Abstract

The TikTok phenomenon, which initially served solely as a source of entertainment, like other social media, has now evolved into a creative and educational medium for music learning. This study aims to explore TikTok’s role, focusing on SMK 1 Pancasila Ambulu Jember. Students take turns singing on TikTok, videos of which have circulated widely and been appreciated by the community. This study used a qualitative and visual ethnographic approach, supported by in-depth interviews involving students and teachers. The results indicate that activities on TikTok not only serve as a fun form of musical expression but also generate several more significant impacts beyond music. Through the viral power of the For You Page (FYP), several students have received scholarships to study abroad. Furthermore, this activity can enhance the school’s branding and reputation, both regionally and nationally. Furthermore, singing on TikTok strengthens students self-confidence and collective pride. This research provides a clear picture of TikTok’s potential for the future if utilized appropriately. Not only is it an innovative medium for artistic and social learning, but TikTok will go far beyond its typical use as a social media platform. These findings also highlight the need for teachers and schools to integrate digital technologies, to expand student learning outcomes and foster the critical and imaginative thinking needed. This study contributes to the literature on social media in music education by demonstrating how TikTok can function as an effective informal learning platform in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This article examines the creation of the UNESA anthem based on the slogan “One Step Ahead,” with the aim of strengthening the identity and spirit of Surabaya State University (UNESA) through institutional music. This song is expected to be not only a symbol of pride, but also a tool to unite the academic community with messages of progress, innovation, and togetherness. The method used is an applied creativity research design with a mixed-method approach, which includes semantic analysis of lyrics, music design, recording production, and audience perception evaluation through surveys and interviews. The results of the study show that the UNESA March song is effective in strengthening the university's image and creating strong emotional bonds among students, lecturers, and educators. The meaningful lyrics and dynamic music effectively convey motivational messages that encourage listeners to persevere and innovate. The discussion reveals that the connection between the slogan and musical elements is crucial in fostering a sense of pride and solidarity. This song has become a symbol of the university's progressive spirit, encouraging all parties to contribute to mutual achievements. The recommendation from this study is to further integrate the UNESA March song into campus life and make it part of a tradition that strengthens the university's identity. This study also provides insight for other universities to create songs of pride that reflect their values and vision.

Abstract

This research examines the branding and positioning strategy of Holdtones, a brass band from Yogyakarta, in creating a unique space with Indonesia’s competitive music industry. Using W. Chan Kim and Renée Maubogne’s Bule Ocean Strategy framework and qualitative case study methodology, this research analyzes how Holdtones differentiates itself through instrumental brass band arrangements of popular and regional Indonesian songs. The findings reveal three key strategic moves: eliminating conventional elements (vocalist and lyrics), enhancing musical complexity through sophisticated arrangements and harmonization, and creating cultural value by reinterpreting regional music in brass format. Holdtones successfully leveraged social media platforms, achieving over 16 million vies on TikTok, which translated into real-worls performance opportunities at major festivals. The research identifies low direct composition and cultural preservation positioning as primary advantages, while listener education and personnel management emerge as main challenges. This study demonstrategs how independent musicians can create uncontestes market space through format innovation and digital-first strategies, offering insights for alternative approaches to sustainibility in Indonesia’s music industry while contributing to cultural preservation through creative reinterpretation of traditional music.

Abstract

This study examines students’ musical development in a church-based band learning environment using a milestone framework to map technical, musical, and collaborative progress. Ten students from GJKI Bandung Raya participated in rehearsals involving instrument-specific training, group coaching, and arrangement work. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analysed using thematic procedures and Miles and Huberman’s analytic stages. Findings indicate that students demonstrated measurable growth in tempo stability, harmonic understanding, dynamic control, cue responsiveness, and role clarity. Collaborative progress was also evident, particularly in rhythmic coordination, structural navigation, and real-time problem solving during rehearsals. Challenges such as mid-song tempo instability, dynamic imbalance, and vocal inaccuracy required adaptive instructional adjustments that supported sustained improvement. The milestone approach proved effective for identifying learning indicators in community-based band settings. The study contributes practical and theoretical insights and suggests future development of structured milestone-based band curricula.

Abstract

The study discusses the use of rebaban in “Gorompol” sekar-gending in Sundanese Kliningan performances. The study focuses on the role of the Sundanese rebab instrument in accompanying and enriching the musical composition, as well as how the rebaban playing pattern shapes the ornamentation in the “Gorompol” sekar-gending. The research method used is content analysis with data collection techniques through observation, interviews with art practitioners, and analysis of performance recordings. The results show that the Sundanese rebab plays a central role in the “Gorompol” sekar-gending, providing expressive nuances through accompanying melodies (pamurba lagu) and dynamic interactions with gamelan instruments. The Sundanese rebab playing technique in the “Gorompol” sekar-gending emphasizes embellishments (reureueus) and ornamentation variations that harmonize with the vocals and rhythm of the Sundanese gamelan. The skill of Sundanese rebab players in interpreting dynamics and ornamentation is an important factor in presenting the distinctive atmosphere of Sundanese Kliningan performances. Thus, this study deepens the understanding of the role of the Sundanese rebab in the “Gorompol” sekar-gending, and can also be a reference for the development of Sundanese rebab instrument learning methods and the preservation of Sundanese gamelan aesthetics in the context of Sundanese traditional music performances.
