Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of the legitimacy of oppression through religious narratives on social media, especially Instagram. Social media has become an influential space in disseminating religious content that is multi-interpretive, creating passive acceptance of existing socio-economic conditions. Using a qualitative approach and critical discourse analysis, this study analyzes how religious narratives spread through texts and visual elements function as hegemonic tools. The results of the study show that narratives such as "it is better to be poor in this world but rich in the hereafter" reinforce unequal social structures by encouraging the values of surrender and acceptance. This has an impact on various aspects of people's lives, including the economy, education, and social participation, which can slow down progressive social change. This study emphasizes the importance of critical awareness of religious narratives so that people are not trapped in the legitimacy of oppression.

Abstract

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human social interaction, especially in the service industry such as cafes. Personal selling is an important communication strategy in building relationships between sellers and buyers. This study aims to analyze how personal selling carried out by Seis Caffé Medan baristas contributes to building communication relationships with customers and its impact on customer loyalty. Using descriptive qualitative methods, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and then analyzed with the Miles and Huberman model. The results of the study show that the personal selling implemented by baristas at Seis Caffé Medan does not only focus on buying and selling transactions, but also on building interpersonal relationships with customers. Persuasive communication used by baristas includes friendly language, open facial expressions, and an approach that puts customers as friends, not just consumers. Adaptation in personal selling was also found to be an important factor, where new baristas need time and support from the work environment to develop their communication skills

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the “No Viral No Justice” phenomenon influences legal proceedings in the digital era in Indonesia, specifically through agenda-setting and framing mechanisms on social media. Employing a qualitative approach, the research analyzes two cases: (1) the death of a young woman named Vina in Cirebon and (2) the assault of a bakery employee by George Sugama. Data collection methods include non-participant observation and content analysis of platforms such as Twitter and TikTok. Findings reveal that the intensity of user engagement, the role of influencers, and emotional narratives constructed on social media effectively prompt a faster response from law enforcement agencies. Conversely, this phenomenon also carries the risk of trial by social media and misinformation when fact verification is neglected. In conclusion, “No Viral, No Justice” can serve as a shortcut for victims with limited legal access; however, improved digital literacy and careful legal safeguards are necessary to maintain objectivity and professionalism in law enforcement.

Abstract

This study analyzes the implementation of the policy for the development of Lake Lau Kawar tourist attractions based on the Van Meter and Van Horn policy implementation theory. The focus of the research includes policy standards and objectives, resources, characteristics of implementing agents, communication between implementing agencies, environmental conditions, and implementing dispositions. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data is collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and analysis of policy documents. The data analysis technique used is the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The validity of the data is maintained through triangulation of sources and methods. The results of the study show that although the tourism development policy has been regulated in Regent Regulation No. 32 of 2019 concerning Tourism Villages, its implementation has not been optimal. Limited infrastructure, lack of tourism promotion, lack of coordination between stakeholders, and lack of human and financial resources are the main obstacles. To increase the effectiveness of implementation, a strategy is needed that includes improving infrastructure, optimizing the budget, and increasing community involvement in tourism management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of collaborative governance in developing Nologaten's Ecotourism, a tourist area located in RW 04, Nologaten, Caturtunggal, Sleman Regency. This area was previously a slum on the banks of the Gajah Wong River, but has been successfully revitalized through the City Without Slums (Kotaku) program since 2017. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, involving eight informants from elements of the village government, ecotourism managers, and the community. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The study results show that the development of Nologaten Ecotourism involves multi-stakeholder collaboration with structured roles, facilitative leadership, and a strong communication and trust-building process. This collaboration promotes environmental conservation, cultural conservation, and local economic improvement, although there are still challenges in waste management and tourism promotion. This study concludes that collaborative governance is an effective approach in realizing participatory and community-based sustainable tourism governance. This finding is expected to be a reference for the development of other tourist villages in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of interpersonal communication in the process of cultural acculturation between ethnic Chinese and Batak Toba students at Prima University, Medan. In Indonesia, which is rich in cultural diversity, intercultural communication is the key to building harmonious relationships in a multicultural campus environment. Through a qualitative approach and case studies, data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations of five students from both ethnicities. The results of the study show that open, empathetic, and respectful interpersonal communication plays an important role in reducing prejudice and facilitating interaction between students. Social activities, group discussions, and campus cultural events are the main means of exchanging values and learning about each other's cultures. Despite challenges such as stereotypes, prejudices, and language barriers, the use of social media plays a significant role in strengthening communication between students, allowing them to share cultural experiences more broadly. This study suggests that universities should continue to support activities that encourage intercultural interaction and strengthen interpersonal communication among students.

Abstract

The use of online dating applications such as Bumble is becoming increasingly popular among teenagers and young adults, offering convenience in building social relationships. However, these applications also have the potential to encourage deviant behavior that can impact users' social and psychological well-being. This study aims to analyze the influence of Bumble usage on deviant behavior among teenagers at Universitas Medan Area using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that, besides being used to find romantic partners, Bumble is also utilized for entertainment and expanding social networks. However, several forms of deviant behavior were identified, including identity manipulation, emotional exploitation, and an increased risk of casual relationships. Additionally, excessive reliance on online communication may reduce face-to-face social interaction skills. These findings highlight the importance of digital literacy and stricter policies from app developers to minimize negative impacts. This study contributes to the fields of communication and sociology while providing insights for educators, parents, and app developers in understanding the dynamics of teenage social interactions in the digital era.

Abstract

Movies not only function as entertainment but also as a medium of communication that represents social, cultural, and ideological realities. This study analyzes the concept of patriarchy in Bene Dion's film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap using the Roland Barthes semiotic approach. With qualitative research methods and case studies, this study examines how signifiers such as dialogue, expression, and interaction between characters form signified that reflect the dominance of men in the Batak family. The myths built in this film reinforce the understanding that patriarchy is a natural and hereditary system. The results of the study show that this film features patriarchy as an integral part of Batak culture, where men play the role of the main decision-makers and women are positioned as followers. This representation is not only seen in the relationship between husband and wife but also in the dynamics between boys and girls. This study contributes to the study of communication and gender by opening up further discussions about how film as a medium can maintain or critique existing social structures.
