Technological developments in society are separate space into two forms, real space and virtual space. The two meet each other when either individuals or communities use virtual space. Foucault described space to be three forms: dystopia, utopia, and heterotopia. This article aims to explain Instagram as virtual space that intersects real space, forming other spaces in the process. This article uses the perspective of the sociology of space and place while also using Foucault’s theory of other space. This study used the qualitative research method with a discourse analysis approach. The finding of this article is that there are six heterotopia principles contained in Instagram’s features. The results, Instagram forms other space beyond the activity of uploading photos or videos. Instagram as a real space becomes biased because of heterotopia. Individuals interpret Instagram differently as a place to share. On the contrary, when sharing activities, other individuals may use it for more than just sharing. Instagram has changed its space due to a shift in place use. Instagram can create other spaces besides its original function of uploading photos or videos through the other features on Instagram.

This study examines the role of women in the utilization and management of the Family Hope Program fund and describes the process of gender relations constructed in beneficiary families in Surabaya. This qualitative study has two objectives, namely: (1) identifying the role of women in the utilization and management of Family Hope Program funds in Surabaya; and (2) describing the process of gender relations constructed in the beneficiary families. The results indicate that the role of women in managing Family Hope Program funds in Surabaya remains stagnant. Women benefiting from the fund plays a dual role of working in formal and informal sectors and carrying out domestic functions such as caring for babies, cooking, and the likes. These women do not carry out the role in managing the Family Hope Program fund as they are supposed to, such as managing finances and planning needs and spending. This indicates that men still dominate the role of determining the amount of allocation, whereas women are only executors. In addition, the Family Hope Program still cannot restructure the existing gender relations among the people of Surabaya. The program also does not change the pattern of gender relations in decision making in the household. This can be seen from family planning participation. Women benefiting from the fund are reluctant to use family planning contraception due to the husband’s prohibition.

This paper examines the strategies of Torajan migrants that helped them to adapt to Jayapura City. This study was inspired by Edward Brunner and Suparlan to understand the concept of the dominant culture. This study uses qualitative research methods, collected by observations, interviews, documentation techniques, and through some of the literature on the migration of the Toraja people. The informants in this study is people who had come in the early days to Jayapura City. They were also members of the Toraja Family Association. These studies found out that the migrants tended to follow the dominant culture, dominated the dominant culture, and created the rules of the game for all communities to follow. They also have identity symbols, such as the Tongkonan building and the Marampa’ Church in Jayapura City. Hypothetically, these symbols show that they are able to adapt to Jayapura City. This study found that the Torajan migrant community in Jayapura took advantage of a strategy called “adaptive space.†This strategy is carried out through cultural redefinition and by identifying similarities with the dominant culture. They also provide for the common needs in the dominant culture and constructing external relations to adapt in Jayapura City.

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 brings society in fast-paced change. Technology and social media emerge not only as a means of communication and accessibility of modern society, but also as a means of mass news spread and provocation. When society and technology coexist, technology is able to drive people to have accessibility without time limits. The objective of this study is to describe the overview of the Era of Society 5.0 seen from the perspectives of materialism and existentialism in social sciences. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with literature review analysis which specifically discussed modern society and the idea of materialism and existentialism. The results of this study showed that the Era of Society 5.0 has indeed become an era of the unification of humans and technology. Technology has become a necessity that must be fulfilled by all people. The perspectives of materialism and existentialism view it as a critical period because society is vulnerable to division if it is not directed properly. This study concluded that the Era of Society 5.0 is described as a period when humans and their mindsets are trapped between material needs and the desire for existence. Technology that is interconnected and accessed without limits presents a complex situation. The streams of materialism and existentialism provide an overview of the situation of society in two related sides.
