Abstract

A set of microbiologically induced corrosion was carried out on different types of carbon steels: AISI 1006 and API 5L X52, iron-oxidizing bacterium and sulfur-oxidizing bacterium, a mixed culture of Alicyclobacillus ferrooxydans SKC/SAA-2 and Aspergillus niger and Comamonas thiooxydans SKC/SAA-1, in the presence of the corrosion-inhibiting bacterium, Pseudomonas plecoglossicida. According to the immersion test experiments, weight loss of API 5L X52 was lower (0.06-0.27%) than AISI 1006 (0.14-0.32%). AISI 1006 showed more detrimental localized pitting corrosion than API 5L X52. During the longer incubation time, the corrosion-inhibiting bacterium was more homogenous and compact, which affected the specimen surface more protective characteristics. The 2-week-old biofilm effectively protected the API 5L X52, as indicated by the low amount and more negligible pitting corrosion. This study will be the first report on the biocorrosion behaviour of carbon steels using different corrosion-causing microbes in the presence of the corrosion-inhibiting bacterium.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the zooplankton species composition in super-intensive whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) tanks. The research was conducted from January to May 2021 in Bac Lieu City, Bac Lieu province, Vietnam. Eleven sampling times were divided into two periods, the nursery phase (six times) and the grow-out phase (five times) of shrimp culture. The results showed that water quality parameters fluctuated dramatically during the culture period, in which some nutrient concentrations tended to increase at the end of the shrimp culture period. Nine zooplankton species were recorded, of which five species belonged to Protozoa, three Rotifera species, and one Copepoda species. The number of zooplankton species did not differ significantly among the sampling periods. Protozoa had the highest species composition and density during most of the shrimp culture period. Copepoda was only identified in the nursery stage of shrimp culture. The species component of zooplankton had a close positive correlation with temperature, but their abundance did not have a significant relationship with water quality parameters because each species was affected by the different water quality parameters. Zoothamnium sp. had significantly positive correlations with total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrate (NO3)-, total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations. The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis had a strong relationship with TP content, whereas Dartintinnus alderae had a strong relationship with alkalinity. Protozoa dominance in shrimp tanks could affect shrimp growth, decreasing the economic efficiency of shrimp farming. Therefore, the results of this study contribute to water quality and natural food management to improve shrimp productivity.

Abstract

Colon cancer or colorectal cancer is one of the major health problems in the world. Previous research has proven that red betel leaves extract has anticancer activity against breast cancer cells. The study aimed to look at the potential of compounds contained in red betel ethyl acetate fraction as anticancer substances for colon cancer by conducting in silico tests through the docking of three colon cancer biomarker receptors against eight red betel leaves compounds. The parameters of binding affinity energy and inhibition constant used in the molecular docking analysis showed that there are several compounds that have the potential as inhibitors against colon cancer marker proteins to inhibit the development of colorectal cancer and have high bioavalibility as oral drugs. Based on in silico test it is known that the compound N-1,N-9-Bis [E-(2-nitophenyl) methylene] non anedihydrazide has the highest inhibition of human leukotriene A4 hydrolase receptor with binding affinity energy of 11.3160 Kcal/mol. The next compound is 4-({4,6-Bis[3R,5S)-3,5-diamino-1-piperydinyl]-1,3,5-traizin-2-yl}amino) benzenosulfon amide which has the highest inhibition in Chek1 with binding affinity energy of 9.7110 Kcal/mol, and the compound 4-(4-methoxy-phenylamino)-2,3-dihydro-1H-4a, 9-diaza-cyclopenta (b) fluorine-10-carbonitrile has the highest inhibition in the Bcl 2 navitoclax analog receptor with binding affinity energy of 8.4470 Kcal/mol.

