Abstract

The prevalence of obesity continues to increase in various countries. Obesity is a multifactorial condition influenced by lifestyle, diet, and genetic factors. This study aims to identify risk factors associated with obesity using secondary data analysis conducted using the Obesity Dataset, which consists of 485 individuals aged 14–61 years from Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. The research data were tested using the chi-square test to assess the relationship between obesity risk factors, followed by a multivariate test using logistic regression. The results indicated that a significant relationship with obesity was only found in the factors of a family history of obesity, smoking status, and age group. Individuals with a family history of overweight were almost five times more likely to be obese (OR = 4.98; 95% CI: 2.25–11.04; p < 0.001). Smokers had nearly three times higher odds of obesity compared to non-smokers (OR = 2.91; 95% CI: 1.17–7.24; p = 0.022). In addition, older age was associated with an increased likelihood of obesity (OR = 4.84; 95% CI: 1.51–15.49; p = 0.008). These findings conclude that genetic factors and smoking habits have a stronger association with obesity than dietary factors and physical activity. This study suggests that public health interventions should encompass not only diet and physical activity but also incorporate smoking prevention and cessation programs as essential components of obesity control strategies. Futhermore, population with family history of overweight and older age need to optimize prevention and nutritional intervention efforts to prevent and overcome obesity.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effect of a syrup combining Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (roselle) and Ocimum sanctum L. (basil) extracts in male rats exposed to oxidative stress induced by used cooking oil (UCO). A randomized controlled design was applied using six treatment groups, including single and combined extract syrups. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, an indicator of lipid peroxidation, were measured before induction, after UCO exposure, and following treatment. Results showed a significant rise in MDA levels after UCO induction, confirming oxidative stress. Administration of roselle–basil syrup markedly reduced plasma MDA compared with the induced control (p < 0.05). The optimal formulation achieved up to a 96–97% reduction in MDA levels, indicating strong antioxidant efficacy. This effect is attributed to the synergistic action of anthocyanins from roselle and eugenol and rosmarinic acid from basil, which act as radical scavengers and metal chelators. These findings validate the synergistic potential of the roselle–basil combination in mitigating oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation. The study highlights its promise as a natural, safe, and locally sourced antioxidant formulation, offering a foundation for developing functional beverages or nutraceutical products aimed at preventing oxidative damage from dietary lipid oxidation.

Abstract

Postpartum anxiety and depression are common mental health problems in postpartum mothers, especially when there is a challenge of low family support (neglectful family). Postpartum mothers who are neglected by their families are 20% more at risk of experiencing anxiety and 13% more at risk of experiencing postpartum depression compared to mothers who receive family care. Suboptimal family support can exacerbate psychological symptoms and hinder mother-infant bonding. The purpose of this study was to develop the TelenursaMoms application, a digital platform that is easily accessible at any time to assess family function and maternal psychological health, as well as provide initial management for postpartum mothers with neglectful challenges. The study used a quasi-experimental pre-post test with a control group design with 80 postpartum mothers who met the inclusion criteria. The instruments used were the Family Functioning and Cohesion Scale (FFCS) and the Postpartum Mother Assessment Tool (ASIPP). Data analysis used ANCOVA. After adjusting for pre-test scores, ANCOVA showed that the TelenursaMoms intervention group had significantly higher post-test scores than the control group in all outcomes: emotional regulation (F(1,79) = 16.0, p < 0.001, partial η² = 0.17), maternal self-confidence (F(1,79) = 19.5, p < 0.001, partial η² = 0.20), marital satisfaction (F(1,79) = 25.0, p < 0.001, partial η² = 0.24), and family cohesion (F(1,79) = 42.3, p < 0.001, partial η² = 0.35). TelenursaMoms proved significantly effective, especially in strengthening family cohesion and marital satisfaction, two relational aspects that are frequently neglected in existing digital interventions for maternal well-being.

Abstract

This narrative review examines the “silent suffering” of women in Pakistan who experience unmanaged labour pain despite major advances in obstetric analgesia globally. Drawing on approximately 25 empirical, policy and survey sources, the review synthesises evidence on the availability, distribution and use of painless labour services—including epidural analgesia and nitrous oxide (Entonox)—through the lens of the WHO Health Systems Framework and, where relevant, the “three delays” model. Findings reveal a highly inequitable landscape in which painless labour is concentrated in a few urban tertiary and private facilities, constrained by infrastructural gaps, high out-of-pocket costs, persistent shortages and maldistribution of anaesthesiologists, and underutilisation of midwives. Demand-side barriers include low awareness, widespread misconceptions about risks, and socio-cultural and religious narratives that normalise labour pain and limit women’s autonomy. These structural and cultural constraints collectively undermine Pakistan’s commitments to respectful maternity care and universal health coverage. The review concludes with policy and practice recommendations, including investments in public-sector capacity, integration of labour analgesia into benefit packages, task-shifting selected modalities to midwives, and community engagement to address myths and affirm women’s right to pain relief.

Abstract

Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder that, while incurable, is entirely preventable through early detection. In Indonesia, an estimated 6–10% of the population carries the thalassemia gene but screening is not a nationwide mandatory. Existing initiatives remain fragmented across regions and target only specific groups, such as prospective brides and grooms in Jakarta or pilot programs in Bekasi Regency. Lack of early screening leads to the birth of thousands of children with thalassemia major, requiring lifelong transfusions and iron chelation therapy that costs the government IDR 800 billion per year. To achieve long-term sustainability, Indonesia must shift from curative to preventive strategies by integrating genetic screening into the national health insurance and reproductive health systems. Policy Ask: Develop a joint regulation between the Minister of Health and the Minister of Religious Affairs, or Minister of Health Regulation (Permenkes), mandating premarital and school-based thalassemia screening as part of national health and marriage registration programs.

Abstract

Research on ergonomic risk factors for neck pain among Islamic boarding school students remains scarce, despite their prolonged study and Qur’an memorization activities in static sitting postures. Non-neutral body posture during learning may increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), particularly neck pain, which can impair concentration and quality of life. This analytic cross-sectional study aimed to assess students’ body posture during study and memorization activities and to examine its association with neck pain. A total of 72 boarding and non-boarding students participated. Data were collected using questionnaires and the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), and analyzed with chi-square tests and logistic regression to obtain prevalence ratios (PR) and p-values. Neck pain was reported by 63.9% of respondents; 72.2% exhibited poor sitting posture, and 80.6% reported moderate-to-severe stress. Bivariate analysis showed a significant association between stress level and neck pain (p = 0.033; PR = 2.19; 95% CI: 1.25–3.83). In multivariate logistic regression, no variable reached conventional statistical significance; however, students with moderate-to-severe stress had a 3.81-fold higher risk of neck pain (p = 0.057). These findings underscore the need for integrated ergonomic and psychosocial interventions in Islamic boarding school settings to reduce neck pain risk among students.
