concepts such as dhimmī and jizyah in the context of interactions with non-Muslims. Methodologically, Ṭāhā‘s theory advocates for ijtihad across all cases, even in the presence of existing textual sources.

Abstract

The hadith concerning Hajj al-wada’, being the final utterance of Prophet Muhammad, has garnered significant attention from Hadith scholars, prompting various analyses of both its chain of narrators (sanad) and its content (matn). Focusing particularly on the matn aspect, scholars seek to delve into the deeper meaning embedded within the expressions or verbiage of the hadith, necessitating a thorough linguistic examination. This endeavor has given rise to the field of ma‘āni al-hadith, which centers its inquiry on the semantic nuances inherent within the text, whether textual or contextual. Within this contextual realm, pragmatic aspects take precedence, wherein the matn of the hadith is scrutinized through the lens of speech acts. In this article, we aim to explore the hadith of Hajj al-wada’ through the prism of one such pragmatic linguistic aspect: speech acts. This approach fundamentally analyzes the utterances or expressions -in this case, the matanof hadith hajj al-wada’- in light of the speaker’s and listener’s actions, encompassing locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. Through this investigation, we endeavor to illuminate the deeper layers of meaning embedded within this seminal hadith.
