Abstract

This paper is compiled to address the students’ needs regarding topics and material preferences in learning English also their present difficulties. The incompatibility of the current textbook is indicated by the students’ scores on multiple academic assessments. One of the main factors is that most students did not learn English in Elementary School; hence they only know a few isolated English words. As a result, they struggle to comprehend the full English content. This descriptive-quantitative research extracted the students’ bilingual status, opinions, purposes, and topic preferences from 55 students to develop a more compatible English textbook. As a result, the questionnaire and the interview show that the students want elementary-level material, accessible pronunciation examples, involvement of Bahasa Indonesia, and topics based on local content.

Abstract

Speaking is a productive skill that cannot be learned quickly but through a process requiring time, energy, and effort. To accelerate the development of speaking skills, English learners, such as those in senior high school, frequently participate in learning communities, such as Community of Practice. Several studies related to community of practices have been conducted, which reported teacher learning community and learning with peers. However, there is a scarce discussion on the concept of a Community of Practice for learning English-speaking skills. Therefore, this research investigated whether the English Club supports students’ speaking skills. The research methodology used in this study is Narrative Inquiry. The subjects of the research were the students and the coach. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin. The Researcher employed instruments such as observation checklists and interview guidelines. The findings of the study showed that the English Club at SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin supports students in developing their speaking skills. The English Club is a community of students who actively practice using English for communication. The club supports informal learning, focusing on developing public speaking skills through storytelling, speech, and debate. The club's activities are designed to enhance students' fluency and pronunciation.

Abstract

This research aims to explore in depth the use of learning evaluation using technology, namely Google Site, which seeks to develop and increase student motivation and creativity in carrying out requested evaluations. This study is an intrinsic case study which was theoretically rooted in a unique case. The case raised in this research was the potential use of e-portfolios as an alternative option in evaluating technology-based learning. This study involved one lecturer and three students as research participants who were selected based on certain criteria or by purposive sampling technique. Lecturers were selected based on their experience in implementing e-portfolios to evaluate learning, and the students were participants in the learning. Research data were collected through semi-structured interviews with open questions, direct observation, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The results of this study confirmed the students gave similar opinions stating that e-portfolios could increase their extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. This research only focused on students' opinions regarding the implementation of e-portfolios in increasing their learning motivation. It is hoped that future research can further explore teachers' opinions for more comprehensive results.

Abstract

Reading is a complex activity. Through reading activities, readers have responses like rejection, acceptance, and criticism of what they have read. Therefore, appropriate strategies are needed in reading learning activities for students to facilitate reading comprehension. This study aims to determine significant differences in using KWL and QAR strategies on students' reading comprehension abilities. This study used an experimental method with a post-test-only design. The population in this study were students of class VIII SMPN 5 Banjarmasin. The sampling technique used in this study was using a saturated sampling technique for as many as 261 students. The instrument used was multiple choice questions in the form of a post-test. The data analysis technique in this study was the t-test at a significance level of 5%.The results showed that the student's reading comprehension who were taught by using the KWL strategy was 52.09 lower than those of the students taught by using the QAR strategy of 57.09 with a tcount of 2.251 and a p of 0.025 (p < 0.05 ). The difference in the post-test mean of reading comprehension skills in the KWL strategy group and the QAR strategy group was 5.00. This shows that there is a significant difference in the use of KWL and QAR strategies on the reading comprehension skills of eight grade students at SMPN 5 Banjarmasin.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of interactive digital storytelling apps on vocabulary acquisition among young English learners in Indonesia. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving 60 students aged 8-10 years, divided into an experimental group using digital storytelling apps and a control group using traditional storytelling methods. Over a 6-week intervention period, both groups were assessed using pre- and post-tests to measure their vocabulary acquisition. The results demonstrated that the experimental group showed a significant improvement in vocabulary acquisition, with a 30% increase in post-test scores compared to a 15% increase in the control group. T-test analysis confirmed the statistical significance of the differences in vocabulary acquisition between the groups (p < 0.001). The findings suggest that interactive digital storytelling is effective for enhancing vocabulary acquisition and engagement in young English learners. The study underscores the potential benefits of integrating technology into early language education while addressing practical challenges such as teacher training and access to resources. Future research should explore the long-term impacts and broader applications of digital storytelling in language learning.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to gain a thorough understanding of how the most recent information technology has affected English language learning in the present, as well as to determine what kinds of platforms and applications are thought to be most useful for helping students improve their command of the language. Additionally, a detailed analysis of the English language learning platform's implementation in Muhammadiyah schools in the Metro will be included in this research. A survey design is used in this study as a quantitative research methodology. The participants in this survey research will be drawn from MTs Muhammadiyah Metro, SMP Muhammadiyah Metro, and SMP Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan, three Muhammadiyah secondary schools located in Metro City. Once the pre-survey is completed, samples will be chosen and the methodology will be decided upon by researchers at the schools and madrasas that have been identified as the research population. The result of the study shows that Female research participants make up the majority (90.09%) of the sample, while male subjects make up just 9.01%), according to the findings of the demographic analysis of the study data. The demographic information provided above indicates that there may be gender biases or trends in the research that could affect the analysis's findings or the dynamics of student participation in the use of technology in the classroom. Moreover, the research focus was at a certain grade level or educational unit stage in high school, as the bulk of research subjects (90.08%) were 17 years old.

Abstract

Material is a component of teaching to create a successful teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study is to describe the content of reading material in “Bahasa Inggris” textbook which endorsed by the government, especially the cognitive levels of the questions that follow the reading texts. This study used the qualitative research design. Meanwhile, the qualitative data of the research were cognitive level of questions that followed the reading texts. The researcher also used content analysis which was as one of the techniques used in qualitative research to collect and analyze the data of the textbook. Moreover, the instruments for analyzing cognitive level of questions that followed the reading texts were a checklist proposed by Igbaria (2013) and a guide for deciding the level of the questions based on the cognitive domain of Bloom’s taxonomy. The result showed that cognitive levels of questions that followed the reading texts found that 125 questions (89.9%) which were categorized as lower order thinking skills. Meanwhile, there were 14 (10.07%) questions which were categorized as higher order thinking skills. Thus, the questions which were categorized as Lower-order Thinking Skills (LOTS) were more dominant in the textbook.
