Abstract

The aim of this research is to know deeply about the important thing of communication. Their impact has been broadly studied within interactions between humans as well as in the field of human-computer interaction. The emergence of many new information and communication technologies, face-to-face interaction is still widespread and popular. A greater emphasis is put on face-to-face communication which provides greater interaction compared to mass communication. This research included into qualitative research. The results show that communication between students and parents is less than 1 hour and vary often misunderstandings between them. The rejection of the positive aspect of the communication by the students, such as having relaxed communication and having great interest for communication from the parents also leads to the same conclusion. Having some fear in communication with the parents is equally perceived by the different categories of students.

Abstract

AbstractTulisan ini membahas tentang model penilaian yang komunikatif. Komunikatif maksudnya dilakukan untuk menguji kemampuan komunikatif siswa; yakni kemampuan siswa secara integritas. Kemampuan siswa yang diuji terkait dengan dengan kemampuan menulis, membaca, mendengarkan, dan berbicara yang dikaitkan dengna kehidupan keseharian. Selain itu dalam tulisan ini juga diberikan contoh penilaian komunikatif. Diharapkan tulisan ini dapat memberikan ide dan masukan bagi para pengajar, khususnya bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This research focused on simile analysis and meaning on Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets novel. Simile is a figurative language that makes a comparison, showing similarities between two different things. Qualitative research is used in conducting this research. The result of the research has found 55 sentences of Simile on Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets from chapter one up to chapter nine. The author used Simile to describe emotion of characters, to explain circumstances and to raise the interesting impression in the novel.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul “Analysis of Sentence Elements by Using Tree Diagram of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan” bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ditemukan unsur-unsur kalimat menggunakan tree diagram dan mencari tipe unsur-unsur kalimat yang paling sering digunakan dalam menggunakan tree diagram. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif-deskriptif, dengan informan penelitiannya adalah mahasiswa bahasa Inggris yang terdiri dari 22 orang. Adapun instrumen pengumpulan datanya adalah wawancara tidak terstruktur dan observasi. Peneliti menganalisis data dengan mengedit data, menggambarkan, dan membuat kesimpulan. Unsur-unsur kalimat yang dianalisis adalah subjek, kata kerja, objek, dan pelengkap. Setelah data diperoleh, dilakukan pengklasifikasian data berdasarkan unsur-unsur kalimat menggunakan tree diagram kemudian dianalisis dengan menggunakan rumus. Dari analisis tersebut dihasilkan bahwa dalam unsur-unsur kalimat yang ditemukan menggunakan tree diagram, unsur-unsur kalimat yang paling dominan digunakan adalah ’Verb’; dalam tipe kalimat sederhana.

Abstract

This study aims to explain (1) the teacher’s challenges using the application in online teaching classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic, and (2) the strategies used by teachers in teaching using the application. The participants of the research were the English teachers at SMA/SMK/MA in Yogyakarta, Gunungkidul, Magelang, and Kebumen. A qualitative method was employed in this research and using interviews via WhatsApp as a data collection technique. The findings showed that teachers had the challenges such as (1) operating the application during online learning, (2) developing the material, assessment, and evaluation in teaching, (3) developing the teaching method, (4) combining the material and application, and (5) motivating the students and parents. The strategies used by the teacher when using the application in teaching such as (1) watching the video tutorial, (2) choosing a  suitable application for teaching, (3) arranging the new learning schedule, (4) developing the creativity in designing the material, and (5) giving the simple material and task for the students.

Abstract

The main focus of the research was to know the students’ descriptive writing in experiential function realizations and to find out the dominant process in that problems. Qualitative research was used in conducting this research. The participants of this research were 26 students at TBI-1 seventh semester of English Department IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The instrument to collect the data was the documents of students’ answer sheet in writing descriptive text. The data were analyzed by using Cresswell’s theory these are organizing and preparing data, reading data, coding data, generating description of data, representing data, and interpreting data. The result showed that the students’ writing descriptive text in experiential function realized on six process. The processes were material, verbal, mental, relational, behavioral and existential process. From the six processes, relational process realization was the dominant on students’ sentences. There are 47.67%process was categorized into relational process.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher concerned on translation study, that is the procedures employed by translator in translating speech video entitled how every child can thrive by five by Molly wright from English into Indonesian. The target from present study was catching up the translation procedures employed by translator. This study used to qualitative method to searched the objective of this study. Then, translation procedures types by Newmark were used by the researcher. The researcher involved herself in gathered data through several steps; watched the speech video, determining, allocating and identifying them entrenched the theory of translation procedures. The finding showed that there were fifth types; literal translation (37%), reduction (4%), deletion (2%), and transposition (41%). The most dominant translation procedure employed in the speech video was transposition.

Abstract

 This research is discussing about the students’ reading comprehension of the second year MTs.Muhammadiyah 22 Padangsidimpuan. This research employed descriptive quantitative  research. Based on the result of the research, researcher got the description of the data was found that mean score was 56.76. It means that the students’ reading comprehension of the second year MTs.Muhammadiyah 22 Padangsidimpuan was categorized into enough ability. Then, from the result of the hypothesis testing, the researcher found that Zcount =-3.57Ztable 0.3264. It means the hypothesis was rejected. Thus, the result of mean scores the students’ ability in enough ability and actually it should be accepted hypothesis, but based on the result of that score it is rejected. So, maybe there is a mistake in instrument or in calculation.

Abstract

The present study examined the English literature students’ perception on the use of local sources, which were used as alternative reading sources. Despite being insufficient in terms of grammatical accuracy, naturalness of the text, and the poor layout, these local sources can also improve the students’ understanding toward the reading materials. Besides, the simplified vocabulary and grammar found in the text can also help the less able learners to understand the learning sources easier. The main advantages for the students identified in the study were actually the affordability and the accessibility of the learning materials. However, the students also suggest that these local sources should be continously improve so that these materials can be more interesting for the students to read. Abstract

The article is aimed to inform that self-assessment optimization through WhatsApp features can Increase the students’ listening comprehension. The action research is used to gain the data. It consists of 4 steps, like planning, acting, developing, and reflecting stage. It conducted for two cycles. The informants of this research come from fourth semester of English Education Program at STAIN Mandailing Natal. The instruments of collecting the data are an interview guide, online questionnaire, Listening script, and field note. Qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed in this analysis. Qualitative data would be collected by observation, interviewing, and surveying. The listening examination will collect quantitative evidence. It will be evaluated using a listening comprehension score calculation. The result of the research showed the increasing on students’ listening comprehension through self-assessment optimization, it can be seen from the students’ scoring in each meeting.