Abstract

This study was aimed to confirms the Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) infection of ten banana accessions from Indonesia through PCR assay using primer of BBTV coat protein (CP) gene, also the sequences characteristics and phylogeny. Preliminary morphological results showed five acessions were positively infected with slight to severe intensity symptoms i.e. Pisang Berlin, Candi, Billa, Morosebo, and Mas Kripik; and five accessions were symptomless i.e. M. acuminata var. rutilifes and M. balbisiana, Pisang Ebung, Madu and Moseng. However, PCR results qualitatively confirms that all accessions were positively infected. Two sizes of amplicons were identified. Pisang Candi isolate was showing ±500 bp amplicons, whereas the others were ±1000-1100 bp. The total aligned and selected BBTV CP sequences of 36 accessions (bananas and other host species) was 450 nt. It was considered highly conserved (85.55%), low G+C content (41%), and high genetic similarities (92.47 to 100%). Phylogenetic analysis delineates isolates into two large groups, i.e. the Asian group (East Asia and South-east Asia) and the South Pacific group (South Asia, Africa and the Pacific). The findings of this study are usefull for broader applicability of further banana breeding program particularly for mitigation, selection and evaluation of banana with BBTV resistance.

Abstract

Previous research showed that Stichopus hermannii and Spirulina platensis had an antioxidant activity. It is indicated by the reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the liver of the diabetic rats. However, the STZ administration did not significantly increase MDA concentration of diabetic rats' blood serum for 14 days. This research aimed to determine in vitro and in vivo MDA inhibition of S. hermanii and S. platensis. The in vitro antioxidant activity test was conducted using the MDA-TBA method, and a positive control used α-tocopherol. For in vivo experiment, diabetic rats (DM) were induced by streptozotocin for 21 days. Twenty-five rats which were divided into five groups: normal rat group (NA), diabetic rat group (DA), diabetic rat group + glibenclamide (DG), diabetic rats + Stichopus hermanii (SH), and diabetic rats + Spirulina platensis (SP). The in vitro results showed that the antioxidant activity of 25 ppm Spirulina platensis had the same MDA inhibitory activity as 200 ppm α-tocopherol, but 200 ppm Stichopus hermanii had lower inhibition than 200 ppm α-tocopherol. The in vivo result showed that Stichopus hermanii treatment was more effective in suppressing blood serum MDA concentration, but Spirulina platensis was more effective in suppressing liver MDA concentration.

Abstract

Stress is a process that involves the perception of and response to pressure and is often related to eating behaviour. For college students, academic stress could be one factor that affects eating behaviour. So far, no longitudinal study has directly compared the same respondents’ stress levels and eating behaviours in different years of study. Thus, this study aimed to examine changes in stress levels and eating behaviour during college students’ third and final years and determine the correlation between stress levels and eating behaviour. We asked 89 undergraduate students (27 males and 62 females) to complete a questionnaire on their stress levels using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and their eating behaviour. Our results showed that students had significantly higher stress levels during the final year than in their third year. Our results also showed that during the student’s final year, there was a significant increase in eating when feeling stressed, overeating, eating fast food, and skipping meals compared to their third year. There was also a significant decrease in healthy food consumption during the final year compared to the third year. During the third year of study, stress levels were increased by academic workload pressure; meanwhile, during the final year of study, they were affected by sex and undergraduate thesis pressure. These results indicate that differences in academic pressure in different years of study can influence stress levels and eating behaviour in college students.

Abstract

Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni is a perennial herbaceous plant that produces natural low glycemic-index sweeteners alternative to sugar cane. The genetic improvement of Stevia needs to be investigated to increase its productivity. Although this plant has a narrow genetic diversity, genetic improvement through polyploidization may succeed. Meanwhile, genotypic characters of tetraploid Stevia were previously reported. This study then observed the phenotypic characters of the tetraploid plants, which aimed to evaluate the morphological and anatomical characteristics of tetraploid Stevia clones compared to its wild-type parental diploid plant. Three tetraploids and one diploid clone were grown in the field for 12 weeks. The results of qualitative descriptive characters showed that the tetraploid clones B60.3H8, P1T22 and P3T5 had habitus type, shoot bud shape, leaf margin, leaf venation, shape, and type of stem, type of flower, and seed similar to the diploid parental clone. However, the quantitative characters showed that the tetraploid clones had leaf size, stem diameter, root size, length of the single flower, length of the flower stalk, and length of fruit which were more extensive than those of the parental diploid clone. The leaf color of tetraploids was a darker green, and the range of initial flowering times was earlier. This finding gives more understanding of the phenotypic and anatomical characteristics of Stevia tetraploids compared to their parental diploid plant.

