Abstract

There are a number of variations in foreign language teaching methodologies. The learning paradigm has changed from merely translating and memorizing linguistic structures that are often done by students in Samarinda, turning towards constructivist learning where strategies throughout the learning process are applied by students through the help of teachers. They are currently learning although the strategy cannot be generalized. The strategies have been classified according to their characteristics in the following groups: metacognitive, cognitive, social and affective. In this study, the social strategies carried out through the e-learning platform by our foreign language learners are analyzed as well as constructivist learning, which is closely related to the use of social strategies promoted in this study after previous research (Sumarni. 2018) has described the mapping of foreign language learning strategies and become a reference for more in-depth research this time. For this descriptive statistic investigation, 100 students from the University of 17 August 1945 Samarinda was selected and the instrument of a social strategy questionnaire (adapted by SILL 7.0 Version) was developed based on the strengths of this strategy, namely, asking, cooperating, empathizing and practicing during the method of the constructive learning through The Breakout Room in Zoom Cloud Meeting. In the name of establishing students as a center and to have a higher motivation in online learning during pandemic, this investigation deserves to be used as an appropriate recommendation.

The second finding is that the development of the speaking module went well. Based on the 9 steps of R & D, the researcher got some revision and validation from the material expert, the media expert, and the 30 students of Informatics Engineering. The third finding is that the quality of the speaking module is "Excellent" in design criteria, with a 100% validation score based on media expert validation. This means that the module can be used without revision. In addition, it got "Good" criteria in material or the content of the module with an 80% validation score based on material expert validation. This means the module can be used with a little bit of revision. Furthermore, based on students' assessment toward the module, it got "Excellent" criteria with a 100% score from 30 students of Informatics Engineering. Based on the results, it showed that the Speaking Module for Informatics Engineering at STTIKOM Insan Unggul Cilegon can be used as an aid for teaching speaking.

Abstract

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has brought suffering to almost people around the world. These situations lead people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, including children. They need to learn about the virus that affects them and their community. Among the learning resources of Coronavirus to be learned by children, the researchers find the use of conceptual metaphors depicting the virus. Using the descriptive qualitative analysis and cognitive semantics approach, this article aims to analyze how Coronavirus is depicted through the conceptual metaphors. The data is taken from learning resources which are electronic books (e-book) and video published on Social Media. In analyzing the data, the researchers use the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and the mapping theory by Langacker (1987). The research results show that (1) the Coronavirus is mainly depicted as A HUMAN, and (2) COVID-19 Pandemic is also depicted as A WAR. The use of conceptual metaphor is helpful to help children understand the complex ideas about Coronaviruses in simple terms and to help them understand what is happening. The use of conceptual metaphors also will help the parents and caregivers explain the Coronavirus to children.
