Abstract

A prominent global shoe brand, such as Adidas, is intricately linked to its identity as a product and a fashion symbol. The brand's commitment to innovation and development is evident through various collaborations, a notable example being the partnership with Lego. The focus of this research is the ZX 8000 Lego® shoes, a product made from the fusion of Adidas and Lego. Analyzing the product photo of these shoes serves as the basis for exploring symbols and their meanings. Product photos, as a powerful tool, contain information that captivates consumers and influences purchasing decisions. This qualitative research, employing a descriptive analysis method with the Roland Barthes Semiotics approach, delves into denotation (signifiers) and connotation (signified) meanings within the elements of the product photo. The identified meanings lay the groundwork for unraveling the myth or ideology embedded in the product photos. The study reveals denotations like dominant shoe pairs, vibrant colors, contrasting materials, dual logos, scattered Lego blocks, a white background, and trademark presence. Connotations, on the other hand, revolve around roles, harmonization of meaning, strategic displays, simplicity as a value, and trademarks as assets and symbols of approval. These meanings collectively aim at attracting new consumers, suggesting an underlying ideology favoring capitalism. Despite this, the collaboration proves mutually beneficial, portraying a harmonious coexistence that benefits both brands.

Abstract

This study is about the application of the mind mapping method done by a group of design students in the context of graphic design learning. Mind mapping is one of the thinking tools commonly used in the creative thinking process. The goal of this study is to analyze how the participants use this thinking tool and reflect upon its utility as a method applied during the divergent phase in the series of design process. The method used here is a case study, using mixed approaches of qualitative-descriptive and quantitative explanations to measure the qualitative aspects. Results show that the participants can do the mind mapping method, which essentially pertains to its functions, though not rigidly following the formal techniques taught by Buzan. Through comparing the mind maps produced by them with the grades they got for the exploration criteria of their design results, it’s yet to be concluded that the mind map quality can determine the quality of the resulting design.

Abstract

As the culture of drinking coffee strengthens in various circles of Indonesian society, the amount of residual dregs produced from brewing coffee drinks is also increasing. The main objective of this design process is to find the right mixture composition to reprocess coffee grounds so that they can be used as a basic material for making ornamental plant pots. In finding the right dough composition, this design was carried out through a material exploration approach by mixing several other binders with coffee grounds. After going through 30 trials involving several ingredients such as coffee grounds, starch, vinegar, glycerol, water, jelly, and PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol), this experiment succeeded in getting the right and ideal composition with characteristics resembling clay and easy to use. molded and does not crack easily when dry. As a result, this design process succeeded in producing an initial product in the form of a small plant pot for ornamental plants made from the dregs left over from brewing coffee drinks. This ornamental plant pot product is an initial stage product which at the next design stage can be developed into a more complex and attractive product.

Abstract

Fashion, clothing and culture are communication and cultural phenomenon, in which fashion communication has both socialization and differentiation function. In the realm of fashion and clothing, the forming of social groups and personal identities are established through continuous communication process. This phenomenon occurred in the development of kebaya encim and Chinese Peranakan batik at Java in the 19th century. Kebaya encim was a type of kebaya worn by Peranakan Chinese women, therefore it had visual characteristics which were eminently influenced by Chinese culture. The Chinese Peranakan women used to wear kebaya as upper clothes, combined with Peranakan Chinese batik cloth as skirt At the beginning, kebaya encim and Peranakan Chinese batik emulated the kebaya and batik characteristics worn by Dutch women in Java. This was due to the desire of Peranakans to acquire equal privilidge with the Dutch in the society. This research aims to define the role of fashion communication in the development of kebaya encim and Peranakan Chinese batik in the 19th century at Java Island. Therefore, this research utilises descriptive qualitative approach. Theories which are used in this research are Barnard's fashion communication theory and Lukman's mimicry and hibridity theory. This research confirms that there is fashion communication process that can be emphasized from socialization and differentiation function with mimicry and hybridity phenomenon in kebaya encim and Peranakan Chinese batik. Socialization can be seen from mimicry of Dutch's kebaya and batik style to obtain social equality. Moreover there is also differentiation function, since the Chinese Peranakans made some special adjustments toward their own kebaya and batik characteristics in order to be more suitable with their culture.

