Abstract

This article discusses the dialectical communication model between structure and agency in realizing the conversion of Bank Nagari from Conventional Bank to Bank Nagari Syariah. It employs a qualitative research method through interviews and informant triangulation. Communication plays a crucial role in achieving the conversion of Bank Nagari from a conventional model to a Sharia model. The Governor has the opportunity to communicate explicitly and implicitly with regional heads in implementing the conversion process. The dynamics of the relationship between structure and agency also influence different communication patterns depending on specific situations and conditions. The lack of understanding regarding the significance of converting Bank Nagari into a Sharia bank is related to cultural elements, values, beliefs, and individual interests, leading to diverse perspectives. Marsh and Smith's theory emphasizes that the interaction between structure and agency should be seen as entities with variations in terms of culture, values, beliefs, attitudes, behaviours, and interests. The conclusion of this article is the presence of implicit and explicit communication in the conversion of Bank Nagari, the role of Datuk as an opinion leader, and OJK communication with the Governor.

Abstract

Sewer dysfunction during rainfall causes flooding on the streets, occurred in Malang City in March 2023. The incident was captured by a photojournalist and incorporated into a journalistic work. The photo was published on the official Instagram account @jawaposradarmalang of the local mass media, Jawa Pos Radar Malang. The photojournalistic image serves as a visual message containing meanings conveyed through codes or signs. The purpose of research is to understand the representation of the drainage issue depicted in the photojournalism for social criticism. The interpretive paradigm is employed through descriptive writing. The theory utilized is Roland Barthes' semiotics, consisting of its basic framework and derived procedures for analysis. Its denotative meaning is that water is overflowing from the sewer onto the road, allowing someone to swim. Its connotative meaning is that the flooded streets indicate poor absorption and reflect the government's inadequate performance in managing the drainage system, as well as the community's disregard for proper waste disposal. The myth surrounding it is that the drainage system and road sewers are crucial infrastructures supporting urban planning, public health, and economic mobility.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the communication strategy of the Mulok BMR teacher in cultivating the principles of Malay cultural identity. The Mulok subject aims to provide knowledge, skills and behavior to students so that they have solid insight into environmental conditions and community needs in accordance with the values/rules that apply in their region and support the continuity of regional development and national development. Riau Malay Culture (BMR) is included in learning because Malay Culture has become a strong identity in the traditions of society in Riau Province. Therefore, the Riau Provincial government includes Riau Malay Culture as part of education and includes it in the curriculum. The results of this research show that the communication strategies used by teachers during the learning process are: 1) applying Malay language during the learning process 2) Involving Students in Cultural Activities 3) Story Based Learning 4) using visual media. By implementing these communication strategies, teachers can become the main agents in strengthening Malay cultural identity in students. That way, students can take pride in their cultural heritage and apply it in everyday life. This communication strategy can also open the door to a deeper understanding and appreciation of Malay culture.

This research uses a qualitative case study approach with data collection methods through interviews, observation, and document analysis to gain in-depth understanding. The results showed that Bunda Collection succeeded through the implementation of comprehensive strategies, including product innovation, marketing digitalization, and operational efficiency. Networking proved to be an important factor in every phase of development, from gaining initial market access, expanding the reseller network, to surviving the crisis and pandemic. Abstract

This study aims to explore how relationship quotes on TikTok function as a sense-giving medium in shaping users’ emotional meaning-making. In the digital era, social media has become a dynamic space where individuals express, reframe, and validate their relational experiences. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach and NVivo-assisted thematic analysis, data were collected from five active TikTok users who frequently engage with relationship quote content. The findings reveal that such content is not merely consumed passively but serves as a trigger for emotional reflection, self-expression, and collective meaning construction. Digital interactions such as commenting, sharing, and creating duets foster sensemaking processes, allowing users to exchange perspectives and build an interconnected emotional ecosystem. These quotes offer a safe space for emotional expression, particularly for female users, while also raising issues such as narrative bias and unrealistic relational expectations. Thus, relationship quotes on TikTok function as a bridge between individual emotions and collective emotional consciousness in digital communication spaces. This study highlights the importance of emotional literacy in navigating the emotionally charged content landscape of social media.

Abstract

The film Avatar The Way of Water contains the use of sign language in communication which is interesting for researchers to conduct research with the aim of analyzing the meaning of sign language among the Metkayina tribe and with the Tulkun sea animal using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic method. The results of the study found that there are meanings of discrimination and cultural diversity due to the lack of understanding of sign language as a migrant tribe, as well as cooperation when hunting in the water by fellow nations in the Metkayina tribe. Other meanings found in this film are requests for help, friendship, and joking as closeness, gratitude, affirmation of friendship, care, trust, as well as greetings and exchanging news through spiritual connections when the Metkayina tribe communicates with Tulkun. The conclusion of this study is that there are 7 signifiers and signifieds, 5 forms and content, 2 langue and parole relationships, 2 synchronic and diachronic relationships, and 3 syntagmatic and associative relationships in sign language communication among the Metkayina tribe as well as 5 nonverbal movements as signifiers and signifieds, 6 gestures as form and content, 2 langue and parole relationships, 2 synchronic and diachronic relationships, and 3 syntagmatic and associative relationships when the Metkayina tribe communicates with the sea animal Tulkun. Researchers hope that further research can reveal the meaning of the use of sign language not only in films but in everyday life.

Abstract

The student press is part of the national press ecosystem, serving as a training ground for students to become journalists. The problems faced by the student press are not much different from those faced by the general press. The challenges faced by the student press include physical attacks, verbal intimidation, doxing, censorship, and even banning. The student press is more vulnerable because Law No. 40 of 1999 concerning the Press does not specifically mention campus press but only regulates legally incorporated press institutions. As a result, the position of the student press is weak; if their journalistic products are questioned, they cannot be mediated by the Press Council. It was not until 2024 that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Press Council and the Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI), which was opening the way for student press protection and consultation or mediation assistance with the Press Council, and training and education for campus presses as well.  The research paradigm is constructivism, where truth is social reality as a social construction, and the truth of social reality is relative. In this qualitative research, we conducted in-depth observations of student press informants.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the construction of student imagery in local media coverage in South Kalimantan during the 2019–2024 period. The primary focus is directed at how students are represented in the context of demonstrations through online media jejakrekam.com and langkar.id. A total of 157 articles were analyzed using instruments based on three main dimensions: Language/Tone, Content Focus, and Content Visibility. This study uses a quantitative-descriptive approach combined with qualitative reading, and is analyzed using the theoretical framework of Agenda Setting, Framing, Social Construction of Reality, and Communication Influence. The results show that both media do not construct the image of students as moral actors or symbols of change as is common in the historical narrative of the Indonesian student movement. The representation of students is mostly neutral and administrative, without strong symbolic content. The media tend to convey the reasons for the demonstrations informatively, but do not highlight the narrative of the impact or sustainability of the student struggle. Although the demonstrations are routinely covered and accompanied by multimedia elements, the distribution of content on social media is relatively low. These findings indicate a tendency towards depoliticization of narratives about students in local media, which has resulted in a weakening of the symbolic and political construction of students in the contemporary public sphere.
