Abstract

Abstract This study investigates the coverage of conflict and peace issues in Nigerian newspapers, specifically focusing on Punch and Daily Trust. The research aims to achieve three primary objectives: assess the frequency of conflict and peace reportage in both newspapers, determine the level of prominence given to these issues by Punch and Daily Trust, and identify the categories under which such issues are reported. The study draws on the Agenda-Setting Theory and Framing Theory to provide a comprehensive analysis. Using a quantitative content analysis approach, the study examines stories related to conflict and peace issues published in the selected newspapers from January 2019 to July 2019. The key findings reveal distinct patterns in the reportage of conflict and peace matters. Punch exhibits a higher emphasis on certain categories like "Calamity/Killing," "Prevention," and "Warning," while Daily Trust places greater prominence on the "Call for Peace" theme. Moreover, the study unveils variations in the prominence given to different categories across the newspapers. The study concludes that the nuanced ways in which Punch and Daily Trust cover conflict and peace issues is based on their editorial decisions in shaping public awareness and discussions. Based on the study's outcomes, it is recommended that newspapers strategically consider their coverage of conflict and peace topics, fostering greater balance and comprehensive reporting. By adhering to these recommendations, newspapers can contribute to more informed public discourse on crucial societal matters.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between law, literature, and postmodernism within the context of South Asian English literature. The objective of this study is to analyse the historical development of legal narratives and their subsequent influence on notions of human rights, cultural identity, and justice. Examining and challenging legal narratives, "Burnt Shadows" by Kamila Shamsie, "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini, "The English Patient" by Michael Ondaatje, and "The Sea of Poppies" by Amitav Ghosh use postmodern literary techniques. Using Katherine Belsey's postmodernism paradigm as a theoretical perspective, the purpose of this study is to analyse the deconstructed and reconstructed narratives found in the novels. The primary objective of these academic investigations is to provide a deeper comprehension of the dominant legal discourses in South Asia and their broader implications.

Abstract

The phenomenon of using social media as a medium to meet the information and education needs of society is the result of the rapid development of the internet. Now people's needs are easily met, because various things are included in it. This can be analyzed based on the phenomenon of Instagram accounts as information on feminism education in the Instagram account @perempuanbercerita. The purpose of writing this research article is that the many cases against women make Instagram an information medium capable of providing feminist education to followers, using qualitative research methods with observation, note-taking and descriptive analysis techniques, with the phenomenological study approach of Edmund Husserls. The research subject is the flow of feminist educational information from the Instagram account @perempuanbercerita to followers of the Instagram account @perempuanbercerita. The use of social media Instagram as an educational medium, as well as empowering women, produces responses in the form of information, emotions and actions in accessing @perempuanbercerita posts as well as conscious experiences in cognitive and perceptual aspects in line with the development of the same meaning related to feminist values.

Abstract

According to data from the Jombang Regency Traffic Traffic Unit of December 2022, there were 114 cases of traffic accidents on the Jombang-Kertosono arterial road. Thus, an analysis of road safety is needed on this road section. The author analyzes the application of road safety using the IPA (Importance Performance Analysis) method, the EAN (Equivalent Accident Number) method, and geometric calculations of roads in accident-prone areas. Based on the analysis of the application of road safety using the IPA method, it is known that the main priority attributes in driving safety are traffic signs and road markings as well as sharp turns which are quite dangerous for motorists. Based on the analysis of accident-prone areas using the EAN method, it is known that STA 01+00 – 02+00 has the highest EAN score of 249 accidents. Based on the road geometric review, it is known that the stopping sight distance of STA 01+00 – 02+00 is 46.78 m which when compared to the standard stopping sight distance is not sufficient and is considered less safe. The value of the side freedom area according to the calculation analysis is 5.4 m which is greater than the available E value, which is 4 m, so it is considered less safe. There are 2 suggested bends using the Spiral-Circle-Spiral type and 2 Spiral-Spiral type bends where each of these bends requires widening the average road pavement width of 1 meter to reduce the risk of traffic accidents on bends due to adequate road width.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a prevalent mesenchymal tumor affecting the digestive tract, with the stomach being the most common location. While some GIST cases are sporadic with no known risk factors, certain factors like age and genetic abnormalities increase the risk. Early diagnosis of GIST remains challenging due to atypical symptoms, leading to late diagnoses and reduced survival rates. This research aims to identify specific risk factors related to local populations, develop accurate early diagnosis methods, and formulate more effective treatment strategies. The study involves a retrospective observational approach, collecting data from medical records of GIST patients and analyzing risk factors and treatment outcomes. The results highlight the increasing prevalence of GIST globally, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and early diagnosis. Challenges in early diagnosis and treatment underscore the importance of public awareness, medical education, and collaborative efforts for better GIST management. This research offers implications for the development of diagnostic guidelines and more effective treatment approaches, ultimately improving the prognosis and quality of life for GIST patients.

Abstract

The rapid development of social media provides easy access to unlimited information and freedom of information. Access to the internet allows every individual to access a variety of available information. Information about the Kanjuruhan football tragedy which caused many fatalities is an interesting topic for the media to cover. The methodology used in this research is framing analysis developed by Pan and Kosicky, while the approach adopted is a qualitative approach. The findings obtained from this investigation are that Tempo online magazine's reporting on the tragedy was critical, informative and very provocative. These indications can be seen from the results of the framing analysis carried out, namely in the framing of the main news: in the Kanjuruhan tragedy there were errors and omissions caused by the security team (either the political committee or police officers), syntactic elements: strengthening the main framing by using unbalanced quotes from sources and the news writer has too many opinions, script elements: strengthening the news, the How element to reduce the why element, thematic elements: there are 5 big themes in the news as material for the news writer, rhetorical elements: the use of cover photos and several graphics and words used to emphasize elements of news that seem hyperbolic and provocative. Furthermore, it can be concluded by researchers that Tempo Online magazine constructs reality for the purposes of social criticism to the Kanjuruhan tragedy competition committee and the government, especially the Indonesian National Police, in reporting through a framing process.
