Abstract

Complementary feeding is one of the top measures in Nigeria to reduce malnutrition. However, there is consistent evidence of poor practice in Nigeria. This study aims to evaluate how nursing mothers in Nigeria perceive complementary feeding and understand how their perceptions influence their complementary feeding practices. The study involved four sessions of Focus Group Discussions with a total of 31 participants. The findings revealed that mothers introduced complementary feeding early because they believed that breast milk alone was insufficient before the age of 6 months. Some mothers also perceived that non-infant cereals and milk were better than their infant counterparts, claiming that they aid weight gain. Additionally, some healthy foods were avoided due to myths, and local herbs, commonly known as agbo, were given to some children. To ensure that the World Health Organization guidelines on complementary feeding are accepted in Nigeria, policymakers need to target all those involved in caregiving for the child in the Nigerian setting. This includes health workers, mothers, fathers, and grandmothers.

Abstract

Perineal wounds in postpartum mothers can potentially cause infections. The perineal area exposed to lochia and moisture creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth, thus hindering the wound healing process. Infections of perineal wounds can involve various types of bacteria that naturally colonize the skin and genital mucosa. The application of centella asiatica spray gel is one of the non-pharmacological methods for healing perineal wounds in postpartum mothers. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of applying centella asiatica spray gel 3 times a day with a concentration of 25% for 7 days on perineal wound healing and the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in postpartum mothers. This is a True Experimental study with a pretest–posttest control group design. Based on the inclusion criteria of second-degree perineal wounds with sutures were selected using random sampling, 17 participants to receive centella asiatica spray gel and 17 participants received standard dry-clean care. The level of wound healing was measured using the REEDA score. The growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria was measured using a colony counter. REEDA score data were analyzed using the Friedman and Mann-Whitney tests, while Staphylococcus aureus growth was analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. Based on the average decrease in REEDA scores by 1.06, the application of centella asiatica spray gel was effective for perineal wound healing (p=0.000). There was a significant difference in the average growth of S.aureus (p=0.040) in perineal wounds of postpartum mothers, with the intervention group showing an average difference of 6.34. The application of centella asiatica spray gel 3 times a day with a concentration of 25% for 7 days was effective for perineal wound healing and reducing Staphylococcus aureus growth in postpartum mothers.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the diseases that can cause fatal effects to health, especially for pregnant women. Hypertension during pregnancy can cause serious effects such as pre-eclampsia and eclampsia which can threaten the lives of pregnant women and fetuses. The purpose of this study is to determine the input and output variables related to hypertension during pregnancy and used for analysis using Tsukamoto FIS to determine risk factors for hypertension in pregnant women. This study uses input variables in the form of maternal age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), history of hypertension and genetic. Furthermore, it is analyzed using fuzzy logic through the process of fuzzyfication, inference engine and defuzzyfication. The examination of data samples of pregnant women with systolic and diastolic blood pressure categories included in the high category or potentially have hypertension. The Z value (defuzzyfication) shows that the output is in the category of severe hypertension so that the patient needs immediate treatment by medical personnel. The results showed that the risk of a mother having hypertension can be obtained through Tsukamoto FIS in the form of concrete values that can describe risk factors in the form of normal, hypertension and severe hypertension as well as recommended actions related to these risk factors.

Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) represents a leading cause of blindness worldwide, early detection is critical to prevent vision loss. However, traditional screening methods, which rely on human experts, prove to be costly and time-consuming. The systematic review aims to assess the validity of artificial intelligence (AI) as a screening tool for detecting DR among diabetic patients. A systematic literature search was performed of the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and Web of Science. The last date of our search was January 31, 2024. We included all observational studies, including cohort, case–control and cross-sectional studies and evaluated their quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. We included diagnostic test accuracy studies evaluating the use of AI algorithms for DR screening in patients with diabetes. Studies were excluded if they exclusively assessed diagnostic accuracy for DR that did not use AI algorithms as a diagnostic tool and studies with incomplete or inaccessible data. Thirteen studies with sample sizes ranging from 69 to 1378 participants, reported good sensitivity of AI for detecting visually threatening DR (VTDR). The lowest sensitivity was 89.2%, and the highest was 100%. In terms of specificity, Any DR exhibited higher specificity compared to RDR and VTDR, ranging from 80.2% to 100%. The sensitivity and specificity of the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools available for DR screening was considered acceptable, especially in detecting VTDR and Any DR, was regarded as good. These results implied the potential usefulness of these tools for DR screening in settings with limited resources. However, further high-quality comparative studies were deemed necessary to evaluate their effectiveness in real-world clinical settings.
