Abstract

This article attempts to examine M. Dawam Rahardjoʾs interpretation through his two works, Ensiklopedi al-Qurʾan: Tafsir Sosial Berdasarkan Konsep-konsep Kunci (The Encyclopedia of the Qurʾan: Social Interpretation Based on Key Concepts) and Paradigma al-Qurʾan: Metodologi Tafsir & Kritik Sosial (Paradigm of the Qurʾan: Methodology of Interpretation and Social Critique). In the treasures of Indonesian commentary literature, the two works of Rahardjo were unique, new and different at the time they appeared. The presentation in encyclopedic form and discussions that raise social issues make these work one of the pioneers of social-thematic interpretation. By using a descriptive-analytical method and a historical approach, this article attempts to trace and examine the ideas of interpretation in the two works hermeneutically to see how Rahardjo reads the Qurʾan in responding the social problems in society. The results of this study show at least three things: first, that Rahardjo’s interpretation from the beginning was directed to respond to ongoing social issues of his time; second, Rahardjo’s thinking was classified as progressive in his time because he attempts to solve social problems by integrating thematic interpretation with social science approach that he masters; third, his hermeneutical reading of the Qurʾan allows his interpretation to be relevant to the problems that exist in society.

Abstract

This study discusses one type of mushaf that is widely circulated in Indonesia, namely Mushaf Al-Qur’an in word by word translation. This study uses a qualitative method with an analytical descriptive approach. In this discussion, the author tries to explain the phenomenon of Mushaf Al-Qur’an in word by word translation, especially from the aspect of word fragmentation and translation. The results of the study show that the pattern of cutting off the pronunciation in various mushafs of word-by-word translations is different and not standard. However, it can be simplified into two hyphenation patterns, pure word hyphenation and mixed hyphenation. The pattern of cutting off different pronunciations also has implications for the translation. From the translation aspect, the production of word-by-word translations originates from the complete translation of the Ministry of Religion with minor adjustments, while others produce from the results of studies sourced from certain references.

Abstract

This paper attempts to review the concept of “marriage” contained in the Qur’an as an authoritative source in Islam. This study uses the Maqāṣidī interpretation approach as an effort to reconstruct the concept of marriage. The main material object in this study is surah al-Rūm/30: 21 regarding the general concept of marriage and several other supporting verses. After conducting an in-depth analysis through the eyes of theMaqāṣidī Tafsir, the fundamental maqāṣid aspects of the marriage verses are found; ḥifẓ al-dīn, ḥifẓ al-nafs, ḥifẓ al-aql, ḥifẓ al-māl, ḥifẓ al-nasl, and ḥifẓ al-daulah. Then based on the analysis of the maqāṣid Al-Qur’an aspect, marriage consists of elements of iṣlāḥ al-fard (individual benefit), iṣlāḥ al-mujtama’ (social benefit), and iṣlāḥ al-’ālam (universal benefit). Thus, it can be concluded that child marriage has many negative impacts (disadvantages), so this practice should be prevented and stopped. This prevention requires support from all levels of society, including the government. One of them is by reviewing the implementation of a marriage dispensation for children who have not reached the minimum age limit of 19 years.

Abstract

Mosque collection. As a new discovery, these manuscripts have not been previously disclosed to the public. This research is important given the minimal attention that Qur’anic manuscript studies in the Pakualaman Duchy have received from researchers, thereby prompting further investigation. The method employed is qualitative-descriptive research conducted in three stages. The first step involves manuscript inventory, the second step includes manuscript description, and the third step comprises analysis. A codicological approach is used to discover the characteristics of the manuscripts, while the Qur’anic sciences are applied to analyze the script (rasm), recitations (qira'at), and Tajweed signs. The results show that the six ancient manuscripts of the Pakualaman Grand Mosque predominantly use the imla'i rasm with various qira'at of 'Asim from the Hafs transmission. Two manuscripts contain a type of illumination called “wedana renggan” with simple ornamentation. The color variants and forms of illumination of the Pakualaman Grand Mosque manuscripts tend to be simpler and serve a decorative purpose.

Abstract

This article maps the typology of the Qur’anic interpretation in Madura based on tendencies in socio-religious thought. This study is part of a library research on the Qur’anic interpretation in Madura. The first typology is modernist interpretation, represented by Tapser Sorat Yaa-siin by Muhammad Irsyad, seen through its emphasis on returning to the Qur’an and Hadith, rejection of myths, mysticism, blind imitation, and opposition to visiting the graves of saints. The second typology is traditionalist interpretation represented by Tafsir Firdaus an-Na'im by Thaifur Ali Wafa. The indicators include reliance on riwayah (narrations), strict limitations on personal opinions (al-ra’y), a strong adherence to the traditions of the school of thought (mazhab), and acceptance, even advocacy, of practices like seeking intercession (tawasul) and visiting the grave of saints. The last typology is the traditionalist-progressive interpretation, represented by Tafsir Alqur’anul Karim Nurul Huda by Mudhar Tamim. Indications of traditionalist-progressive thinking in this interpretation include referencing the interpretations of main figures of reformist movements, fidelity to the school of thought tradition, criticism of teachings and practices of Sufism contradicting the Qur’an and Sunnah by citing the opinions of Ibn Taymiyyah, acceptance of weak (da'if ) hadiths, and having mythological dimensions.

