Abstract

In the COVID-19 pandemic, several policies have been implemented such as the use of masks and social distancing. This has an impact on lifestyle changes such as skincare routines. The aim of this study was to obtain a demographic, behavioral, and perception overview of skincare use before and during the pandemic in medical students. This cross-sectional study was conducted by distributing a Google form questionnaire to FKIK Unika Atma Jaya students from the 2016-2021 intake. The inclusion criteria used were as follows: (1) FKIK Atma Jaya students from the 2016-2021 intake; (2) Students who completed the questionnaire until the end. Medical students demonstrated a high level of skincare knowledge but showed uncertainty regarding product composition and safety aspects. Their behavior indicated a strong focus on appearance and trust in brand quality, though opinions were divided on halal certification. Despite a strong demand for skincare products, makeup usage declined. Most respondents were aware of skincare benefits and potential side effects, but uncertainty arose about ingredients and disinfecting. This study explored the perceptions and behaviors of medical students regarding skincare use before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Health promotion is urgently needed to prevent skin disorders due to skincare.

Abstract

Stigma against individuals with mental health disorders remains a significant barrier to recovery, exacerbating patient conditions, fostering social discrimination, and limiting access to adequate healthcare services. Objective: This study aims to identify effective education-based interventions to reduce societal stigma toward individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) through a literature review. Method: A scoping review was conducted by searching literature in Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest, and Science Direct. Included studies (2019–2024) explored educational interventions to reduce mental health stigma. Excluded were incomplete, duplicate, review, and retracted articles Results: Of the 2,277 identified articles, eight studies met the criteria for further analysis. Findings indicate that educational methods, such as conventional psychoeducation, case studies, problem-based learning (PBL), and contact-based education, effectively reduce stigma against individuals with SMI. All interventions focused on improving mental health knowledge. Educational strategies varied based on target audiences, delivered through offline approaches (lectures, case studies, PBL) and online methods (educational videos). Combining online and offline approaches further enhanced knowledge and attitudes toward individuals with SMI. Conclusions: Several educational strategies have been developed to address stigma, whether through online education, face-to-face offline interactions, contact with individuals with mental illnesses, or a combination of these methods. By implementing the right educational methods, stigma toward individuals with (SMI) can be addressed across various target groups.

Abstract

This case report aims to highlight the significance of ultrasound imaging in the prenatal diagnosis of hygroma colli, a condition often associated with chromosomal abnormalities, particularly Turner Syndrome (45,XO). A 26-year-old primigravid woman at 17 weeks of gestation was referred for further evaluation of a fetal neck mass detected during routine ultrasound. The sonographic findings revealed a symmetrical, non-septated, hypoechoic cystic mass in the posterolateral region of the fetal neck, along with agenesis of one lung lobe. Based on these findings, pregnancy termination was planned and performed using misoprostol and laminaria insertion. The fetus was delivered with a birth weight of 150 g, a length of 14 cm, and Apgar Score 0/0. Postnatal examination confirmed the presence of hygroma colli, consistent with the ultrasound findings. This case reinforces the importance of early ultrasound screening in identifying fetal anomalies and guiding clinical decisions.

