Abstract

This study uses semi-structured and observational interviews as data collection methods to examine the impact of PBL on student learning. Findings suggest that implementing PBL in the English Essay Writing Course has a positive effect on student learning. Research shows that switching from traditional teaching methods to PBL can be very effective for courses with important writing topics, such as English essay writing. This study contributes to the understanding of effective teaching methods in English essay writing courses, demonstrating of the step to write an English Essay and the transformative potential of PBL in improving English students' motivation in writing skills. The suggestion is future researchers can do more research on how students explore their writing skills through essay writing at different kinds of essay.

Abstract

Speaking is a productive skill that cannot be learned quickly but through a process requiring time, energy, and effort. To accelerate the development of speaking skills, English learners, such as those in senior high school, frequently participate in learning communities, such as Community of Practice. Several studies related to community of practices have been conducted, which reported teacher learning community and learning with peers. However, there is a scarce discussion on the concept of a Community of Practice for learning English-speaking skills. Therefore, this research investigated whether the English Club supports students’ speaking skills. The research methodology used in this study is Narrative Inquiry. The subjects of the research were the students and the coach. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin. The Researcher employed instruments such as observation checklists and interview guidelines. The findings of the study showed that the English Club at SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin supports students in developing their speaking skills. The English Club is a community of students who actively practice using English for communication. The club supports informal learning, focusing on developing public speaking skills through storytelling, speech, and debate. The club's activities are designed to enhance students' fluency and pronunciation.

Abstract

This research introduces a practical and innovative model for integrating religious moderation values into English Language Teaching activities. Recognizing the multicultural and diverse nature of language learners, this model aims to bridge the gap between language instruction and the incorporation of religious perspectives, fostering a more inclusive and culturally sensitive language learning environment. Phenomenological research used by the researchers as a research design. Grounded in the principles of CLT, the proposed model provides a framework for designing activities for teaching English that seamlessly integrate religious values, encouraging learners to engage in meaningful and contextually relevant language use. The findings showed that the English lecturers have already instilled the values of religious moderation using various ways. The model of lesson plans highlights the significance of including essential social themes like radicalism and tolerance into English lessons plans for university students. It is conducted by employing various multimedia resources, collaborative activities, and reflective assignments to foster dynamic and interactive learning environments that not only increase language proficiency but also encourage critical thinking skills and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

The importance of exciting learning media cannot be ignored in education. This research aims to develop Android-based learning media to improve fourth-grade elementary school students’ vocabulary mastery. Besides, this also finds out the feasibility and effectiveness of the application. This learning media uses the ADDIE development model, which involves five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research results show that the application developed, called the LEVO App, can significantly improve students’ vocabulary mastery. Trials were carried out at several stages, including one-on-one, small group, and field trials, with student response results. Apart from that, the results of the pre-test and post-test show a significant increase in students’ vocabulary mastery after using this learning media. Validation by media experts and material experts also indicates that this application is very suitable for use as a learning media. Thus, it is hoped that developing Android-based learning media can be an effective and efficient solution for improving elementary school students’ English language skills.Keywords: ADDIE Model, LEVOApp, Vocabulary, Teaching Vocabulary

Abstract

In English, there are four skills which must be mastered, they are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. One of the language skills is writing that important for learners to practice their capability and their understanding, how to send ideas, and how to arrange words well. The objectives of this study were students’ motivation and ability to write narrative text who are taught through web-based learning, the writing motivation and ability of students who are not taught through web-based learning and to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of web-based learning to the students' motivation and ability to write narrative text for tenth-grade students of senior high school. The research was conducted at Muhammadiyah Boarding School in Prambanan Yogyakarta. This study used experimental research with nonrandomized-groups pre-test post-test control group design as the research design. The data were collected by using tests and questionnaires in the form of pre-test and post-test. The result of inferential analysis, showed by the result of the t-test, was found that the value of the ttable (2.001) was lower than the tobtained (3.532). Thus, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. It means that web-based learning had a significant effect on improving students’ writing motivation and ability.

Abstract

However, there were some problems that make human could not express their ideas. They are such as difficult to pronounce the words, low vocabulary, and misunderstanding. The main purpose of this research is to know whether Three-Step Interview Technique effective towards students’ Speaking Ability at eleventh grade of MA Darul A’mal Metro. The population of the research was the students on the eleventh grade in MA Darul A’mal Metro. The sampling technique was random sampling technique. The researcherschose social and science class as the sampling. Based on the result of data analysis, the mean score of post-test in experimental class was13.26 and the mean score of post-test in control class was 12.00. It showed that the students’ post- test score in experimental class was higher than students’ post-test score in control class. The result can be seen from sig. (2-tailed) of the equal variance assumed in the independent sample test table which the sig. (2-tailed) is 0.043. It is lower than α = 0.05 and it means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It showed that there was significant influence of using three-step interview towards students’ speaking ability at the first semester of the eleventh grade of MA Darul A’mal. Abstract

The teaching of reading nowadays is urged to empower students to cope with 21st century literacy challenges and to develop prevailing 21st century. Further, English teachers have to implement interesting and creative materials and strategies to motivate students in learning English. Compared to non-authentic materials, authentic materials seemed more promising to fulfill the demand. The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not the use of authentic materials in the classroom in teaching reading comprehension is effective toward students’ cognitive learning styles. The effect of authentic materials was compared to the non-authentic ones. This study employed a quasi-factorial 2 x 2 design and involved 68 tenth graders SMKN 3 Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Province. The instruments used were reading comprehension posttest and GEFT. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 23.0 to test hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The results showed that authentic materials improved students’ reading comprehension compared to the non-authentic ones. It conforms to the theory of authentic materials and the previous studies indicating authentic material is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. It was further found that there was no significant difference in the reading comprehension between field independent and field dependent students. Based on the results, it can be concluded that using authentic materials is promising alternative materials to help students increase students’ reading comprehension with different cognitive learning styles.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out whether using word square media can improve the vocabulary mastery of the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 3 Metro. In this study, researchers conducted classroom action research (CAR) which was carried out in three cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subjects of this study were 32 students of eleventh grade at SMK Negeri 3 Metro. In collecting data, researchers used pre-test, post-test 1, post-test 2, post-test 3, observing, interview, and questionnaire. The results of the study show that using Word square media can improve stu-dents’ vocabulary mastery at eleventh grade of SMK Negeri 3 Metro, this can be seen in the progress of the pre-test and post-test cycle 1 to cycle 3. the average of pre-test score was 42.31% and the post-test in cycle 1 was 61.37%, the average value in post-test 2 was 75.40% and the average score in cycle 3 was 81.37%. pre-test and post-test cycle 1 to post-test cy-cle 3 there was an increase of 5.97%. it means that the results of the post test have reached indicators of success that can be achieved on the results of this post-test. Students responses in using word square media that have been done can be seen that 93.45% of students gave respones very positive in learning using word square learning media and word square media can be said to be practical and easy to use for students, this can be seen from the enthusiasm of students and their spirits at the first time in using word square media.
