Abstract

This This article aims to analyze the leading commodities in the plantation sub-sector and the base sector in North Sumatra Province, examine the structure and growth rate of commodity production within the plantation sub-sector, and assess the contribution of each leading commodity to the economy of North Sumatra Province. The study focuses on the analysis of structure, growth, and economic contribution. Data were collected from the Central Bureau of Statistics and analyzed quantitatively using the Location Quotient (LQ) formula, classical Shift Share Analysis (SSA), and Klassen Typology with the assistance of Microsoft Excel. The findings indicate that palm oil and coffee are base sectors (LQ 1). The plantation sector in North Sumatra is not influenced by national growth (  negative), with some commodities growing faster (  positive) while others grow more slowly ( negative). Only palm oil, cocoa, and tobacco possess a competitive advantage (  positive), while overall production performance is relatively good despite disparities ( varies). Based on the Klassen Typology, palm oil and coffee fall into Quadrant I (advanced and rapidly growing sector), rubber into Quadrant II (advanced but stagnant sector), and coconut, cocoa, sugarcane, tea, and tobacco into Quadrant III (potential for development).

Abstract

Oil palm is a tropical plant that produces the main vegetable oil that is widely cultivated to meet the needs of the food, cosmetics, and energy industries. The purpose of this study was to see the effect of oil palm production and labor on the income of oil palm businesses in Bangun Purba Village using the multiple linear regression method and using 37 samples. The results of this study indicate that oil palm production has a very significant effect on farmers' income, with a t-value of 19.456 and a significance of 0.001, where the higher the production, the greater the income obtained. In addition, labor also contributes to increasing farmers' income, with a t-value of 3.040 and a significance of 0.001, although its effect is smaller than oil palm production. Overall, the results of the F test show that oil palm production and labor simultaneously have a significant effect on farmers' income, with a calculated F value of 25.123 and a significance of 0.001, so that optimizing these two factors is key to improving their welfare. This study concludes that palm oil production and labor have a significant effect on farmers' income, increasing both of which can improve their welfare.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the income level of farmers who apply the chili and tomato intercropping pattern in Sikab Village, and to identify internal and external factors that influence the income of the farm. In addition, this study also evaluates the efficiency of the intercropping pattern in increasing farmer productivity and profits. The study used a survey method, with direct interviews with farmers who apply the chili and tomato intercropping pattern. The sample was selected using the Simple Random Sampling method, with 21 farmers from a total population of 210 heads of families. The results of the analysis of the chili and tomato intercropping farming business in Sikab Village show that this farming system provides quite large benefits for farmers. Based on the calculation results, the average income obtained by farmers reached IDR 53,765,250.00 per hectare in one planting season, with a total cost of IDR 28,054,523.83 per hectare. Thus, the average income obtained by farmers in one planting season is IDR 25,710,726.17 per hectare. This study concludes that chili and tomato intercropping farmers in Sikab Village obtain quite good profits. Production cost efficiency can be increased with more optimal fertilizer and pesticide management, as well as government support in the distribution of agricultural facilities.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the potential advantages of the palm oil plantation sector in North Sumatra Province and evaluate its level of specialization and localization. The study focuses on assessing these aspects to support the sector's optimal development. Data were collected from the Central Bureau of Statistics and other relevant institutions and analyzed using qualitative and quantitative approaches, including Location Quotient (LQ) analysis, Localization Coefficient (α) analysis, and Specialization Coefficient (β) analysis with the aid of Microsoft Excel software. The findings indicate that from 2019 to 2022, palm oil plantations in North Sumatra served as a base sector in terms of land area and production (LQ 1) but have not yet become a primary sector in labor absorption (LQ 1). The localization coefficient (α 1) suggests that palm oil plantations are spread across multiple districts/cities rather than being concentrated in a single area. Additionally, the specialization coefficient (β 1) reveals that no district or city specializes in palm oil plantation management.

Abstract

Indonesia’s plantation commodity exports play a vital role in the national economy. However, global price dynamics and export volume fluctuations reflect uncertainties that require further investigation. This study aims to analyze (1) the trends of export prices and volumes, (2) the relationship between price and export volume, and (3) the effect of price on export volume for four major commodities: Crude Palm Oil (CPO), cocoa, coffee, and rubber during the period 2015–2024. The research uses secondary data, analyzed through descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. The findings show that both price and export volume trends are volatile, with cocoa prices surging sharply in 2024. Pearson correlation results indicate a negative relationship between price and export volume for all commodities, but only CPO shows a statistically significant result (r = -0.917). The regression analysis confirms this, as CPO price significantly influences its export volume (R² = 0.841; p 0.01). Meanwhile, cocoa, coffee, and rubber show no significant price impact. The study concludes that the sensitivity of export volume to price varies by commodity, thus export policy should be tailored to the characteristics of each plantation product.
