Abstract

The teaching of reading nowadays is urged to empower students to cope with 21st century literacy challenges and to develop prevailing 21st century. Further, English teachers have to implement interesting and creative materials and strategies to motivate students in learning English. Compared to non-authentic materials, authentic materials seemed more promising to fulfill the demand. The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not the use of authentic materials in the classroom in teaching reading comprehension is effective toward students’ cognitive learning styles. The effect of authentic materials was compared to the non-authentic ones. This study employed a quasi-factorial 2 x 2 design and involved 68 tenth graders SMKN 3 Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Province. The instruments used were reading comprehension posttest and GEFT. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 23.0 to test hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The results showed that authentic materials improved students’ reading comprehension compared to the non-authentic ones. It conforms to the theory of authentic materials and the previous studies indicating authentic material is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension. It was further found that there was no significant difference in the reading comprehension between field independent and field dependent students. Based on the results, it can be concluded that using authentic materials is promising alternative materials to help students increase students’ reading comprehension with different cognitive learning styles.

Abstract

This research aims to explore in depth the use of learning evaluation using technology, namely Google Site, which seeks to develop and increase student motivation and creativity in carrying out requested evaluations. This study is an intrinsic case study which was theoretically rooted in a unique case. The case raised in this research was the potential use of e-portfolios as an alternative option in evaluating technology-based learning. This study involved one lecturer and three students as research participants who were selected based on certain criteria or by purposive sampling technique. Lecturers were selected based on their experience in implementing e-portfolios to evaluate learning, and the students were participants in the learning. Research data were collected through semi-structured interviews with open questions, direct observation, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The results of this study confirmed the students gave similar opinions stating that e-portfolios could increase their extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. This research only focused on students' opinions regarding the implementation of e-portfolios in increasing their learning motivation. It is hoped that future research can further explore teachers' opinions for more comprehensive results.

Abstract

This study examines the decline of English education in Indonesia and the need for innovative teaching methods to improve students' English proficiency. Despite Indonesia's low ranking on the English Proficiency Index, the traditional teaching approach remains prevalent, which focuses on grammar and vocabulary. The research by Sudimantara (2021) and highlight the benefits of non-traditional approaches such as incorporating nonverbal components. Lian A.-B (2017) also creates an innovative approach called reading for emotion to help students learn English better without worrying about grammar and vocabulary. The study also shows the importance of poetry and literature in English language learning, as proven by Zeman, A., Milton, F., Smith, A., & Rylance, R. (2015) that poetry precedes prose and it is a knowledge management system in the world. The study employed a research and development design to demonstrate the collaboration of using pedagogy, technology, and CEFR to create innovative learning resources that shift students' mindsets and also build the students’ engagement in learning English. This study offers valuable insights into developing innovative learning resources for English language learning in Indonesia, and further research in this area could lead to more effective teaching methods and improve the English proficiency of Indonesian students.

Abstract

The cultural textbook analysis in this study utilized an English junior high school textbook, which was authored by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The examination of textbook contents holds significant importance, as it has been observed that certain junior high school educators in Indonesia may rely solely on instructional materials without conducting thorough research or considering potential cultural allusions.  In addition to this, the integration of other cultures such as the local or indigenous culture, the target culture, and the global culture within textbooks enables students and educators to acquire knowledge about diverse cultural perspectives alongside the English language. This study seeks to provide an answer to the following query based on the study's Introduction that was just presented: What is the distribution of cultural in the following textbooks? The results show that the three textbooks for grade VII-IX present multicultural integration from the three culture categories. The percentage of cultures in each textbook was not balanced. It can be seen in the first textbook for Grade VII that the source culture was 54%; International culture having 38% and the target culture was 7%. Moreover, the second textbook which is for Grade VIII presented that the international culture was presented more than the other types of culture. The percentage was 60%, which means the global culture played higher than the source culture having 22% and the target culture with only 18%. On the third textbook which is   for Grade IX displayed source culture having 59% which means that the Indonesian culture was presented exhaustively over the international culture, with only 32%, and the target culture was 9%.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to gain a thorough understanding of how the most recent information technology has affected English language learning in the present, as well as to determine what kinds of platforms and applications are thought to be most useful for helping students improve their command of the language. Additionally, a detailed analysis of the English language learning platform's implementation in Muhammadiyah schools in the Metro will be included in this research. A survey design is used in this study as a quantitative research methodology. The participants in this survey research will be drawn from MTs Muhammadiyah Metro, SMP Muhammadiyah Metro, and SMP Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan, three Muhammadiyah secondary schools located in Metro City. Once the pre-survey is completed, samples will be chosen and the methodology will be decided upon by researchers at the schools and madrasas that have been identified as the research population. The result of the study shows that Female research participants make up the majority (90.09%) of the sample, while male subjects make up just 9.01%), according to the findings of the demographic analysis of the study data. The demographic information provided above indicates that there may be gender biases or trends in the research that could affect the analysis's findings or the dynamics of student participation in the use of technology in the classroom. Moreover, the research focus was at a certain grade level or educational unit stage in high school, as the bulk of research subjects (90.08%) were 17 years old.

Abstract

The importance of exciting learning media cannot be ignored in education. This research aims to develop Android-based learning media to improve fourth-grade elementary school students’ vocabulary mastery. Besides, this also finds out the feasibility and effectiveness of the application. This learning media uses the ADDIE development model, which involves five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research results show that the application developed, called the LEVO App, can significantly improve students’ vocabulary mastery. Trials were carried out at several stages, including one-on-one, small group, and field trials, with student response results. Apart from that, the results of the pre-test and post-test show a significant increase in students’ vocabulary mastery after using this learning media. Validation by media experts and material experts also indicates that this application is very suitable for use as a learning media. Thus, it is hoped that developing Android-based learning media can be an effective and efficient solution for improving elementary school students’ English language skills. Keywords: ADDIE Model, LEVOApp, Vocabulary, Teaching Vocabulary
