Abstract

This research focused on the students’ ability in writing procedure text at grade XI MAS NU Sibuhuan. Based on first observation, the students are difficult to create text because they have lack of vocabulary and confidence in expressing idea into written form. The researcher applied mixed method by giving essay test and interview to evaluate the students’ writing in procedure text and identifying students’ difficulties. Students’ of XI MIA 2 that consisted of 33 were as sample. The indicators of test divided into content, organization, syntax, vocabulary and mechanics. The result of this research has found that students’ ability in writing procedure text lied on mean 57.56 score. It means that students’ writing procedure text ability categorize into poor category. Moreover, the students’ difficulties are vocabulary mastery and syntax.

Abstract

This research is discussing about students’ ability in mastering subordinating conjunction. The aim of this research was to find out the student’ ability in mastering subordinating conjunction at the fourth semester students of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. This research was descriptive quantitative method that was conducted at the fourth semester IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The population of this research was fourth semester students of English department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. This research used 21 students as a sample. They were gotten by random sampling technique. The mean score of the students’ ability in mastering subordinating conjunction was 81.93. The result of this research showed the students ability in mastering subordinating conjunction was very good category.

Abstract

Learning autonomy means learners have to take responsibility in handing their own learning with the help and supervision guided by teachers. Then, selecting types of assessment techniques can be a way to create students’ learning autonomy during the instructional process. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine some techniques of English learning assessment that can foster students’ learning autonomy in online learning environment. Qualitative research was applied as research design done at English Education Department of the Institute for Islamic Studies of Padangsidimpuan. Ten lecturers of English Education Department were chosen purposively as respondents and interview was used as data collection technique. Then, the data were analyzed through qualitative data analysis in which the data were described and elaborated in detail ways. Related to findings, this study found some techniques of English learning assessment that regarded effective to improve students’ independence in online learning i.e. portfolio assessment, discussion and problem solving, essays and summary writing, online presentation, multimedia presentation, mini research, and recording performance task. Finally, this study concluded that there are many assessment techniques to foster students’ online learning autonomy and the promotion of learning autonomy becomes an important aspect to be included in online learning environment.

Abstract

This study had purposes to find out students’ anxiety types, the reason why they got the anxiety and their suggestions for the lecturer who teaches English grammar to release their students’ anxiety. To reach the purposes, a qualitative method was used. Twenty anxious of first year students at university were chosen to be participants of the research. Those students were interviewed by fifteen questions. Most students said that lack knowledge of English Grammar made them anxious in learning the subject. The students suggest the lecturer identified students’ anxiety before the lesson started; creating fun, communicative and less formal class; and overcoming students’ problems in learning Grammar. It is concluded that every students faced anxiety in learning grammar but the lecturer could minimize it.

Abstract

This study presents the story of experience of EFL teacher in teaching and learning process during pandemic by implementing blended learning. The research design was qualitatively through narrative inquiry. Meanwhile, the reach instrument used by the teacher was narrative box and interview guide. Next, the researcher analyzed the story by re-telling narratively, the researcher then segmented the narrative data into themes. The finding of this study reveals that the teacher tried to apply suitable online platform to teach in blended learning, then it was decided that the teacher used Google classroom and WhatsApp. This application was chosen because of the school policy and it was easier for the students to be implemented. Moreover, there were some problems in its implementation; those were internet connection, and students’ awareness.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the types of code mixing that used in episode 4–blind audition “The Voice Indonesia 2019”. The researcher used four videos as data from youtube channel. This research used library research.  The data analysis used the following steps: organize and prepare the data for analysis, watching the videos in many times, coding the data use coding process to generate a description and give the description of the data findings. The result was found there are 87 data that contains code mixing. From 87 data of code mixing that found by the researcher, there are 72 data that include to intra sentencial code mixing, 8 data include to intra lexical code mixing, and 7 data include to involving a change pronounciation. The dominant code mixing was intra sentencial code mixing.

Abstract

This study aims to produce speaking materials based on the students’ need and interests of Contextual Teaching Learning Approach. This research uses Research and Development design. In the context of the study, the researcher used questionnaire and interview guide. The draft of developed material focused on speaking and it was developed based on curriculum 2013. There are 11 units in this developed material.The researcher found that the materials was appropriate to the students. The students were interested to the topics so they were anthusiastic to speak in the class. It was because they thought that they really knew about the topic and it made them easy to prticipate the lesson. The students also interested with some pictures that display their classmate . It encourage them to read the materials anthusiasly.

Abstract

Pandemic Covid-19 has successfully forced the world shutdown several activities including educational activities. The educational system in Indonesia has been in change since the covid-19 pandemic spread across the country. Face-to-face learning is quickly being replaced by virtual learning. In this study researcher would like to know the students’ perspective on Online Learning during Covid–19 Pandemic. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this research were the students at grade XI in 2019/2020 academic year at SMAN 2 Plus Sipirok. The research instruments were questionnaire that was described response to know their perspective in using online learning. The result identified student got problems and difficulties in conducting online learning because it was not effective. The students prefer face to face learning than by using WhatApp and Zoom application.

Abstract

This study investigated types of games applied by the teachers in teaching speaking, described the problems faced by the teachers in implementing the games, and found out the solutions done to overcome the problems. Then, this study was in a form of qualitative research applying descriptive method in analyzing the data. Observation and interview were conducted to collect the data related to the implementation of the games, and descriptive data analysis was used in analyzing them. This study found that there were some games used by the teachers in teaching speaking e.g find someone who, hot seat, whispering, interview, survey, finger up and down, memory chain, and fact or fake game. The problems also happened during speaking practice like the use of mother tongue due to lack of vocabulary, cheating, and passive students. Finally, the teachers did solutions to solve the problems like giving clear instructions, and setting the rules before playing the games.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out if there was a positive correlation between students' vocabulary skills and descriptive reading. These was a correlational research methodology by using test of students’ vocabulary knowledge and assess descriptive reading skills. The study used SPSS to assess the relation between students' vocabulary knowledge and descriptive reading skills. The significant value was 0.000 ≤ 0.005, indicating that there was a relation among vocabulary competency and descriptive reading ability among the students. According to the data, 0.700 is the value of the correlation coefficient. So, based on ranges of correlation from 0.60 up to 0.799, it is clear that there was a strong degree of relevance relationship which means that the correlation was indicating a high level of correlation.
