Abstract

Since 1967, foreign investment in Indonesia has led to the westernization of American culture among Indonesians. Westernization is a challenge for Indonesian people in terms of preserving their own culture. This study aimed to determine the impact of foreign investment as the beginning of the spread of the westernization of American culture in Indonesia. This study utilized descriptive qualitative methods with an analysis of literature studies that specifically discussed the impact of foreign investment as the beginning of the westernization of American culture in Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that the westernization of American culture occurs because of foreign investment in Indonesia so that Indonesian people adopt some of the culture brought by that country. This study finds that the cultural shift in Indonesian society is caused by the westernization of American culture among the people. This westernization is the result of Indonesia’s opening to foreign investment, which has brought their culture to Indonesia. As a result, cultural assimilation occurs, leading to a cultural shift through westernization, especially in urban communities.

Abstract

Until now, the distribution of Special Schools (SLB) in Indonesia is still considered uneven and does not have adequate quality education or tends to stagnate. This condition is exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which encourages people with disabilities, especially the Teman Dengar and Teman Tuli communities to conduct online learning activities through video and audio. In line with this, this study seeks to provide steps that can be a solution in creating a friendly environment for people with disabilities, especially for the Teman Dengar and Teman Tuli both in the short and long term through the education sector. In explaining this, this study uses a qualitative method with the Van Kaam data analysis method through the interpretation of primary data from interviews which is expanded through secondary data from literature studies. Based on the data obtained, this study found that the stigma from the community who views the disabled group as a group that has lower quality and does not require higher education is an important factor inhibiting the creation of a friendly environment for disabled groups, especially for the Teman Dengar and Teman Tuli in Indonesia. This study concludes that a friendly environment for persons with disabilities is needed, including in the field of education, such as the use of SIBI and BISINDO in the general education curriculum.

Abstract

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in the city of Surabaya is a concern for the community, especially for transvestite in the city of Surabaya. In 2015, there were 933 HIV/AIDS cases recorded. The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of NGOs with local communities in tackling HIV-AIDS and how to access health care for transvestite in their environment. This study uses qualitative analysis methods through literature analysis and in-depth interviews with several representatives from the Surabaya City Transvestite Association (Perwakos). The results of the study show that the widespread stigma against homosexuality in society makes transwomen or transvestite groups experience significant obstacles, especially in obtaining quality health care and services. In addition, the lack of access to the necessary health services is one of the obstacles faced by transvestite groups, even though access to HIV-AIDS treatment for transvestite groups is very much needed. This can be overcome through treatment programs, counseling on the dangers of HIV-AIDS and multi-sectoral coordination between Perwakos, USAID and community groups. Cooperation with various parties is expected in advancing shared health priorities. This includes supporting the vision of the Government of Indonesia in realizing an effective and efficient national health service program.

Abstract

Parents play an important role in their children’s identity development, especially at the age of 8 to 13. Failure to form this identity will cause a negative impact on their children and others. This study examined Chinese Indonesian parents in constructing national identity and Chinese identity for their children. The approach used was a qualitative method using thematic analysis to analyze the data. This research used 20 participants from Chinese Indonesian parents, aged 30 to 45 years old, who have children aged 8 to 13, living in Surabaya, Indonesia. The results showed that all participants had a national identity; none of them had a transnational identity. However, they did not structurally construct this identity because they felt their children would get that from school. The construction of national identity and Chinese identity could go conjointly without damaging either identity. None of them opposed their children having Chinese identities. They came from two groups: those allowing the construction to occur naturally and those carrying them deliberately. This study concludes emphasized the importance of parents’ active involvement in the process of identity development so that their children could successfully balance themselves between having a national identity and ethnic identity.

This article uses a qualitative method to describe Thomas Kuhn’s scientific revolution affects social change in society. This study is classified as library research with the individual life history approach. This article shows that Kuhn’s thought has been implicated significantly in all scientific disciplines, including the conflict resolution paradigm. Kuhn’s thoughts can change the community’s perspective or paradigm of conflict resolution models from a security and law approach to local wisdom. In addition, Kuhn’s thoughts have changed the meaning of peace, namely from negative peace to positive peace in people’s lives. This study concluded that one of the important contributions of Kuhn’s thinking of the paradigm shift and scientific revolution is the development of conflict resolution and religious peacebuilding in society.

Abstract

Mount Merapi is located in two administrative regions, namely Central Java and Yogyakarta Special Region. Subsequent to the major eruption in 2010, the Sleman district government of Yogyakarta continued to formulate various policies related to post-disaster regional development. This study aims to explore regional development post-eruption of Merapi in Sleman, Yogyakarta, and formulate strategies that can be applied to the development of disaster-prone areas in Indonesia based on local wisdom. This research is qualitative research, which uses a literature review data collection method. The data were obtained and then processed by using CAQDAS (Computer-assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software)-NVIVO 12 Plusâ„¢ application. The results of this study show that the existence of harmonious local wisdom among residents and the Javanese view of life triggered high optimism to rebuild areas affected by the eruption. Regional development strategies that are based on local wisdom are considered capable of overcoming post-disaster trauma and accelerating regional development. It also supported regional resilience goals that were needed to rebuild the affected areas. Based on the findings of this study, as areas with considerable potential and threat of disaster, Sleman and DIY can be role models for other regions to live in harmony with disasters.
