Abstract

An essential component of a student's learning process is motivation. The primary issue, specifically VII A in SMP Khadijah 2 Surabaya academic year 2022/2023, was identified by the researcher as a lack of desire during speaking class. The pupils were apathetic, easily bored, did not participate in the learning process, and did not give the assignment their full attention. The purpose of   the study is to implement the use of field trip videos to increase the students' English speaking motivation and achievement in VIIA students of SMP Khadijah 2 Surabaya so the lack of motivation and achievement can be solved. The research question for this study is how can the use of field trips videos motivate students to speak English? And, how can the use of field trips videos improve students 'English speaking achievement? To address the issue of low motivation and achievement, the researcher employed classroom action research to install field trip videos. To assess the researcher's data, qualitative and quantitative methodologies are both used. The qualitative approach is used to gather data utilizing field notes, surveys, observations, and interviews. For each cycle, data from the speaking    pre- and post-tests are gathered using the quantitative method. The findings show that field trip videos improves students' English speaking motivation and achievement in speaking class. This can be seen from the improvement in each cycle. Nineteen of the twenty-four students received score that exceeded the Minimum Mastery Requirement (KKM).

In the 21st century, technology has become the most powerful development in the world. In the last two decades, digital usage has influenced every aspect such as economic, social, political, and education fields. Along with developments that occur every day, in the realm of education, the curriculum has changed in recent years where K13 prioritizes the use of ICT in schools. The participants were two English teachers of SMPN 1 Singosari who have applied teaching with ICT and conventional, and using in-depth interview to collect the data. The result revealed that the teachers have interest in studying ICT but still using conventional media. It implied that there was something that needed to be fixed to maximize the use of ICT in the classroom. Furthermore, it is recommended that socialization and training sessions are frequently held to upgrade the expertise and skills in teaching English.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the perception of English students at an Islamic University in Jambi regarding the use of Blended Learning in the post-Covid condition. Blended Learning, which combines traditional face-to-face instruction with online learning, has been shown in previous research to have a significant impact on learning, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. To assess the participants' perception of Blended Learning, a survey method was employed, utilizing a questionnaire as a tool to gather data. The questionnaire focused on three dimensions: Blended Learning benefits, Blended Learning challenges, and the assessment of course quality based on Blended Learning. The findings of this research indicate that the participants provided an average assessment of the benefits associated with Blended Learning, a high assessment of the challenges faced when implementing this approach, and an average assessment of the course quality based on Blended Learning. These results shed light on the English students' perceptions of Blended Learning in the context of post-Covid education.

The ultimate purpose of the study is to examine gender representative aspects of International General Certificate of Secondary Education English as a Second Language 5th Edition textbook published by Cambridge. This study is aimed at analyzing how gender is portrayed through attributes, actions, and activities, employing Brugeilles and Cromer’s theory of gender description. Utilizing Kripendorff’s content analysis and Bowen’s document analysis, the writer carefully identified the images and the texts which contained attributes, actions, and activities. Then, the writer analyzed each text and image in accordance with Brugeilles and Cromer’s theory. The result revelaed that the textbook portrayed both males and females in the form of images and texts. Besides, both males and females are depicted to suit the activities and the actions, as well as attributes, related to Brugeilles and Cromer’s theory.  Females are known to wear make-up and powder. They are also known to be meticulous and patient. Also, they now begin to be involved in activities of which were once identical to males. On the other hand, males are identical to field job. They do activities out of the home more frequently. They also take parts in activities that require power and more energy as males are known to have stronger physical aspects than females. This study also offers its limitations and suggested future research of the topic. Future research may administer investigations with applying Brugeilles and Cromer’s theory of gender description in its entirety.

Abstract

This study explores the correlation between students' mastery of functional grammar and their achievement in writing recount texts, conducted within the context of an Islamic boarding school. The research aims to address two main questions: (1) How do male and female students perform in grammar learning and writing skills and (2) Is there a correlation between the mastery of functional grammar and students’ writing skills in junior high school. The study collected the data from eighth-grade students and categorized the results according to gender. The findings demonstrated that male and female students performed slightly differently in functional grammar tests and writing tests. The lowest functional grammar exam score for male students was 58, while it was 52 for female students. In contrast, the top scores for both genders were 97. In the writing assessment, similar differences were found, with male students scoring as low as 60 and female students scoring as low as 48. A group of both male and female students obtained the highest maximum score of 100. This research also investigates the relationship between students' functional grammar mastery and their ability to write factual recount texts. The estimated r-count value of 0.9487 was found to be significantly higher than the r-table value of 0.3550, r-count (0.9487) > r-table (03550) using the Pearson product-moment correlation and a significance level of 0.05, showing a significant positive correlation. Hence, it can be concluded that the implementation of functional grammar has a significant influence in developing students' writing skills on factual recount text with the aim that they are not only able to arrange words into a paragraph, but also able to convey the ideas and meanings they express in their writing.

Abstract

This study attempts to explore the potentiality of a fantasy film, i.e., Maleficent, to be used as a tool to sharpen language learners’ critical literacy toward the issue of gender construction. The purpose of the study is to unravel the genre of fantasy film as a space to deconstruct the way gender is represented. This study borrows the framework of postcolonial feminism in deconstructing and reconstructing the portrayal of the main female protagonist. As the study also discusses the insights of using film as a tool to facilitate language learning, the data is also gained from the teacher-student written and verbal reflection. The reflection data is then analyzed using narrative analysis proposed by (Creswell, 2012). The study gives insights into how fantasy films can be used for language teaching. The analysis of Maleficent as a powerful tool to sharpen language learners’ critical gender literacy.

Abstract

This research investigates the iconic and timeless masterpiece song "Imagine" by John Lennon, seeking to unravel the profound messages and ideologies that lie beneath its evocative lyrics for peace, unity, and social change. The study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Teun A. van Dijk to conduct a comprehensive analysis of macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure of the song. This research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing content analysis and thematic analysis to explore the meanings and messages conveyed in the lyrics. Content analysis is employed to examine the explicit messages and themes presented in the song, while thematic analysis delves into the implicit meanings and underlying ideologies. This study finds that in the level of macrostructure, the vision of a utopian world free from religious, national, and materialistic barriers emerges as the central message, emphasizing the value and dignity of every individual. The superstructure analysis delves into the construction of the song's elements and their cohesive arrangement, highlighting its universal appeal and global consciousness to participate actively in creating positive change to build a better world. The microstructure analysis investigates the nuanced meanings conveyed by specific linguistic elements, such as rhetorical devices, lexical choices, emotive language, and direct address. Beyond its explicit messages, "Imagine" serves as a critique of societal constructs that perpetuate divisions and inequalities, challenging listeners to imagine alternative ways of organizing society based on compassion and shared humanity.