Abstract

This case report discusses the risk factors of anencephaly, a severe neural tube defect characterized by the absence of brain tissue and the skull. The study highlights the role of maternal obesity and folic acid deficiency as contributing factors. A 22-year-old woman (G3P0A2H0) at 26-27 weeks of gestation was diagnosed with an anencephalic fetus during an ultrasound examination, showing the ‘frog face’ sign. The patient had a history of two spontaneous abortions, a BMI of 30.4, and no folic acid supplementation. Pregnancy termination was planned and conducted using misoprostol, resulting in the delivery of a stillborn male fetus weighing 1500 g, with Apgar Score 0/0. The findings emphasize the importance of early folic acid supplementation and weight management in preventing neural tube defects. Pregnancy termination remains a viable option due to the poor prognosis associated with anencephaly.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a public health issue in Pekalongan City, particularly among elementary school children. Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN) is a key strategy in DHF control; however, cases are still being reported. This indicates challenges in PSN implementation and factors affecting its success. Objective to analyze the implementation of PSN in elementary schools and identify factors contributing to the persistence of DHF cases among elementary school children in Pekalongan City. A qualitative study with a case study approach was conducted, involving 20 participants. The primary informants included representatives from the Health Office, Education Office, school principals, teachers, and school health officers. Triangulation informants consisted of jumantik (mosquito monitoring) cadres, parents, and students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The data analysis followed a thematic analysis approach. First, all interviews were transcribed verbatim, and field notes from observations were reviewed. The data were then coded systematically to identify patterns and emerging themes. Codes were grouped into broader categories, and themes were refined through an iterative process. Triangulation was conducted by comparing data from different sources to enhance credibility and validity. Finally, findings were interpreted in relation to the study objectives, supported by direct quotes from participants to provide depth and context. PSN implementation in elementary schools in Pekalongan City has been carried out through activities such as draining water containers, covering potential mosquito breeding sites, and monitoring by health officers and school jumantik cadres. However, several challenges remain, including low community awareness of environmental cleanliness, lack of regular supervision in schools, and environmental and climatic factors that support mosquito breeding. Additionally, limited facilities and human resources in schools pose challenges to optimizing the PSN program. The implementation of PSN in elementary schools in Pekalongan City has been conducted but remains suboptimal, leading to the continued occurrence of DHF cases. Increasing community awareness, strengthening routine supervision in schools, and cross-sectoral support are needed to ensure the sustainability of the PSN program and reduce DHF incidence.

Abstract

The problem of stunting in Indonesia is a problem that has become a national concern. Stunting is caused by a lack of macro and micro nutrients. Vitamin D is one of the micronutrients that is important for growth in pediatric patients. Objectives of the studyo determine and examine the relationship between vitamin D and the immune system and prevention of stunting in pediatric patientsMethods: Literature searches were obtained through reference sources from Google Scholar, PubMed, Proquest, EBSCOhost. Inclusion criteria for the literature review were original articles, published in Indonesian and English, and receiving vitamin D therapy. A review of the literature highlights the crucial role of vitamin D in bone metabolism, growth, and immune system regulation, particularly in children. These functions contribute to the prevention of stunting. During pregnancy, vitamin D is essential for immune modulation in the fetus-mother interaction, making it a key regulatory factor. Its non-classical roles include acting as a strong immunomodulator by enhancing antibacterial defenses and regulating T-lymphocytes to reduce inflammation and promote immune tolerance. In the decidua, vitamin D supports innate immunity by enhancing infection response while preventing excessive immune-related inflammation. Current research has explored its potential in reducing the risk of infectious diseases like tuberculosis and in modulating autoimmune conditions. Vitamin D influences immune function beyond its direct role in the primary innate response. Early prevention of stunting requires sufficient intake of both macronutrients and micronutrients. Micronutrients, particularly vitamin D, play a vital role in bone metabolism and contribute to strengthening the body's defense mechanisms, helping to reduce the risk of infectious diseases in children.

Abstract

Prostate cancer is the second most prevalent and fourth largest cause of death for men globally. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, prostate cancer ranks and is the fourth leading cause of death. Molecular studies continue to be conducted to understand the molecular heterogeneity, both genetic and epigenetic, that affects the progression of prostate cancer, one of which is the role of microRNA. This study aims to analyze the expression profile of microRNA-21 associated with the development and aggressiveness of prostate cancer. Comprehensive search into three databases; PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct was performed by authors. The study that best met the inclusion criteria was chosen from among duplicates. The QUADAS-2 (Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies) tool was used to assess the risk of bias before the relevant data were retrieved for analysis. There were eleven studies that included a variety of sample sources, sample size and methods. Although a number of the studies had unclear standard reporting, the research overall quality was acceptable. For the results, Prostate cancer samples showed a significantly higher expression level of miR-21 than controls in ten of the studies, and was linked to cancer aggressiveness. In one study, the expression of miR-21 did not significantly increase, despite the use of extracellular vesicle isolation samples.