Abstract

This study analyzes visual transformation through the formalist approach in two iconic works by Wassily Kandinsky, "Composition V" and "Composition VII." Through the formalist approach, this research explores how visual elements such as lines, shapes, colors, and composition are used to create a profound transformation in a work of visual art. Furthermore, visual analysis methods are applied to dissect the aesthetic changes between these two works and their implications. The results reveal Kandinsky's evolution in aesthetic emotions, depicting abstract reality and raising questions about the boundaries of visual expression. This study contributes to an understanding of Kandinsky's works and the relevance of the formalist concept in the experience of aesthetics and visual interpretation.

Abstract

In 2023, there will be a phenomenon in the city of Bandung, namely that the number of vehicles is almost the same as the population, causing congestion and increased pollution levels which often occur on roads during commuter trips at times when vehicle volume is very dense, namely in the morning and evening. The existence of alternative transportation, namely bicycles, could be the answer to this phenomenon. However, there is a phenomenon that the number of cyclists in the city of Bandung is decreasing, especially for commuters. By looking at this potential, this research discusses design strategies for commuter cyclists with a case study in the city of Bandung. This research is a qualitative and quantitative research in the field of design to analyze cyclists commuting by bicycle by documenting visual samples as image aspect data, interviews with the creator aspect and questionnaires to consumers as the viewer aspect. Data obtained from various data collection methods is then analyzed using design strategies looking at internal and external factors. The results of this research will answer design strategies for commuter cyclists with a case study in the city of Bandung. Through this research, it is hoped that it can become a guide that makes it easier for people to commute on bicycles in the city of Bandung.

Abstract

The stress experience in the childhood poses significant and enduring risks to both physical and psychological development. Stress not only adversely affects physical health but also correlates with serious issues such as suicide, psychological symptoms, depression, and school dropout rates. The age of 6-9 years is a period of transition in exploratory learning and playing to formal schooling with exams so that this age is vulnerable to early stress. The activity of reading books that children and parents do can provide a sense of comfort, thereby reducing children's stress. Picture books are believed to be related to the formation of children's character, introduce concepts, and have a positive impact on the world of children. The visual narrative implied in the picture book can be a visual approach that attracts children. Until now, there has not been much research discussing visual narrative stress management for children aged 6-9 years. Research on book design using a visual narrative approach to introducing stress management as an alternative solution to problems needs to be carried out and studied. This study aims to design a visual narrative strategy that is implemented in a picture book illustration with the theme of stress management. This study uses a qualitative approach with literature studies, document studies, observations, and interviews to design the visual narrative’s strategy. The finding is that a visual narrative approach of contradiction, metaphor, and humor in children's books can be a illustration approach that provides comfort and a relaxing effect with easy-to-see illustrations.

Abstract

The presence of streaming applications is one of the positive impacts of the progress of the internet which is increasingly developing in a modern direction. This can be seen from the ease with which users can access the application via smartphone without being limited by distance and time. The first thing the user sees is the application's user interface (UI), which is the interface between the user and the application system. This research aims to compare the UI designs of the iQIYI and WeTV applications on smartphones to measure and see to what extent the application user interface (UI) can be used well. The user interface in the application will be analyzed formally and then use the theory of the Golden Rules of User Interface Design by Theo Mandel, namely placing the user in control, making it easier for the user to remember, and consistency of the interface. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods supported by observation and literature study. The results produced in the research are evaluation results which can be used as consideration in improving the application, both in terms of UI design and application performance.

Abstract

The element of natural lighting in a building is how an opening can influence how much light enters a room. In a residential home, openings play an important role, not only as an aesthetic element but also have the function of bringing the outside atmosphere into an interior space. The study will utilize Dialux simulation to compare natural lighting values between existing conditions and proposed designs with varying positions and sizes of openings, along with external reflection elements affecting simulation outcomes. The simulation employs consistent external and internal parameters for direct comparison. The aim is to obtain comparable data for informing the final design, crucial for renovation implementation planning to minimize cost and time impacts. The simulation results indicate that vertical openings in corner of the room have lower lighting levels compared to horizontal openings located centrally on the walls.