Abstract

Eastern little tuna (Euthynnus affinis) is a commercially important species for coastal communities in the western and southern part of Indonesia. However, little is known about its characteristics. Therefore, a comprehensive and broader research of its population structure is imminent in response to conserve and manage the fishery sustainably. This study aimed to fill the gap of the lacking information on the stock separation of eastern little tuna within the Indonesian archipelagic waters and its Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). Population genetic approaches were used to examine population structure using the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region marker. A total of 94 samples were collected from nine landing sites between January to September 2020. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify the samples, and Sanger sequencing was used to sequence them. The findings showed a mean value of 0.922 for genetic diversity (Hd) and 0.009 for nucleotide diversity (π). Both of these numbers pointed to a high level of genetic diversity. A further population analyses using Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) and Discriminant Analysis of Principal Component (DAPC) confirmed a mixing gene pool with no distinct population structure detected (ΦST value of 0.097 and p-value>0.05).

Abstract

Latex diagnosis is widely adopted in natural rubber-producing countries to optimize the natural rubber production through a physiological-based latex-harvesting system management. This study is the first bibliographical searching and meta-analysis on the variation of latex physiological parameters i.e. sucrose, inorganic phosphorus, thiols, and total solid content. The study used information extracted from 158 scientific papers. Descriptive statistics, agglomerative hierarchical clustering, and principal component analysis were performed to characterize applications of latex diagnosis, how often parameters are used and interpreted as well as the variation of its parameter values. From 158 papers, latex diagnosis parameters were used in 114 agronomy, 22 in physiology, and 22 in breeding papers. The agglomerative hierarchical clustering analysis indicated that sucrose and inorganic phosphorus contents were clustered together and total solid and thiols contents were located in another cluster. The average values of the total solid content, sucrose, inorganic phosphorus and thiols were 43.9%, 9.4 mM, 16.5 mM, and 0.52 mM, respectively. The percentage of interpretation is 63.3% for sucrose, 54.4% for inorganic phosphorus, 47.5% for thiols, and 41.1% for the total solid content. The low interpretation of thiols and total solid contents question their relevance in latex diagnosis. The low adoption of latex diagnosis in breeding could hinder the selection of activities leads to a limitation of selection for long-term high yielding and stress-adapted clones.

Abstract

Massive tubule fibrosis is a histopathology hallmark of chronic renal failure (CRF). The previous study of protein hydrolysate of green pea (Pisum sativum) bromelain (PHGPB) showed promising results as an antifibrosis in glucose-induced renal mesangial culture cells, by decreasing their TGF-β levels. In this experiment the anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic effect of PHGPB in Cisplatin-induced chronic renal failure (CRF) rats was measured. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antifibrosis effect of PHGPB in Cisplatin-induced chronic renal failure rats. Five groups consisted of five rats: negative control, Cisplatin control, and three groups of Cisplatin+PHGPB (dose of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg BW/day) treated for 56 days. The examined parameters are Beta-2-microglobulin (β2MG), hs-CRP, histopathological observations of Masson's trichrome stain, and IHC. The level of β2MG and hs-CRP in the Cisplatin+PHGPB group lowered and was highly different from Cisplatin control (p<0.05) depending on doses. In histopathology, the Cisplatin+PHGPB 400 mg/kg BW group showed less fibrosis and no significant difference with the negative control in Masson trichome staining. While in IHC histopathology, PHGPB treatment slightly ameliorated TGF-β expression and intensity of TGF-β values convincingly. In conclusion, PHGPB can relieve kidney fibrosis in cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity rats: Emphasis on anti-inflammatory activities.