Abstract

This research seeks to reveal the message behind the story of Abu Lahab contained in sura Al-Lahab (111): 1-5. This is considered necessary because the Qur’an condemns someone to destruction for his enmity towards the religion of Allah. Surah Al-Lahab was revealed to a living person but passed judgment on events yet to occur, leaving room for repentance. Hence, it contains symbols that require interpretation. The method used is qualitative, emphasizing literature studies, and the obtained data is presented descriptively and interpretatively, utilizing Michael Riffatere’s semiotic approach. The results of this study indicate that Surah Al-Lahab was revealed to Abu Lahab and his wife due to their hostility towards the religion of Allah, their arrogance closing their hearts, their penchant for spreading slander, and provoking others towards evil. Surah Al-Lahab was revealed as a climactic punishment for their deeds in the world. Through this story, Allah reminds humanity not to behave like Abu Lahab, as the punishment outlined in Surah Al-Lahab applies to all those who possess the characteristics of Abu Lahab.

Abstract

This article discusses the coherence of sura, a method of tafsir advocated by contemporary Western scholars, which has been recognized by Nusantara scholars. The focus here is on Buya Malik Ahmad, a Minangkabau scholar of tafsir who authored a work titled “Tafsir Sinar”. In addition to emphasizing the nuzuli (interpretation based on chronology of revelation) tafsir of sura, Buya Malik’s tafsir is also strongly infused with its coherence. By grouping verses into categories, Buya Malik seeks to demonstrate that the suras in the Qur’an form a cohesive and integral unity. This research identifies at least three characteristics of Buya Malik’s tafsir. First, Buya Malik not only establishes the internal coherence of sura but also its external coherence. Second, he categorizes verses not only based on the grammatical structure and thematic content of a sura but also based on information about its revelation (tartib nuzuli). Lastly, Buya Malik determines the main theme of a sura through its chronological order of revelation (tartib nuzuli). These three characteristics contribute a distinct perspective to the discourse on sura coherence, especially in the Nusantara region.

Abstract

The study results on rasm (script) of ancient manuscripts indicate that only a few manuscripts adhere to the rules of Uthmani rasm. Among these limited manuscripts, the selection of Uthmani rasm rules differs from what is commonly chosen today, namely the riwayah (transmissions) of Abu 'Amr ad-Dani and Abu Dawud Sulaiman, along with their works in the field of rasm, Al-Muqni' and At-Tabyin. This study attempts to analyze the references of the application of the Uthmani rasm in the ancient manuscript of Kampung Kusamba, Bali. Such studies are crucial for understanding the landscape of rasm studies during specific eras in the past, especially in light of claims of the negligible use of the Uthmani rasm since the 4th century of the Hijri calendar. Utilizing codicological, historical, and scriptural perspectives, the application of Uthmani rasm in the ancient manuscript of Kampung Kusamba, Bali refers to the text of Manar al-Huda. The chosen reference provides an explanation of how the rules of Uthmani rasm can be consistently applied in ancient manuscripts while also indicating a strong relationship between rasm studies and the science of tajwid.

Abstract

Social media has opened space for practically anyone to interpret the Qur’an, thus the contestation of tafsir cannot be avoided. The term e-tafsir in this article refers to the Quranic interpretations that appear in the digital space through new media (both website and social media). This study employs a digital ethnography method by investigating and observing various websites related to the Quranic interpretations. It focuses on popular Islamic websites such as tafsiralquran.id, ibtimes.id, and buletinkaffah.com, which regularly uploaded Islamic articles between 2020 and 2023. The research argues that social media has resulted in the proliferation of e-tafsir, including conservative (textualist) interpretations of the Qur’an. Furthermore, the author contends that to reduce radicalism in Indonesia, it is not enough to block conservative websites; it should be countered by spreading moderate Quranic interpretations. This article unveils the contestation of e-tafsir in Indonesia, which may also occur in other digitalizing Muslim worlds.

Abstract

This article examines the concise tafsir of the 30 chapters ( juz) by M. Quraish Shihab and the one published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The article reveals that the concise tafsir is the result of simplifying a detailed tafsir made by the same author. Analyzed through Julia Kristeva’s theory of intertextuality, the simplification consists of three patterns of transposition. First, rearrangement, which involves reorganizing the discussion of tafsir by presenting a tafsir that is relatively similar but in a different form. Second, substitution, which entails replacing specific tafsir considered less relevant to modern society. Third, reduction, which involves minimizing particular tafsir that is controversial or appears complicated to understand. In the context of its emergence, the making of this tafsir is part of an effort to modernize tafsir in modern Indonesia. This simultaneously emphasizes the emergence of an awareness for the renewal of tafsir among Indonesian Muslims through the compilation of a concise, practical, and complete 30-chapter of tafsir that aligns with the real needs of modern society, rather than creating thematic tafsir.
