The article focuses on the possibilities and the limitations of how far the political control is operating in the field of the science. The dynamics of the scientific development goes into two directions, namely to build up the autonomous position of the science and to make the science being bridled by the social problems from outside. The author tries to show up the possibilities the political control of the science can be done properly in the phase of its historical development, but at the same time the author points out the limitations the political control of the science should face. The article ends up with a description of an ethical problem found in the present times due to the one-sided development of the science, namely being determined and directed by the other interests outside from the science itself.

Hidup moralitas tidaklah cukup jika hanya mengandalkan kemampuan penalaran.

Value education is indispensable to the today world which currently promotes pluralism. The Weltanschauung is plural and randomly diffused. Consequently, shift of value (Wertwandel) occurs inevitably. The Catholic Church is concerned with what we call “indifference” that poisons people in such a way that moral value then turns to an only subjective one. Value is often meant as that which is positively useful, worth, good for quality of life. The postmodern period however sets a condition that such quality of life is always diffused. Everybody has his own standard of quality of life. This is the reason why moral theology should elaborate value education in spite of Wertwandel. The article discusses the said topics in three parts: 1) shift of value (Wertwandel) in postmodern time; 2) theories of Werwandel; and 3) some concluding theses of how the Church should cope the problem of Wertwandel.

Mission is the very nature of Church’s existence. One of the current theological movements is what we call “contextualisation”. In line with such theological movement, the church in Asia is called to redefine his mission. A year ago the professors of the School of Philosophy and Theology, Widya Sasana, discussed systematically the issue of contextualisation: its meanings, bases, implications in connection with the Church’s mission in Asia. This brief article would draw some essential elements of doing contextualisation. The starting point of so doing is “Sentire cum Ecclesia”, a feeling that makes us conform our hope and concern to the Church. The second element dealt with is awareness of the context, which is an Asian reality with challenges to be coped. What should we do with mission is the concluding suggestion of this short elaboration.

Every human being is born free. The human freedom flows from his/her natural existence. In society it is not always that the natural freedom of woman is recognized. The article searches carefully the philosophical ethics of women’s freedom. It asserts that the problem of women’s freedom is not really in the philosophical but rather the social point of view. The arguments put forward are based especially on philosphical and theological perspectives of Islamic world.

Tertulian is the Latin father of the church who eradiated many writings; and “de Anima” is one of his important writing, which treats about soul. In this writing, Tertulian wrote his polemic with Platonism and Stoicism philosophy. Both philosophies have advantage and disadvantage. Tertulian as a philosopher and believer profits these philosophies of advantage and disadvantage in his polemic about soul with the philosophers. At the end of his polemic, he concludes that the both philosophies could be a great help for the teaching of soul, but also be a seed of heresy.

The effect of the Dutch colonialism in Indonesia can still be observed in the historiography on the Indonesian Churches. It is partly due to the fact that the colonialism was closely related to christian missions. After the proclamation of the Indonesian Independence, the progress of the Indonesian nationalism has influenced the way of the historians to chart the history of Indonesian, as well as that of the Catholic Church, in the light of this conception. In this article, we will reflect on the meaning of the historical truth by taking into consideration some ideas in the political theology in so far as these can be observed in the reflections of J.B. Metz. And in so doing, we intend to learn how to prevent ourselves from proclaiming that we have the historical truth.

Maraknya globalisasi menyembulkan pertanyaan “masihkah perlu nasionalisme?”

This is a reading on the theology of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. It is a narrative theology and therefore must be listened by the believing communities as narrative. Jesus is the Lord of His Passion. His is doing the will of the Father. He is King of the Truth rejected by the Jews. His death is the birth of a new community and the source of its life. The author concludes his study with a short reflection on this great theology of the Passion for the Church. pendidikan.
