Abstract

One of theses that would be presented here in this article is within the historiography of the modern era of religious tolerance the Protestant Reformation era has always been considered of paramount important for the developments which led to the achievement of a liberal and tolerant society. The history shows, however, that the first century of the Reformation was followed by the intolerence, and some nations like Germany, France, England put into practice the political, economic interets which corelatted with religious belief. The break-up of the near monolithic structure of medieval Western Christianity for the first time presented contemporary lay and ecclesiastical rulers with the practical problem of how to deal with religious plurality. The aspects of religious toleration, such as freedom of conscience and freedom of worship, are something new. This article presents the efforts of Western Christians to give the solution.

The author describes first the general view of the hermeneutical philosophy in the light of the historical development, especially the ideas of some important philosophers who were dealing systematically with the hermeneutics, and then the author tries to apply the hermeneutics to the field of religion and of culture in the separated way. The last part of the article is concentrated on the theme of how to understand and to interprete the meaning of religion and culture unseparatedly.
DILEMA DETERMINISME MANUSIA: Sebuah Perjalanan Reflektif Sains Surjani Wonorahardjo

Abstract

The development of science and technology cannot be excluded from the human thinking in modern world. One of the major problem which echo comes and goes along the time is the what so called "dilemma of determinism", which is also associated inclusively to the problem of God's existence. Natural science brings a deep implication in thinking leading to determinism of human being as a part of the nature and moves together with the natural processes, that flows according to the natural laws without human decision. But modern science which development is accelerated by the combination of concepts in physics, chemistry and computer, explains that the previous natural laws do not apply in micro systems and the quantum mechanics takes over to rule the behavior of elementary particles in atomic scale. Then modern concepts in science aroused: chaos, complexity, dissipative structure, fractal, which speak about irregularity, unpredictability, then a causality of things that rooted deeply from the microscale dynamics, are expected to be one way out which provides a "chance" which in turn still offers a place for human freedom.

Abstract

Abstract

This article deals philosophically with the war crimes against humanity in the international law. The study focuses on the understanding of what we mean by the war crime and its historical development. The war crimes presuppose the list of the unlawful materials or cruel actions by which we mean violation against humanity. The author offers analysis of war crimes from the perspective of the international law or international convention concerning war. He suggests that the knowledge of what may be called “war crimes” is indispensable, as our time is at war (actually war on Iraq by the Allies). In addition, in a war-time the law enforcement seems to be in vain as well. The author tries to impose the indisputable human treatment toward those who are involved in war. The people should be respected humanly regardless of war-time.

Abstract

What is the true sense of religion today? Prof. Wismoady Wahono PhD, one of the Indonesian leading theologians who just passed away to God’s embracing hands a few days before this publication, traces succinctly the sense of religion. He also suggests what would be the proper meaning of religion that should be cultivated in the current situation of Indonesia. Religion should not be a formal emblem of a person living in a society. It should lead him to cope any challenge of peaceful religious pro-existence especially in Indonesia. Armada Riyanto goes further to discuss the topic dealt with in the context of theology of pluralism. “Is there a basic Christian consensus theology today in spite of all our differences?” This is a typically question put forward by some theologians of pluralism. The sense of religious pro-existence is identical with that of living dialogically the Christian faith. This article consists of two main parts: tracing the meaning of living religion from isolation to pro-existence (in context of the Indonesian plurality) and theological discussion concerning “pro-existence” as not just living together peacefully but living the Christian faith embracing dialogically the differences (in context of the theological opinions of pluralism).

Abstract

Tema humilitas dalam etika politik terbilang baru. Sejak Machiavelli tak pernah kerendahan hati menjadi suatu elaborasi filsafat etika politik. Artikel ini sedianya dimaksudkan untuk buku Gladly to Learn and Gladly to Teach: Essays on Religion and Political Philosophy in Honor of Ernest Fortin, A.A., edited by Michael P. Foley and Douglas Kries, Lexington Books, 2002.

Abstract

There is a general sad observation that the formation of our priestly students is too intellectual to the detriment of its affective element. The students loose the capacity to perceive the things of beauty. How can this situation be remedied? The author of this article is of the opinion that one of the ways out is the study of the Bible as literature and the use of psalms in the atmosphere of beauty. As poetry of christian worship music, chant, oracle, wisdom, prayer, joyful praise and thanks, silence, dance, play, action and architecture are all main elements that make the psalms and therefore should integrated and manifested in their use. Only by then can the students be imbued by their feelings and emotions and be captivated by their beauty. The psalms are a school of integral formation.

Abstract

Can. 271 §§ 1-2 of the 1983 Code speaks about temporary transmigration of diocesan priests. It is a new norm in the Code of Canon Law. The same matter was also regulated by the 1917 Code and subsequent norms, but in a restrictive and cautious way in order to get rid of the absolute priestly ordination and to promote the ecclesiastical discipline among priests. Can. 271 §§ 1-2 has its origin from the teaching of the Second Vatican Council. The Church now promotes the temporary transmigration of priests from a diocese to another, from a region to another, on the one hand to respond to the new, more dynamic pastoral needs of the Church, which need the ministry of priests, and on the other to resolve the shortage of priests in the Catholic world. This canon provides a juridical means for the Church to have a more proportional distribution of priests, both in the world and among the particular Churches. It also expresses communion and cooperation between priests and bishops, and among particular Churches
