Abstract

This study examines the influence of gender role conflict, loneliness, and fatherless on the subjective well-being of male university students in Indonesia, a population that faces unique psychosocial demands during the transition from adolescence to emerging adulthood. The increasing tension between traditional masculine norms—emphasizing emotional restraint, autonomy, and strength—and contemporary expectations that value emotional openness and social connectedness may place male students at heightened risk for lower well-being. Using a quantitative correlational design, this research involved 227 male students selected through purposive sampling. Four standardized instruments were employed: The Gender-Role Conflict Scale, the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Fatherhood Scale, and two well-being measures (SWLS and SPANE). Data were analysed using SEM-PLS to assess the simultaneous and relative contributions of each predictor. Results indicate that loneliness and fatherless significantly and negatively predict subjective well-being, with loneliness emerging as the strongest predictor. In contrast, gender role conflict does not significantly influence subjective well-being in this sample. The model explains 26.9% of the variance in subjective well-being, supported by robust regression diagnostics, including acceptable VIF values and the absence of heteroskedasticity. These findings highlight the central role of emotional and relational factors—particularly loneliness and the presence of a supportive father figure—in shaping well-being among male students. The nonsignificant effect of gender role conflict suggests that masculine norm pressures may not directly reduce well-being but could influence it indirectly through other psychological mechanisms. The study underscores the need for university counselling services and family-based interventions to address loneliness and strengthen father–son relationships as protective factors that can enhance the psychological well-being of male students

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of using the TED Talks application on the listening skills mastery of second-semester students in the English Education Study Program at the University of HKBP Nommensen. TED Talks, as an authentic multimedia platform, provides learners with real-life English exposure through engaging videos covering diverse topics. A quantitative experimental method was employed, involving two groups: Class B as the experimental group and Class A as the control group. The experimental group, consisting of 25 students, was taught using TED Talks, while the control group of 31 students received instruction through conventional methods. Both groups took a pre-test and a post-test to measure the development of their listening skills. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s average score, increasing from 59.6 to 70,24, compared to the control group’s rise from 57.16 to 64.38. The t-test analysis produced a t-observed value of 2.571, which exceeded the t-table value of 2.005 at a 0.05 significance level, indicating a statistically significant difference. These results support the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and demonstrate that the use of TED Talks positively impacts students’ listening skills. Therefore, TED Talks can be considered an effective and innovative tool for enhancing listening instruction in EFL university settings

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model on students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in Statistics material for grade VIII. The method used is Quasi Experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class consisting of 31 students who were treated with the PBL model and the control class consisting of 28 students who were taught with the conventional model. The research instrument was a mathematical problem-solving test in the form of descriptions that had been tested for validity and reliability. The results showed that the N-Gain value in the experimental class was 0.73 (high category), while in the control class it was 0.32 (medium category). The average posttest score of students in the experimental class was also higher than that of the control class. Hypothesis testing using the t-test produced a t-value of 13.858 > t-table = 2.8 with sig. = 0.000 < 0.05, which means there is a significant influence of the PBL model on students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. Thus, the application of PBL can be used as an effective alternative in mathematics learning to improve students' problem-solving abilities.
