Abstract

While most studies have focused on the challenges faced by high school students in writing descriptive or recount texts, limited research has examined the difficulties encountered by university students, particularly those with low motivation and insufficient grammar proficiency. This study aims to investigate the specific challenges faced by university-level students majoring in English when composing descriptive texts. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through a questionnaire distributed via Google Forms and a descriptive writing test. The findings reveal that grammar is the most significant challenge, with the lowest average score of 69.3 among five assessed categories. Common errors include incorrect tense usage and word choice, leading to unclear or unintended meanings. These findings highlight the need for targeted instructional strategies to enhance students' grammatical competence and overall writing proficiency.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to compare the mastery of English tenses between students majoring in Computer Science and those in Management. This study employs a quantitative methodology with a comparative approach. Utilizing purposive sampling, 20 students from each major were selected to receive instruction on nine English tenses using a uniform teaching method, followed by a comprehension test on the same tenses. The data, derived from test results, were statistically analyzed based on score ranges categorized by frequency, percentage, highest score, lowest score, and average score. The statistical outcomes from both majors were then compared to identify similarities and differences. The findings indicate that Computer Science students demonstrated greater proficiency in the Simple Present, Simple Future, Present Continuous, Present Perfect, and Past Perfect tenses, while Management students excelled in the Simple Future, Present Continuous, Past Continuous, Present Perfect, and Future Perfect tenses. According to the average test scores, Management students outperformed their Computer Science counterparts in nearly all tenses, with the exception of the Past Perfect tense. The difference in tense proficiency between Computer Science students and Management students can primarily be attributed to the nature of their academic training and the skills emphasized in their respective disciplines This research can serve as a foundational reference for English language instructors at the higher education level, applicable to both scientific and non-scientific study programs. By understanding the characteristics and proficiency levels of tense usage across different disciplines, English teachers can adapt their teaching methods accordingly to achieve optimal outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the transformative journey of Ella Rubinstein, the protagonist of Elif Shafak's The Forty Rules of Love, focusing on her psychological and emotional evolution as she grapples with existential crisis, unfulfilling relationships, and societal expectations. Using a qualitative analysis of Ella’s evolving character, this study examines how her exposure to Rumi's philosophies, through her correspondence with A.Z. Zahara, catalyzes her journey of self-discovery and redefines her understanding of love and identity. By analyzing key themes such as the conflict between societal norms and individual desires, this study uncovers how Ella's awakening reflects broader questions of autonomy, love, and self-actualization. The results suggest that love, as a transformative force, can transcend conventional boundaries and empower individuals to redefine their identities beyond traditional roles, offering a critique of contemporary views on love and relationships. This case study contributes to the broader discourse on personal empowerment, challenging ingrained beliefs and highlighting the power of love in facilitating meaningful life changes.

Abstract

This study examines the emotional transformation of the main character, Ove, in A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman through a literary psychology approach. The purpose of this research is to explore how Ove’s emotional journey—from being stubborn, isolated, and pessimistic to finding renewed meaning in life—is influenced by his relationships and experiences. Using a qualitative descriptive method with documentation techniques for data collection, this study analyzes key interactions, particularly with his neighbor Parvaneh and symbolic elements such as a shabby cat, as well as the impact of his past, including the loss of his wife. The findings reveal that love, social relationships, and solidarity are crucial factors in emotional healing and personal growth. This research highlights the significance of human connection in overcoming isolation and loneliness, offering valuable insights for literary studies, education, and the development of inclusive communities.

Abstract

English language learning in Islamic schools often struggles to provide materials aligned with cultural and religious values. This study aimed to develop an interactive English e-module that integrates Islamic values to support the language skills of eighth-grade students in Islamic secondary school. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach and applied the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model proposed by Branch (2009). Data were collected through interviews, documentation, questionnaires, and User Experience Questionnaires (UEQ). Results indicated that the e-module was deemed feasible by both material and media experts. During implementation, evaluations from 41 students revealed a positive assessment across all aspects including attractiveness, perspective, efficiency, dependability, stimulation, and novelty. This e-module combined multimedia elements and interactive activities to support language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) while instilling Islamic values. It was hoped that this interactive e-module would be an effective supplementary learning tool to improve students' English language skills while strengthening their understanding of Islamic values, both at school and at home. This study offered a structured approach to integrating religious values into language learning through digital tools, providing insights for future curriculum development.

Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) has significant potential to enhance education by providing immersive and interactive learning experiences. This study conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to explore the challenges and opportunities in AR implementation for education. Findings indicate that while AR improves student engagement and comprehension of abstract concepts, its adoption in developing countries is hindered by limited infrastructure, inadequate teacher training, and unsupportive policies. In contrast, developed nations have successfully integrated AR due to stronger infrastructure, comprehensive educator training, and supportive policies. To facilitate AR adoption in developing countries, investments in infrastructure, teacher capacity-building, and policy support are essential. These findings highlight the need for collaboration among governments, educators, and technology developers to address challenges and expand access to AR-enhanced education.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of the guiding question technique in enhancing students’ Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) at a senior high school in Cianjur. It employed a quantitative approach with an experimental design, using pre- and post-tests to assess HOTS development. The findings revealed that in the control class, the mean HOTS score before treatment was 61.88, which increased to 74.00 after applying the conventional method. The significance value for the HOTS assessment variable in this group was 0.840. Meanwhile, in the experimental class, the mean HOTS score before treatment was 61.38, rising to 88.62 after implementing the guiding question technique. The post-test HOTS assessment in this group showed a significance value of 0.000. The t-test results confirmed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, indicating that students in the experimental class achieved a higher improvement in HOTS compared to those in the control class. These results establish that the guiding question technique is an effective method for enhancing students' higher-order thinking skills.
