Abstract

Abstract Al-Jauf is among five general makhraj (where the discharge letter) which is often expressed by scholars of recitation kotemporer. Meanwhile, scholars have different opinions previous recitation of existence as one makhraj letter or not. The letters that come out of this makhraj there are three, namely : alif, Wawu sukun preceded by dammah, and ya` sukun was preceded by kasrah. Three in terms of recitation referred to as mad or long vowel letters in phonetic terms. This study wants to reveal the nature of al-jauf makhraj according to the perspective of both the scholars of recitation and kotemporer previous scholars, in order to obtain a description in the pronunciation of the letters of the Koran, in particular the al-jaufiyahletter or mad letter. Abstract

Among the Banjar people, the book of Sanjata Mu'min has been guidance to everyday life. Various readings and prayers derived from the verses of the Qur'an in this book are believed to have certain efficacies. Like the weapons used to guard against opponents' attacks, the practices of the Sanjata Mu'min are intended as such. It is interesting to study this book to know how the Banjar people construct the concept of weapons and how their religious rationality forms an identity that is only owned by the Banjar people. Through phenomenological approach, this study concluded that the Banjar people prefer to depend on the Qur'anic verses and other Islamic recitation than previously magical objects to reach their concept of ideal prosperous life, both in the world and the hereafter. The merit of the recitation in the Sanjata Mu'min believed by the Banjar people is a manifestation of lay exegesis of the Qur'anic verses through their semantic-functional reception.

Abstract

Abstrak Mushaf Al-Qur'an adalah naskah Islam yang paling banyak disalin, namun masih sedikit yang mengkajinya terutama dari aspek ulumul quran. Perhatian terhadap mushaf kuno lebih banyak pada aspek iluminasinya. Aspek ini memang sangat menawan dibandingkan naskah lainnya. Minimnya kajian ulumul quran pada mushaf kuno diperparah dengan masifnya migrasi mushaf kuno ke luar negeri. Mushaf-mushaf tersebut menyimpan khazanah ilmu-ilmu al-Qur'an tempatan. Mushaf kuno disalin menggunakan banyak ilmu bantu, dan dengan ilmu tersebut ia dapat direkonstruksi kembali pada masa kini. Tulisan ini menawarkan metode penelitian pada beberapa aspek ilmu Qur'an dari mushaf kuno yaitu: rasm, qiraat, wakaf, dan d¸abt¹­. Keempat aspek tersebut dapat menghasilkan kajian deskriptif, kajian identifikasi, kajian konsistensi, dan komparasi. Metode ini dapat dimanfaatkan oleh para pengkaji al-Qur'an baik di pesantren sebagai salah satu produsen naskah maupun akademisi di perguruan tinggi Islam. Dengannya, diharapkan membuka tabir mata rantai ilmu quran di Indonesia pada masa lalu. Kata kunci: Mushaf Kuno, Rasm Usmani, Dabt, metode penelitian mushaf kuno.

Abstract

Abstract The history of the Qur'an is a new scientific discipline being pioneered by Theodor Nöldeke. Book of The History of the Qur'an that he wrote has a significant impact on the development of the study of the history of the Qur'an in the muslim world. Previously, muslim scholars put the study of the history of Qur'an into the scope discussion of the ‘ulÅ«mul-Qur'an. Being started from Abu Abd Allah al-ZanjānÄ« with his work TārÄ«kh alQur'an (1935), the influence spred to various parts of the world, including Indonesia. This paper will discuss to what extent Nöldeke's influence is on the works of muslim scholars in Indonesia concerning the history of the Qur'an which is periodically compiled. Starting from the mid-20th century that continues until now, the influence is felt by muslims in Indonesia in the form of works, methodologies used, as well as the responses both positive and negative ones. The birth of works such as that of Abu Bakar Aceh (Sedjarah Al-Qur'an), that of M Quraish Shihab (Sejarah dan ‘Ulum Al-Qur'an), Taufik Adnan Amal (Rekonstruksi Sejarah Al-Qur'an) and A. Athaillah (Sejarah Al-Qur'an: Verifikasi tentang Oentisitas Al-Qur'an) is evidence of that influence. Abstract

One of the study objects in Arabic study is related to the issue of (word) and ma'na (meaning). The lafẓ and ma'na studies are actually not only seriously studied by 'Abdul Qāhir al-Jurjānī (d. 471 H/ 1078 CE). In general, there are at least two groups in linguistic studies, namely the group that emphasizes mostly on pronunciation and another one is supported group of meaning. According to al-Jurjāni, a lafẓ is a sign, an attribute for ma'na. Lafẓ becomes part of language which is not placed to show ma'na for itself, but to be collected from one another so that the contents are known. The existence of a lafẓ is certainly be preceded by ma'na, while ma'na in the view of al-Jurjānī is the intended idea or purpose. This article reveals and understands al-Jurjānī's theory of the relationship between lafẓ and ma'na and their implications to the interpretation of the Qur'an. This research is a qualitative research by using the main references of two phenomenal works of al-Jurjani, namely Dalāil al-I’jāz and Asrār al-Balāgah.

