Abstract

This study aims to explore the implementation of furumai, one of the core elements of omotenashi, Japan’s unique hospitality philosophy through an autoethnographic approach. The research focuses on the service practices at Jimgu Restaurant, Enowa Yufuin Hotel, Japan. Data were collected through reflective narratives of the researcher, who had direct experience as an intern, along with supporting documents such as service SOPs, and service behavior observations. The findings reveal that furumai is not merely about visible service actions, but an expression of cultural values such as rei (courtesy), wa (harmony), and kata (ritualized forms). Furumai manifests in subtle attentiveness, anticipation of unspoken needs, and consistent, heartfelt delivery of service. Through autoethnography, the researcher captures the deep cultural meanings embedded in daily service experiences. The study concludes that furumai is a service ethic rooted in empathy, cultural discipline, and professionalism, offering a relational model distinct from the transactional approach common in Western hospitality. This research contributes to a culturally embedded understanding of service quality.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes the stages of grief experienced by Yusuke Kafuku and Misaki Watari in the film Drive My Car. The purpose of this study is to describe the stages of grief experienced by Kafuku and Watari, as well as to identify the factors that differentiate the stages of grief experienced by the two. The theories used in this study are the five stages of grief theory and mise en scène as a supporting framework for analyzing the cinematic elements of the film in depicting the characters' emotions. The method used in this study is qualitative, as the data collected comes from a film consisting of words, sentences, and images. The results of this study found that Yusuke Kafuku experienced all stages of grief but in a non-linear pattern. The stages he went through included denial, anger and depression, which overlapped, bargaining, and acceptance. On the other hand, Misaki Watari only went through two stages of grief, namely depression and acceptance.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the forms of discrimination experienced by people with disabilities as portrayed in the Japanese drama Perfect World, as well as the ways in which the characters responded to such experiences. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected using the observation and note-taking technique. Scenes and dialogues from the drama were analyzed to identify patterns of discriminatory behavior and coping responses. The findings revealed three main types of discrimination: explicit and intentional discrimination, subtle and unconscious discrimination, and structural or organizational discrimination. In response to these forms of discrimination, the characters employed various coping strategies, including problem-focused and emotion-focused coping, as well as open and covert forms of resistance. Among these responses, emotion-focused coping and open resistance were the most frequently used strategies.

Abstract

The use of Japanese particles remains a challenge for students, as they often struggle to distinguish particle functions, determine their correct positions within sentences, and maintain focus during learning activities. Therefore, a word arrangement game was implemented in the learning process. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the word arrangement game in improving students’ mastery of basic Japanese particles. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design involving 62 eleventh-grade students of MAN 2 Pekanbaru, divided into experimental and control classes. The research instruments consisted of pretest and posttest items totaling 30 questions, analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, homogeneity test, independent t-test, and Mann–Whitney U test. The results showed that the experimental class obtained a higher posttest mean score (72.19) than the control class (56.77), with a significance value of 0.001 (<0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that the word arrangement game is effective in enhancing students’ mastery of Japanese particles, although their overall achievement remains in the low category. The particles most frequently used in students’ constructed sentences were wa, o, no, and de.
