Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of students’ perceptions of test validity and fairness on their mental well-being in the context of learning outcomes. The background of this study is based on the increasing academic pressure originating from evaluation systems and the importance of students’ psychological well-being as a foundation for effective learning. The approach used is quantitative with a multiple linear regression method. The population of this study is all tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Silimakuta, with a sample of 32 respondents selected through a non-probability sampling technique. The research instrument is a five-level Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of 18 statement items. The analysis results show that partially, perceived test validity has a significant effect on students’ mental well-being (t stat=5.246 > t table=2.04; sig.=0.000). On the contrary, perceived test fairness does not show a significant effect (t stat=-1.068 < t table=2.04; sig.=0.294). However, simultaneously both variables have a significant effect on students’ mental well-being (F stat=22.435 > F table=3.33; sig.=0.000) with a contribution of 60.7% (R square=0.607). These findings indicate that an evaluation system that is valid and perceived as fair together is able to create a learning environment that supports students’ psychological well-being. Thus, this study emphasizes the importance of designing learning outcomes that not only fulfills psychometric aspects but also pays attention to the emotional and psychological impacts of learners.

Abstract

Reading plays an essential role in higher education, particularly in EFL contexts where students are required to comprehend complex academic texts. However, many students experience difficulties due to limited vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and insufficient background knowledge, which often hinder their reading comprehension. To address this issue, the Reading Matrix has been introduced to support students in organizing and processing information. Therefore, this study aims to explore students’ perceptions of using the Reading Matrix in supporting academic reading and to identify the challenges they encounter when completing it. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design, involving university students in an Extensive Reading class. Data were collected through close-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that the Reading Matrix helps students organize information, compare ideas, identify relationships, focus on key information, connect ideas, and support overall understanding. However, challenges related to vocabulary, sentence complexity, and background knowledge remain. These results suggest that the Reading Matrix is useful, but its effectiveness depends on additional instructional support.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology have brought about significant changes in the world of education, one of which is the implementation of Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL), which is believed to enhance student engagement. However, research on on DGBL still shows a diversity of focus, both in terms of publication trends, fields of study, and the types of games used. This study aims to map the development of DGBL research in relation to student engagement using a bibliometric approach. The research method consists of a bibliometric analysis using data drawn from the Scopus database for the period 2017-2026. Articles  were systematically selected until 50 publications meeting the inclusion criteria were obtained. Data analysis utilized the Biblioshiny software to identify publication trends, the distribution of scientific fields, and the dominant types of games. The results indicate an increase in DGBL publications with an annual growth rate of 16.65%. The study was dominated by the sciences (74%), particularly health, engineering, and biology, while the social sciences accounted for only 26%, with a focus on business, education, and literacy. In terms of game types, serious games ranked first (54%), followed by quiz games, simulation games, role-playing games, and augmented reality. These findings underscore the significant potential of DGBL in enhancing learning engagement; however, its application remains concentrated in the sciences, necessitating broader development in the social sciences.

Abstract

EFL students often exhibit passivity, hesitation, and low confidence when required to speak English, particularly during descriptive text instruction. Therefore, this study aims to identify the types of speaking difficulties and analyze the underlying factors influencing these challenges among tenth-grade students at a private Islamic senior high school in Surakarta. This research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis for data collection. The results indicate that students face difficulties in four main aspects: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and speaking fluency, with limited vocabulary being the most dominant barrier. Additionally, these difficulties are significantly influenced by a combination of psychological, linguistic, and environmental factors, where psychological issues namely anxiety and low self-confidence act as the primary triggers for students' lack of fluency. In conclusion, speaking difficulties in learning descriptive texts stem from a complex interaction of psychological, linguistic, and environmental variables. The implication of this study is that educators must implement comprehensive instructional strategies that not only focus on linguistic competence but also actively build a supportive learning environment to reduce student anxiety.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the implementation of innovative history learning can become an effective solution in improving students’ critical thinking skills, which tend to be at a low cognitive level. The population in this study was all Class X1, consisting of 6 classes. Each class had 35 students. The sample was determined using the Slovin formula with an error rate (e) of 5% (0.05). Thus, the sample taken was 138 students of Class XI. To analyze the data in this study, qualitative methods were used to describe students' and teachers' activities during the learning process through observation and interviews. Quantitative data were collected using a Pre-Experimental design, specifically a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The findings of this study showed that the implemented history learning method was highly effective, as it transformed the category “Fair” (62.5) into “Very Good” (84.2) across 138 respondents. Overall, the discussion section reflected the success of the learning program. At the pretest stage, the majority of students (108 students) were below the “Good” category. However, at the posttest stage, this condition completely reversed, with the majority of students achieving the “Good” to “Very Good” standards. The implemented learning method successfully improved the quality of learning outcomes at scale, transforming the class profile from predominantly “Fair/Poor” to predominantly “Very Good.” The N-Gain score was 0.60.

Abstract

Vocational High Schools play a strategic role in preparing competent human resources aligned with industry demands. The quality of vocational education is closely related to teacher performance, which is influenced by leadership practices implemented by school principals. Transformational leadership is considered a relevant leadership approach in educational management because it emphasizes inspirational vision, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, and motivational influence. However, previous empirical findings regarding the relationship between transformational leadership and teacher performance show varying results, creating the need for a comprehensive synthesis. This study aims to analyze the effect of transformational leadership on teacher performance in Vocational High Schools through a literature review approach. Relevant scientific articles published between 2017 and 2026 were collected from Google Scholar and ScienceDirect using keywords related to transformational leadership and teacher performance in Vocational High Schools. After screening and applying inclusion criteria, the selected articles were analyzed descriptively and comparatively. The findings indicate that most studies report a positive and significant relationship between transformational leadership and teacher performance, either directly or indirectly through mediating variables such as work motivation, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction. Overall, transformational leadership contributes to improving teacher effectiveness and the quality of vocational education.