Abstract

This article discusses the issue of women's rights in the perspective of the Javanese Qur'anic exegesis. This study is motivated by the phenomenon of patriarchal culture developing in the life of the Javanese people. Al-Ibrīz's exegesis is the Qur'anic interpretation by Bisri Mustafa and Tāj al-Muslimīn by Mishbah Mustafa reflect the phenomenon of patriarchal culture. This study tries to know the background and the reasons of the differences in the interpretation of both exegeses. Through the analysis of Gadamer hermeneutics, this study shows that the patriarchal nuances in the interpretation of both are influenced by the sources of interpretation and the approach being used. Both of those exegeses use classical commentaries and fiqh works written by Middle Eastern scholars who are also patriarchal in character. In addition to that, the use of the taḥlīli interpretation method with the textual approach (‘umūm al-lafẓi) also has an impact on the results of interpretations which tend to be patriarchal. The important difference between the two interpretations in responding to gender issues lies in the different situations and conditions at the time of writing. Mishbah tends to be more able to respond to gender issues than Bisri, because Misbah has come into contact with the thoughts of reformers who at that time began to flourish in Indonesia.

Abstract

The article discusses one of the Muhammadiyah Quranic interpretations namely Poestaka Hadi written by Ki Bagoes Hadikoesoema (d. 1954), a chairman of Muhammadiyah and a national figure. This article examines the extent to which Muhammadiyah's ideology and nationalism discourse are discussed in Poestaka Hadi, and will answer three questions, how is the development of the Qur'anic interpretation in Muhammadiyah; how was Poestaka Hadi compiled; and how does Poestaka Hadi show the ideological tendencies of Muhammadiyah and its nationalism. By doing history and hermeneutical analysis, Poestaka Hadi was a new genre of Qur'anic interpretation in Muhammadiyah. Poestaka Hadi was structured as piwoecal sae or a guide to life in the community which includes the themes of faith, charity, and morals. Muhammadiyah's ideology appears at the point of concern of Ki Bagoes Hadikoesoema in giving life guidance to aspects of faith, charity and morals. The methodology of interpretation of Poestaka Hadi leads to a rational and contextual approach. Meanwhile, the nationalist ideas of Poestaka Hadi are appeared in the practice of social values such as the concept of piwoecal sae, leadership and organizational ethics. Abstract

This study focuses on the interpretation of the Qur’an verses on whip according to two Acehnese commentators, namely Abdurrauf in the Quranic interpretation of Tarjum?n al-Mustaf?d and Hasbi in the Qur’anic interpretation of an-Nur. Using Gadamer's hermeneutical approach, the result of this study shows that each of both interpretations of Abdurrauf and Hasbi is colored by the social conditions of the surrounding communities. An exegete can not be separated from previous understandings, both from his knowledge and the social conditions in which he lives. Abdurrauf uses the term “beating or whacking” to interprete the word jild, while Hasbi uses the term “whip” which each of those words was used in that period. In addition, according to Abdurrauf, the punishment for adulterers who were slaves was half of the free women, being whipped for 50 times and being exiled for half a year. As for Hasbi, she had to be whipped for 50 times without being exiled. Furthermore, Abdurrauf did not interpret the words ??'ifah and mu??anat into Malay, but absorbed directly from the language of the Qur’an.

Abstract

This article aims at examining the translation changes in the Qur’an and its Translation (QDT) published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, especially in three editions (1969, 1990 and 2002) related to human creation (4: 1, 7: 189, 39: 6, 3: 21, 16: 72, 42: 11 ) and heavenly couple (2: 25, 3: 15, 4: 57). The article also attempts to uncover the ideological aspects, especially gender ideology, behind the changes. This research proves the existence of the translation changes in the three editions, especially in the 2002 edition, which are not only related to diction (word choice), structure and sentence structure, but also the substance of translation. This article argues that the translation changes are related to the ideological shift of the state towards gender-friendly policy, and power relations between the state (especially through the Ministry of Religious Affairs) and translators (or precisely the correctors of the translation), and the position of translators (or the correctors of the translation) as social agents who are not always fully subject themselves to the ideology of the state.

Abstract

This study observes the dialogue of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) being held by Mishbah Musthofa (1916-1994) to understand the deeper meaning of the Qur’anic verses of being reflected in exploring the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an as reflected in his Qur’anic interpretation of al-Iklīl fī Maʻānī at-Tanzīl, particularly when it is seen from the aspect of the pesantren tradition. The approach used is known as cultural enculturation, a perspective which emphasizes the dialectic of revelation (the Qur’an) and local culture. The results of the study showed that there were two response models in their interpretations. The first is to adopt in order to complement (adoptive-complement). It can be seen by the attitude of accepting the tradition which is developed in the pesantren. For example the use of Pegon scripts (Arabic script in Javanese language), yellow books and religious traditions. The second is to adopt in order to reconstruct (adoptive-reconstructive). It is shown through his critical attitude towards some pesantren traditions. For example, Misbah Musthofa’s critique to the tradition of respecting (ta?z?m) the kiai, tarekat tradition, refusing the Qur'anic reciting competition (Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an), and praying by using loudspeakers. This study confirms the integration between pesantren culture and interpretation in the process of interpreting the Qur'an.
