This study discusses the translator’s experience in the project of Sundanese translation of the Qur’?n being published by the Agency of Research, Development, Education and Training of Ministry of Religious Affairs of Republic of Indonesia in 2018-2019. The project was organized by Sundanese scholars of the State Islamic University of “Sunan Gunung Djati†and Padjadjaran University, Bandung. As one of the translator team members, the writer tried to phenomenologically explain the language negotiations, the ideology of the majority in Qur’anic translation and the limit of academic behind the project. The result of the study shows that the project of Qur’anic translation which is funded by Indonesian government involved not only academic problems, but also non-academic ones. It is not only related to the discussion of the substance of the Qur’anic translation which became the medium of negotiations between the expert of the Qur’?n and the Sundanese language, but also involved the administration and government control to the ideology of Islamic majority. This study also shows that the academic has to be neutral and objective in order to able to transcend the ethnic and ideological boundaries. This article is part of the writer’s argument based on the writer’s choice, although as part of the translator team, he has been overshadowed by the ideology of Islamic majority.

Observing the many of methodological problems in conducting research on the works of the Qur'an and its interpretations, the author of this article explains certain approaches and analyzes that have been used by some prominent researchers in this area. The author describes the possible approach which is divided into two main parts: (1) critical approach of history, and (2) an interpretative approach. The main objective of the first approach is to evaluate, to whom the text of a particular interpretation must be addressed to, and how to some extent the certain statements in the interpretation can be considered correct. The second approach can be done by doing three types of analysis: (1) descriptive analysis, (2) explanatory analysis, and (3) critical analysis. According to the author, the research in the field of Qur'an and its interpretation requires not only Islamic sciences, but also contemporary theories in the fields of sociology, literature, philosophy, hermeneutics, and feminism. The writer expects that researchers in the field of interpretation should take the opportunity to deepen these supporting sciences in order that the research will be more developed and varied.

This article discusses the phenomenon of the use of transliteration in reading the Qur’an. The focus of the research takes place in Payakumbuh and its surroundings which is known as an area whose people are predominantly muslim. This research was conducted by using a qualitative approach. Data are obtained by structured interviews and observations. In this study it can be seen that there are some people who use transliteration in reading the Qur’an. They hope that the Qur’anic transliteration can be continually developed in order to make it easier for those who are unable to read the Qur’an in Arabic letters. However, some groups, such as teachers and religious educators, do not approve the transliteration of the Qur’an.According to them, the transliteration of the Qur’an has a greater harm than that of the benefits. The existence of transliteration is worried to weaken the enthusiasm of muslims to learn how to read the Koran in Arabic letters. In addition to that, the Latin letter symbol is considered unable to accurately represent Arabic letters in terms of makhraj and its nature, so it is worried that there will be a mispronunciation of therecitation of the Qur’an. KeywordsReading the Qur’an, Latin-Arabic transliteration, learning Al-Qur’an, reading and writing the Qur’an.

Critics to Indonesian Standard Qur'an concerning the use of rasm continue to be carried out by a number of circles. The book of Difference of UṡmÄnÄ« Rasm Between Indonesian Standard Qur'an and al-Musḥaf al-MadÄ«nah of Saudi Arabia in the Perspective of ad-DÄnÄ« and AbÅ« DawÅ«d by Zainal Arifin Madzkur comes to answer those critics. The review of this book will look at the objectivity of the discussion conducted by the author on the two mushafs that were compared. The tendency of the author of the book is inevitable, but remains in the corridor of scientific objectivity. This book makes a significant contribution, especially to Indonesian Standard Qur'an that has not had a comprehensive scientific foundation yet. The notes are given to the main points of this book in order to give a balanced view, especially relating to the use of the uṡmÄnÄ« rasm in the mushaf. This book shows that the use of the uṡmÄnÄ« rasm in the Qur'an cannot be based only on one or two schools, considering the complexity of the study of the uṡmÄnÄ« rasm. Therefore, the most correct claim cannot be raised as each mushaf has advantages and disadvantages that cannot be avoided.

At present there are only more than 25 thousand active users. This research wants to find out the factors that influence people's preferences in the use of Qur'an Kemenag's application. This study uses a mixed method, namely qualitative and quantitative. The population of this study is the muslim community of smartphone owners and users of the digital Qur'an. The selection of respondents was done by purposive sampling, conducted in 14 cities in Indonesia with a total of 50 respondents per city, and 3 informants for in-depth interviews. This article presents the results of the study of Archipelago Mushaf in the collection of Brunei State Archives which so far have not been carried out specifically. This study is important to be done as the complement to the previous study being conducted by Annabel Teh Gallop in photographing the distribution of ancient manuscripts in Southeast Asia. The study conducted by Annabel has been able to map Southeast Asian manuscripts into several typologies based on the results of codicological studies. However, the study does not include the collection of Brunei State Archives which has a large collection of ancient manuscripts. Through a codicological and textual approaches, this study is expected to be able to explain the typology of ancient manuscripts existed in the collection of Brunei State Archives. The result of the study shows that the ancient manuscripts of the collection of Brunei State Archives have typologies which can be strongly identified as having the original characteristics from Java and Patani, Southern Thailand, two centers of copying productive ancient manuscripts in Southeast Asia. This fact also confirms that most of the archipelago’s ancient manuscripts have migrated from the area where they were copied to other places. Kata kunci: Ancient mushaf typology, Brunei State Archives, Archipelago manuscripts.

The academic debate related to the possibility of writing of the Qur'an using the grammatical Arabic system and that of the rasm usmani is very dynamic and has not been ended hitherto. That phenomenon is reflected in the development of the rasm usmani (the system of writing the Qur’an) literature which emerges almost in every century. This paper aims to show the richness of the Qur’anic study writing in the rasm usmani in the Islamic world. This survey traces the works of Qur’an scholars in the Islamic world from the 2nd to the 14th century Hijri whose physical evidence can be found until today. The references of the writing of the Qur’anic manuscripts come from these works. Starting from the literature which discusses the differences in writing until the time of the compilation of manuscripts, and the emergence of ash-Shaikh?n? in the 5th century Hijri. This survey shows that the richness of the study of the writing of the Qur’an using the rasm usmani is dynamic and varied. In addition to that, it shows the development and shocking differences in the form of the study of Qur’anic writing with thematic and tahl?l? patterns per verse, as well as its development which starts to lead to i?j?z in the form of writing of rasm usmani.

Several researchers have reported that only a few Qur’anic manuscripts discovered. Among this limited discovery is Candi Cangkuang Qur’anic and tafsir manuscript founded in Garut, West Java. This research attempts to examine Candi Cangkuang Qur’anic and tafsir manuscript. Particular attention is given to investigate its origin, contents and structures of the manuscript. This research employs qualitative method to find out socio-historical background of the manuscript.
