Abstract

Food-related issues affecting many people have long been a point of concern for nations, including Indonesia. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had signed policies for food resilient policies that were riddled with problems such as land rights misallocation. Therefore, this research is conducted to answer research questions, including the comparison of food estate policies during the SBY and Jokowi, the act of securitization by both governments using food estate policies, and the inclusion of local farmers or people’s interest in the implementation of food estate policy strategies. The descriptive approach explains the impact and insufficiencies of policy implementation in their respective regimes. The comparison technique is called Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), focusing on seeking the most similar out of the most different. The securitization concept is used to define a wide-ranging strategy utilized to reduce food vulnerabilities. This research showcased several differences between each regime’s national food securitization attempts, especially regarding the involvement of military mechanisms in Jokowi’s food estate. This research proved the existence of securitization attempts in each regime’s policy implementation, with problems relating to land access and lack of local farmers’ agencies. Researchers found that this is partially caused by limited government understanding surrounding food security, which only persisted on availability instead of sustainability.

Students tend to shop according to current fashion trends rather than buying as needed. The purpose of the study was to see consumptive behaviour following fashion trends carried out by students of the Faculty of Economics, University of Bengkulu. The theoretical basis of Jean Baudrillard is used to analyze a consumptive society that is no longer bound by morality and adopted habits. The method used is a qualitative method with case studies. In previous studies, the study of consumptive lifestyles was more focused on their consumptive lifestyle and behaviour. However, this study tries to explain the consumptive lifestyle through Baudrillard’s analysis of consumerism which is influenced by social relations and external factors. The results of this study are female students who behave consumptively based on the modern lifestyle. Students no longer buy goods based on the function of the goods themselves. However, it has become part of a habit that serves to demonstrate the ability to own trendy items. As for the factors behind students becoming consumptive of fashion trends, there are two, namely internal factors and external factors.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine how the poor community in the 1001 Malam settlement, Surabaya, live their daily lives. Most settlers coming from villages and settling in cities (urbanization) are forced to become poor people who live under bridge tolls. Qualitative research was used to describe the lives of the settlers where the researchers interviewed 12 research subjects. This study employed the theory of symbolic interactionism proposed by George Herbert Mead, the theory of marginality proposed by Robert Park, and the theory of Stigma proposed by Erving Goffman. The results of this study indicate that settlers have a distinct sense of self and identity compared to residents of Surabaya City in general. Settlers define themselves as poor, uneducated, and without access to resources so they must work on the side to make ends meet. This study concludes that the settlers’ survival strategy is to work as buskers, beggars, scavengers, hawkers, and laborers. These informal jobs make poor communities stigmatized as criminals, poor, uneducated, and slum dwellers.

Abstract

The production of space in rural areas as a result of modernization changes lifestyles not only within families but also at a broader level, namely between communities. This study aimed to examine how spatial reproduction occurs in villages in Madiun Regency by identifying the dominant agent and the stages of the process of spatial reproduction. This study employed qualitative methods. This study found that there are four stages in the spatial reproduction process in Madiun Regency, including outreach, coordination, mutual cooperation, and synergy. These four stages occurred because of the presence of the village head as the initiating agent and Village Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) and the Tourism Awareness Group as organizations that oversee various community activities in the tourism sector. According to the findings of this study, technology has accelerated the process of spatial reproduction, which is reflected in the existence of four regionalizations, including economic, social, housing, and public services. This study concludes that the reproduction of space does not always lead to conflict and social inequality in society. On the contrary, people are able to work together in building shared prosperity with the value of mutual cooperation.

Abstract

In 2022, cases of violence against women and children in East Kalimantan Province increased by 315 cases in just four months. Samarinda City is in first place for cases of violence against women and children in East Kalimantan Province, with 18 victims being students. This study focuses on the experiences and impacts of violence experienced by female students in Samarinda City as victims of violence in dating relationships. This type of research is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. This study employed Michel Foucault’s power relations theory. Data acquisition was carried out through in-depth interviews. The data was then processed using the Creswell method. This study found that patriarchal culture is still extremely strong, making the perpetrators believe that as men, they must be brave and dominant in a dating relationship to be able to maintain power and control over their partners. Victims of dating violence are willing to do whatever their partner requests in the hope that it will make their partner happier and love them more. This study concludes that the impact of violence on victims can take the form of verbal violence, physical violence, or psychological disturbances, requiring victims to seek medical assistance from a psychiatrist to help deal with mental disorders and trauma.

Abstract

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected social and economic sectors and has created new behavior and lifestyles. This article employs a quantitative methodological approach. Through interviews with 274 university students in East Java, Indonesia, the findings suggest that young people’s awareness of health behavior shifted after the spread of COVID-19. Before the pandemic, parents are struggling to have their children consume herbs. Youngsters consider herbs as a traditional lifestyle for the elderly. However, after COVID-19, the results suggest that young people are more supportive of herbal medicine in order to protect themselves from COVID-19. Therefore, it can be argued that COVID-19 pandemic generates a growing awareness for young people to consume herbal medicine, which becomes a new lifestyle and preserves the nation’s centuries-worth wisdom of the local culture.

Abstract

Children who are at risk of dropping out of school are a social problem in the field of education. This study aimed to determine the habitus and labeling of at-risk school dropout children at senior high schools in the Lamongan Regency. The theoretical framework used was the Habitus theory proposed by Pierre Bourdieu and the Labeling theory by George Herbert Mead. This study employed qualitative methods. The informants in this study were high school students or equivalent. This study found that habitus among at-risk school dropout children leads to deviant behavior and labeling. This can encourage children to drop out of school. In addition, fields and capital also do not support children in studying. Children’s problems are also seen in the deviations committed both in the social and educational environment. That is what makes children have a label or nickname in society and their peer environment. This study can be used to inform government policies in the field of education, particularly in dealing with children prone to dropping out of school. In this case, the involvement of schools, teachers, parents, and the community is also essential.

Abstract

The military coup in Myanmar triggered a notorious uprising and subsequent armed conflict, resulting in military forces killing and imprisoning protesters, as well as setting fire to houses. This study employs a qualitative approach and uses James Scott’s survival mechanism theory to analyze the hardships experienced by families in fire-damaged villages in the Sagaing region. Our findings reveal that military forces carried out targeted attacks and burned down houses, particularly in villages that supported the People’s Defense Forces, leading to significant suffering among the local population. Families who were victims of this arson faced a host of challenges, including the loss of their homes and possessions, leaving them to seek shelter in the forest or makeshift tents, as well as food insecurity and a lack of access to medical care. Furthermore, many became unemployed as farming production costs were unaffordable and their children were unable to attend school. We highlight the urgent need for international humanitarian aid to address the dire situation faced by families whose homes were burned down by the military in Sagaing Region, Myanmar.
