Abstract

Initiated during the Covid-19 pandemic, this study examines the development and use of virtual laboratories at 'Universitas Terbuka' to facilitate science practicums. Initially a response to pandemic restrictions, these virtual labs proved to be invaluable due to the widespread geographic distribution of students across the Indonesian archipelago. As the world transitions to a new normal, with possibilities for on-site practical experiences resuming, this paper discusses how virtual labs can continue to ensure equitable access to practical science education. This aspect of equal opportunity in education, whether online or on-site, is termed 'scalable practicum' in this study. By using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, the paper evaluates the effectiveness of these virtual labs in providing hands-on scientific experimentation experiences that are both accessible and flexible. The findings suggest that, even beyond pandemic constraints, virtual labs remain a feasible and efficient alternative to traditional in-person labs, significantly enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. This paper emphasizes the adaptability of virtual labs to various learning contexts and their importance in the evolving landscape of science education. The study concludes by recommending further research with a broader demographic to thoroughly evaluate the long-term viability and impact of online scalable practicums in science learning.

Abstract

War, violence, disasters, sudden loss, serious illness, and other overwhelming and disturbing events constitute traumatic events. For learners with physical disabilities, trauma may result from the loss of function of a body part or previous exposure to violence. Attention is paid to the application of the trauma-informed approach in trying to curb school violence. This paper discusses the trauma-informed approach to school violence interventions for learners with physical disabilities. The article sought to explore the use of the trauma-informed approach to address school violence affecting learners with physical disabilities. The paper is built on the findings from my doctoral thesis on the effectiveness of interventions to control school violence in a special needs school. This paper uses secondary data sources such as journals and books as well as data from doctoral research. These will be discussed with the findings from the previous doctoral research. It was revealed that although there are policies put in place to address school safety, the rate of school violence is escalating. Against this background, there is a need to address school violence from a trauma-informed approach. The trauma-informed perspective will help to prevent violence and suggest interventions. It will also guide educators on how to support learners, victims, or perpetrators of school violence. By offering data based on research on the use of trauma-informed approaches as an alternative method of school violence intervention, this study contributes to the body of knowledge. It gives the stakeholders suggestions for how to care for and educate vulnerable children.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze students' critical thinking well by utilizing digital literacy. The method in this study is a qualitative method. Samples were taken from 2nd semester class A students at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Data collection used a testing method. Critical thinking test questions function as instruments. Data analysis is the Miles & Huberman model analysis, namely qualitative data analysis, data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. Based on the research data, it can be concluded that the level of critical thinking of students is very high related to four indicators, namely interpretation, analysis, explanation and self-regulation. The conclusion and explanation indicators are included in the moderate category. This is based on the table described for the level of critical thinking of students. There are several things that an institution or university must do to maintain these capabilities in the digital era, so that students can use them wisely and benefit many audiences, such as: providing outreach regarding the proper use of social media and providing tips for avoiding hoax news, providing Montessori training to develop critical thinking skills, providing Mendeley training using qualified references.

Abstract

Researchers indicate that learners who are learning through a language that is not their own experience greater difficulty attaining the same level in science education than those learners whose home language is the same as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT). This shows a dire need for the development and application of scientific language registers in indigenous languages. In this qualitative interpretative case study, the researcher aimed to elucidate the perceptions of parents, learners, and teachers on the use of the developed IsiNdebele scientific register to teach natural sciences. This paper was guided by the following research question: What are the stakeholder's perceptions on the development and use of the isiNdebele scientific language register to teach Natural Sciences? Purposeful sampling was used to select the participants of this study: teachers, learners, and parents (stakeholders). The data for this paper was collected through interviews and observations. The results of the study reveal that isiNdebele is still underdeveloped as it lacks scientific terms and reveals different perceptions held by stakeholders on the use of the developed isiNdebele scientific language register to teach Natural Sciences. With the numerous research findings on the benefits of using indigenous languages and the results of this study, it is recommended that stakeholders re-consider their perceptions on the use of indigenous languages and scientific language registers be developed in indigenous languages as the use of these languages has proven to yield meaningful learning.

Abstract

The importance of government publications in meeting today's information needs cannot be overstated. This research sought to examine the utilization of government e-documents by lecturers in Nigerian universities. The research was directed by four specific objectives and two hypotheses, utilizing a descriptive survey research design. The population is 642 academic staff from the three universities. Questionnaires were used and analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Findings indicated that lecturers use shelves, printout indexes, open access, and librarian assistance to access government documents from Nigerian university libraries. Documents were used for historical, cultural, political, statistical, legal, and government research-related purposes. Challenges identified include the lack of digitization of government documents, poor documentation, and organization hindering their utilization. The study also found that the years of experience of lecturers significantly influenced their mode of accessing government documents (P = 0.003), while educational level/qualification significantly influenced the areas in which government documents were used by the lecturers (P = 0.000). Recommendations included improved digitization of government e-publications, encouraging more academic staff to utilize these resources in their research, improving the documentation of government e-documents, and fostering strong relationships between academic staff and librarians.

Abstract

The use of social media has affected the landscape of learning and is prompted by the need to communicate using novel Internet platforms. Social media serves as a networking database with a plurality of messages, allowing individuals to be connected. This paper explores the role of social media in education. The research problem stems from the growing integration of social media in educational environments, which raises questions about its effectiveness, challenges, and impact on teaching and learning processes. The lack of a comprehensive understanding of lecturers’ and students’ perceptions creates a gap in incorporating social media in education effectively. It was a qualitative study underscoring the views of a selection of teachers and students. Twelve (12) participants at a University of Technology were sampled purposefully to solicit their views on the role of social media in education. It emerged from the responses of participants that using Facebook had privacy challenges, and opposing views surfaced due to a lack of time to keep tracking friends’ posts. The novelty of this study lies in its comparative exploration of Facebook and WhatsApp as educational tools, highlighting specific challenges like privacy concerns, trolling, and time constraints.
